You should be happy - the Flyers are much worse with him on the team.

except they're probably going to put him in the press box for Van Riemsdyk tomorrow.

I'm just surprised by that number. I thought it wouldn't be more than Cooke's last season, but Torres has had it coming for forever.

Ok. I'm really happy that Raffi is gone for a long time. He is a dirtbag and there is no place for him in the league.

That said, this is hilarious. Shanny is guessing on each and every one of these and he's in over his head.

Yeah, I'm happy with the result, but I still think this is an extremely flawed system. This is Torres' 3rd suspension of the year, 6th of his career. The first 5 are anywhere from 1-4 games, then it jumps to 25. It shouldn't take a 6th suspension to get the message through with the 25 game suspension. Escalate the suspensions for each repeat offense. 5, then 10, then 20, etc.

Completely agree. Why not give him 25 games in December when he took his second head shot suspension in a month. This is clearly a reaction to the horrible job he has done with supplemental discipline so far in the playoffs. Neal, a repeat offender, gets reviewed for two head shots in the same game, gets 1 game. Torres gets 25. WHAT?

Now don't get me wrong. I am totally fine with long suspensions for repeat offenders. I am completely fine with this suspension in a vacuum. It just strikes me as fishy when Shanny has already had the opportunity to send this guy a message (this is the third time he's given Torres a suspension) and he only chooses to do it after all the backlash last week. Kind of pathetic if you ask me. Put it this way. If James Neal comes out tomorrow and Cooke's Claude Giroux, does anyone believe that this heavy suspension precedent will carry over? I know I don't.

Edit - This is also tied for the second longest suspension in NHL History with Boulerice. Bertuzzi's "official" suspension was 20 games, though he was banned from the remainder of that season and playoffs and international play.

Chris Simon picked up a 30 and a 25 too. And technically, wasn't McSorley's a year, only he retired rather than sit out the next season?

McSorely's was 23 "officially". Simon is the crown winner with a 30 game suspension for being an obvious sociopath.

I don't know if this link goes in this thread of the "All Canucks are Douchenozzles" thread, but some players think Torres' suspension was too harsh: http://www.vancouver...8111/story.html. Daniel Sedin comes off as fairly reasonable here. But in a team full of idiots, Bieksa might be the biggest one.

Not saying that Giroux shouldn't get a game - he probably should - but based on the way these things have been handled in the past that would be a complete abortion of a decision.

Either the NHL establishes a standard and sticks with it or their process loses all credibility. You can't link punishment to injury when it suits your fancy and then ignore it when it doesn't.

This is simply false.

Giroux did not leave his feet, did not use his elbow and did not cause an injury. He also did not dish out multiple cheap shots in the same shift.

Again, I'm not defending him - in a world ruled by objective standards, I agree with a game because he gave him a head shot. But relative to the punishment handed out to Neal and others during this playoff season, a game would be a joke.

Giroux was bitching to the officials about a non-call right before this, a hit where the player clearly did not have possession of the puck any longer, the head was the principle point of contact, and the hit could easily have been avoided. However, on the filp side there was no injury and (I believe) there are no priors on Giroux.

In short, I have no freaking clue how this is going to come down. Would be surprised if nothing further is added, or if he got two games, so I guess it's between a fine and one game.

Down 3-1, practically, I doubt he gets a game. If he does, that is probably the end of the series. I don't think Shanny is going to do that.

Neal sorta left his feet (and I think it was more of a forearm than an elbow), but in a perfect world that's not supposed to matter - if the head is the prinicipal point of contact, it's the principal point of contact, regardless of whether or not the player leaves his feet or not. And Giroux was not injured despite his Ric Flair-like sell job of Neal's hit, and the NHL didn't give Neal anything for the Couturier hit, it was all his hit on Giroux.

The fact that the NHL ignored the hit on Couturier is not the same thing as pretending that it didn't happen.

Beyond that, I'm not going to get into a back and forth on who did what. I'll just say that anyone who can look at the 40 second (game time) span of action for Neal and say that what Giroux did yesterday is the same thing is looking at different video than I am.

And again, I say that not to absolve Giroux, but as a criticism of the lack of objective standards that the NHL has been using. I think Giroux will probably get a game, and I think that's about right. But the lack of consistency in how the NHL chooses to dole out punishments for illegal hits is a joke.

That's about right, and when they miss the next one that has all the right markers this suspension the merry-go-round continues.

I wonder if this lights a fire under Philly for game 5 that they wouldn't have had if he got off?

Been expecting more out of them the past two games, but NJ has been relentless with the forecheck and Philly doesn't seem to have an answer. Probably shouldn't have said "fire" but the shift in focus to how "wronged" they were as opposed to how outworked they have been might help them more than it hurts.

The Philly defense really has not been able to generate any sustained transition opportunities against NJ's forecheck. It makes me want to punch shit, because the Bruins would be exposing the same thing.

Given their lack of ability to handle the forecheck, it makes me think it's unlikely Philly comes back, but if I'm NJ you got to kill them now with their best player out. Letting them off the mat could easily lead to a Game 7, and who the fuck knows with the way those are going this year.

Definitely the right decision in a bubble. Playoff precedent probably says a fine was more reasonable though. What do you expect from a league run by incompetent morons though?
