Meanwhile, Jeter continues to just kill lefties.

I mean, I'm not going to defend A-Rod so much, I got kicked off nyyfans a few times for slamming him back in the day. But if they don't sign him to this current ridiculous deal, they don't win in 2009. That buys a few years of goodwill in my book.

Fair enough. I think you'll be going nuts by 2015.

Holy shit.

Did Jeter join Kobe Bryant in Germany this offseason?

He had really good numbers after coming back from the injury mid-season last year, but he's swinging the bat great right now.

Jeter still only had a .610 OPS against RHP coming into tonight. Up a bit with a double in two trips, but almost all of his damage has been against LHP, who he never stopped hitting well.

It's 2012. He's signed for 5 more years. 2009 is long gone - and ARod is not the same player. Not even close. But he's being paid like he is.

Edit: If you didn't like Jeter's 3$/51 + option, I can't understand how you're not livid with remaining ARod's 7/$200-210+ deal left.

I'm with JA here. I can't hate A-Rod after 09. They might not even get out of the ALDS without him, let alone win it all. I also find it funny that the guy was routinely shat on for being a choker, then responded by having an insanely clutch championship run, and no one really talks or talked about the redemption angle and gave him much credit for it, at least compared to the enormous amount of attention his choking ways got. I realize it's because everyone hates him, but still. I'll cut him a break.

I don't really feel this way - but this phrase comes to mind

"the sun even shines on a dog's ass somedays"

I get that 2009 may not happen without him - but he can be pitched to inside now (3 ground balls to left side today as everyone pounding him in), is owed $30M/y thru 2017, and is now a good but not great player.

ARod wRC+ 2007-2011: 178, 155, 143, 123, 125
ARod games 2007-12: 158, 138, 124, 137, 99

Edit: I can't hate sweaty Freddy too much - 1 year, $4.5M deal, will pitch in the pen, not his fault he signed before Kuroda/Pineda/Pettitte. Agree with JA that I'm losing patience with Hughes as well, but again - his presence does not really impede the club's ability to win, because he can be sent down or to the pen.

See, that's what I mean. He was impossibly clutch in that postseason. Most guys perform like that and they're set for life among fans of their team. I understand if he had just one or even two big hits, but he had huge clutch hits in every series. He couldn't have been bigger. So to me, I can't just say whatever, he got lucky, fuck him. I'll get frustrated with him, sure, and I realize he's not the same guy, but I can't hate him like I used to (and I pretty much did, just like virtually every other Yankee fan).

I don't hate him - but his deal will be the single biggest impediment to the team winning in the coming 5-7 years. That is frustrating to me. In 2014, I won't care too much about what happened in 2009. Just like I didn't care about what happened in 2000/2001 when the Jeter deal was going down.

Yeah, exactly, and he's had lots of injury issues in the interim too. One reason I'm not tougher on him currently is that he's done a very nice job fielding his position since coming back from his last injury late last season, so at least he's not clogging the DH spot (yet).

Injury issues? Why does he get a pass on this? Do we know this is not related to PED use? Staying healthy is an important part of contributing. It is no lock that he will be able to maintain his health going forward - in which case, his contract looks even worse.

Another thing is that he works pretty hard -- the guy puts in the effort on the off-season. Harder to hate someone that busts his ass when rehabbing from injury, doing his off-season work, etc.

I just think you're anticipating for no reason, his contract hasn't stopped them from signing anyone as of yet (they weren't going to get Carlos Pena for DH anyway, he wanted to play 1B). If it does, then I can understand the irritation more.

(I can't believe you're making me defend King Oompa-Loompa.)

Hate is such a strong word - I think the question was really meant to be "now that Jeter's back to being Jeter again, who will draw the ire of JA?"

I'll let it go since I've already beaten a dead horse - just surprised at JA's response since I had a totally different take

I think not getting Pena was simply a case of him wanting to go back to Tampa Bay. Watching him play, he just looks ecstatic to be back there, and he and Longoria look like best friends. Unless the Yankees were gonna do something crazy like offer him 3/$30M, he was going back to TB.

This.

Maybe Yanks will have a big problem with payroll flexibility, but if they can get decent cost controlled pitching, which is looking possible, I think they'll be fine resigning who they need to.

Because Scioscia would counter by hitting with Callaspo or Bourjos. You're not going to get the lefty on lefty matchup.

Trumbo is either going to K or possibly walk if Robertson comes in wild. The chances of him putting a ball in play are miniscule.
