The Salem rotation is going to need a bit of shuffling soon. With Workman coming up and Barnes knocking on the door, Pressly, Rivera, and Celestino are going to be left competing for one slot and use as piggy backs. Couch and Britton should hold on to their rotation slots unless the organization decides to cut bait on Britton as a starter early that most of us anticipate them doing so.

Nice. Anyone heard if he's added velocity since prior to TJS? I realize that it's not really adding, but more regaining what had been gradually lost. With Tazawa and Wilson in AAA, I'm not really in panic mode regarding the BP.

Is there any time frame on when Rich Hill and to a lesser extent Andrew Miller could be ready for Boston.... an upgrade from Thomas to Hill could really be pretty sweet....

I still worry about bringing Miller into a tight spot even just to face a lefty... he walks too many guys to really count on

Do either of them have opt-outs in their contract? I would assume they would expect to be called up before too long.

Ummm, for 2012 both Hill and Miller are on the Sox 40-man roster already, so no -- neither have opt-outs. Those are for minor-league contracts only.

However, neither one has minor league options remaining, and both have already been outrighted to the minors.

Therefore, if either Hill or Miller is not activated to the Sox 25-man roster within the remaining duration of his respective rehab assignment, he would have to be designated for assignment -- the process by which he is lost to another team's waiver claim (likely) or becomes a free agent again (less so).

Game Story

Second baseman Tony Thomas, playing in just his second game of the season smashed a pair of home runs to power the PawSox to a 4-3 win in Syracuse on Monday night. Thomas blasted a solo shot in the third and a two run homer in the fifth. Both were surrendered by starter and loser Tanner Roark (0-3). In the sixth inning, Ryan Lavarnway hit his first round tripper of the season. It came in his thirty ninth at bat. In 2011, Lavarnway hit 34 home runs in stops in Portland, Pawtucket and Boston.

Ross Ohlendorf, the reigning pitcher of the week in the International League, improved to 2-0. Ohlendorf cruised through 6 shutout innings, before running into some seventh inning trouble. He allowed 3 runs (2 earned). Garrett Mock struck out the side to put out the fire in the seventh. In the eighth, lefty Andrew Miller bounced back from a subpar outing on Sunday. The Boston reliever struck out the side on 14 pitches (11 strikes). It is scheduled to be his final outing of his rehab assignment (hamstring). Junichi Tazawa pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.

The New Britain Rock Cats beat the Sea Dogs 10-5 in 11 innings Monday night at Hadlock Field.
After Chris Colabello's three-run homer off reliever Aaron Kurcz in the ninth made it 5-5, Colabello hit an RBI double in the 11th to give the Rock Cats their first lead.
The runs kept coming, as neither Kurcz nor Caleb Clay could bar the door.
Daniel Turpen pitched two perfect extra innings for the win that dropped Portland to 3-9.
"I thought for nine innings it was the best our guys have played," Portland Manager Kevin Boles said. "It's unfortunate but our guys will bounce back."
New Britain's rally denied Martin his first Double-A win.
Martin retired the first 11 batters. He allowed three hits over six innings, with two runs and no walks, striking out three.
"He kept the ball down and as the numbers showed, he pitched a good enough game to win it," said Colabello, who was 0 for 2 against Martin.

DRAWING EVEN: The Salem Red Sox got outstanding mound work for the second straight night, as three pitchers combined for a four-hit shutout to help the club move back to .500 with a 5-0 victory over the Lynchburg Hillcats on Monday at Salem Memorial Ballpark.
TAKE A SEAT: Right-hander Keith Couch, who entered the day third in the Carolina League in strikeouts (12), whiffed seven more over six scoreless innings in relief of rehabbing lefty Rich Hill. Greenville’s strikeout leader last season, he shut down the Carolina League’s top-hitting team with a sinking fastball and a disappearing slider. He fanned the side in the seventh – his final inning of work.
HELP FROM JOSE: A 13th-round pick out of Adelphi University in New York, Couch credited his strong start to the season to his offseason workout program with Jose Reyes of the Marlins. The two share an agent and trained for an hour and a half three days a week over the winter in New York with several other minor leaguers.
“He’s a cool guy,” Couch said of Reyes. “He actually took us out to the city to a couple of hockey games. He’s very personable.”
WALLY PIPP? With regular centerfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. taking the night off, Brandon Jacobs manned that position instead of his usual left field spot. He looked plenty comfortable. Jacobs robbed David Rohm of a hit with a sliding catch in the second inning and later threw out Edward Salcedo, who had rounded the second base bag too far. Jacobs also went 2-for-4 with an RBI double.

Greenville managed only four hits Monday night as the Drive lost to Lexington 6-2.In addition to a lack of hitting, Greenville starting pitcher Luis Diaz had a rough outing as he was stung for five earned runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out two in 31/3 innings. Diaz also had three wild pitches as Greenville dropped its sixth straight game.
