Subban, Phaneuf, AND Bouwmeester? Are they going for the most over-rated defense in history?

Canada is still streets ahead of Team USA. Half of the USA squad looks to be a glorified college team.

Highlights can be found here. Some of those plays are just brutal to watch. Yeesh.

On another note, Ryan Murray will play for Team Canada. Maybe a good tournament could boost him into the #1 pick? If anything can, this is the chance.

Lord knows both Edmonton and Columbus could use any excuse to take him in the top two. Will be very interested to see how he performs against (mostly) the big boys.

It is most likely that Murray will fill a spot until more players are added when the first round of the NHL playoffs are over.

Team Canada added two Chicago Black Hawk players today; Duncan Keith and Patrick Sharp. It is very uinderstandable that two players declined, one being Sidney Crosby, the other Jonathan Toews. Both battled through serious injury issues this season.

Really bad hit in France vs Khazakstan (via Puck Daddy)

(multi-angle replays of the hit 1:01 in)

The thing is, I don't see this as a malicious hit. The injured player was skating with his head down, changed direction to his left prior to impact, and put himself in a really bad position to get hit in open ice (when he should expect a hit). The player who got tossed didn't leave his feet, didn't change his angle, didn't extend his elbow, and did not intentionally target the head.

Thoughts?

edit: clarity on location of replay on video

Saw a replay on tsn this morning, did think it was a pretty blatant head shot. The IIHF rule is that any hit to the head is a penalty and if injury results you get what this guy got. He was given a 5 game suspension today. Well deserved, I say.

For awhile this afternoon, it looked like Finland was going to steamroller over Canada. They led in the second period 3-1 before Canada scored 4 unanswered goals to take a 5-3 win over the Finns. The game entered the third tied. Evander Kane score just oiver 6 minutes into the frame and Jordan Eberle scored an empty netter to seal the win.

It is a crime that these did not get more attention.

Funny day here in my latest expedition to the wilds of eastern NS. Every hospital has CTV on, but no one flips to TSN to check out a game that everyone's reporting on (Canada-Slovakia). I still think the IIHF world championships are only unimportant in the US, so the next few days will be very interesting up here for the sake of anger at Hockey Canada.
