Is he going to need surgery even if he returns without it?

I think Boras will be analyzing AG's 2010 production and 2011 contract extension very closely, as he builds his binder on Ellsbury.

If it's possible to play, Ellsbury has to come back this year -- both to be in line for an arb award in 2013 over $10MM, and to jettison the "brittle" label going into FA. Playing every other season isn't a good way to guarantee yourself $150+ MM.

Not necessarily - Jeter never had it. Dwayne Wade rehabbed, played the rest of the season and had the surgery as soon as the season ended. I could see that happening with Ells - if he's fortunate enough to be able to come back this year, that is.

Sounds like they'll be doing more testing tomorrow to try to get a look at his labrum:

The team has been waiting for the swelling in his shoulder to go down since tests are difficult to conduct under those circumstances. It's been nearly two full days since Ellsbury was hurt in the fourth inning Friday afternoon against the Rays, on a takeout slide he made at second base.
"The 48-hour period is almost done where the ice will no longer have any effect, I guess, or have any benefit," manager Bobby Valentine said Sunday morning. "That's the period we're waiting to get over, where the swelling is controlled as much as possible. Then I believe there'll be another evaluation."

Yes, this is typical of injuries like that. They need to wait untill all the swelling goes away so they can look at the ligaments and tendons around the injury.

Meh. Don't wait for any great revelations out of this exam tomorrow. Short of his shoulder completely dislocating in the exam room (did that to a patient once, do NOT recommend it), the plan won't change much. 6 to 8 weeks of rehab and see how it feels...

Any updates anyone has come across after Ellsbury's exam today?

No surgery expected

Or you could say, we don't know yet: "At this point I believe he can recover from this without surgery, but we're still gathering information," Cherington said.

In other words, it's a possibility, but we'll re-assess things in six weeks.

FWIW, I can't imagine an injury like this contributing to a reputation of being "brittle", unless Ellsbury takes an inordinately long time to come back. Don't think anyone labeled Jeter as brittle for having sustained a similar injury under similar circumstances.

That was pretty much my point -- if Ellsbury comes back, Boras gets to add Gonzalez (and Jeter) to his play-through-injury comps list. If he needs surgery and misses the season, he's a lot more work to do to convince someone that $150 MM for an outfielder that breaks down every year is still a worthwhile investment.

I'll tell you, the lineup looks and soooo much longer with healthy (key word, of course) Ellsbury in there.
(something like these, anyway)
Vs. Righties:
Ellsbury
Pedey
Ortiz
Gonzo
WMB
Sweeney
Ross
Salty
Aviles

Vs. Lefties
Ellsbury
Pedey
Ortiz
WMB
Gonzo
Ross
McDonald
Shoppach
Aviles

When you take CF Black Hole player-du-jour out and replace him with a great player, man oh Pete does it soothe the soul. Hopefully Jacoby is actually close and his shoulder stays together once he starts putting serious pressure on it. Maybe the starting itching will calm down and be decent when they believe they might even get some runs in games vs. good pitchers.

As part of the DMac to the DL/Mauro Gomez called up moves, Ellsbury to the 60-day DL to clear a 40-man slot for Gomez.

He went on the DL 4/14 after his last game on 4/13. The earliest calendar date he could be activated is June 13 when they play the Marlins in Miami.
