Absolutely 0 options in the pen. Not one guy.

Morales was great today. He needs to get a look to close.

It must be Bobby's fault his starter gave up 7 runs and then both of his closers blew save opportunities.

Well, it's the first starts of the year for them. If they're unprepared for them, that certainly could be on the manager, especially when the team appeared poorly prepared early last season too.

Overall, you have to give the new manager and new GM an F so far, since the team just got swept. Obviously we need time to really make that grade mean anything, but I don't think it's terribly surprising that the bullpen has performed poorly. The Bailey injury would be a nice excuse if he was the picture of durability, but he wasn't, freaky injury or not.

I couldn't even blow a game like this in MLB the Show. Melancon doesn't have the stuff for the AL and Aceves doesn't have a closers mentality. Usually you don't put stock into the first series of the year but damn...

Cherington, Aceves and Melancon. The Triad of Suck.

Lucchino should be included too.

If we manage to win one game in Toronto it will be an improvement on our start last year. Teams gets swept, it happens. People are only panicking because it's the first series of the year.

At what point does booing on Friday become acceptable?

Not yet but there is a real chance that they will have less than three wins then so I would guess the first inning will work.

Like I said, it's pointless to blame Bobby V for his FO giving him a shit bullpen.

He recorded more outs that Aceves.

Blaming Valentine for this loss is utterly asinine.

Well, you could argue he should have left Padilla in, but I thought going to Aceves was the right move at the time, so I agree.

Bobby played the cards right. The pitchers were atrocious. Starting with Bucholz today. You cannot give up 3 to tie and then three to win like that. Anyone feeling good about Dubront now? Score 12 runs and lose. Pathetic.

Rationality? I think you don't understand gamethreading.

(Also, I'd say last year's finish and the less than inspiring offseason have a bit to do with it as well).

Seems like a pretty big stretch to me. What would Bobby V. supposed to do, have them starting pitching in February? You can prepare the players all you want, and by all accounts Bobby V. did run a rigorous camp. But in the end, it's their fault if they go out and perform terribly.

Having Ellsbury Pedroia Lester and Gonzalez in the primes of their careers is a waste. This team has about a dozen guys they could cut and replace with waiver wire filler and no one would notice.

Name them.

Name about a dozen guys who are worse than waiver wire filler.

All of their potential flaws were exposed at the same time, so in part I agree. But those flaws are very real and don't appear to be going away without a trade or two. The bullpen is a massive cause for concern.

With all due respect I don't like likability has anything to do with it. I could care less if Bobby V mames puppies at night provided this team wins. They just need to figure out the structure of this pen and fast.

Yes, this isn't on Valentine. In fact, most of the pen and roster is Theo's creation so of the depahted, I'd blame him most. Someone else observed that Theo got out when the getting was good - he saddled this team with the albatross contracts of Crawford and Lackey which are constraining them such that they can only obtain mediocrity at the back end of the pen. You can't expect guys like Aceves and Melacon to become elite closers when all they have ever been is middle relievers.

Maybe we can use this opportunity to recall that there are 159 games left in the season. It might be a bit early to pack it in.

I do miss Theo though. I really hate Lucky; even when it's not his fault . . . it's still his fault.
