It will be interesting to see how Robertson does this year. He's another guy that outperformed his peripherals by a significant margin last year.

I think its easier for teams like the Rays and Padres to put together good pens because of the park factors of their home park, or so I told myself as I watched Padilla, Melancon, and Aceves shit their pants yesterday.

Sadly, they shit the pants in Detroit which is also a pitcher's park.

TB's bottom half of the line-up is much worse than Boston's. This game was over at the end of the 7th inning.

Six through nine in the Sox lineup yesterday (Sweeney, Ross, Salty, Aviles). It isn't very scary at all. But neither is Tampa's.

Once Crawford returns I would prefer it to a bottom four of Swisher (.822 OPS), Ibanez (.707 OPS), Gardner (.732 OPS) and Gardner (.713 OPS).

Not too bad, 2 automatic outs coming up after Pena. Hopefully one of them is a DP.

Maddon is an idiot. Why take away the power option from your best power hitter?

PS: West may be the worst umprie in the big leauges.

Agreed. Gameday has Pitch #4 to Pena right over the plate and not particularly low.

It's better against righties. Gardner only bats once.

About that: by May, Sweeney and Ross will be two halves of a platoon that projects to be about two wins better than the Red Sox' 2011 RF situation. Even if Crawford doesn't improve (doubtful) and Ellsbury regresses a bit, they should be better in the OF than the lineup that led the majors in runs scored.

I think most people consider Aviles promising offensively — ZIPS likes Aviles a touch better than Jeter, for example. He may turn out to be a liability as a defensive shortstop, however.

Saltalamacchia is a cypher. I have no idea what to expect.

Yeah, I'd say Martin and Salty are a wash offensively even though Salty had the better OPS last year. But the Yankees traded away their offensively minded catching prospect and the Red Sox still have theirs. Lavarnway will probably make an impact at some point this year.

In defense of Maddon, Johnson and Molina are pretty much automatic outs, no matter what.

Still probably should have had the bunt play earlier in the count though.

Wow. 95 MPH at the knees on the outside corner to get the K against Joyce. And the Rays do not in fact score their second shot with the tying run on third and 0 out. They do however get Longoria to the plate once more.

Piniella and Kay were hilarious that inning, it took them two batters to figure out why Luke Scott wasn't pinch hitting (because, um, he hit the inning before). I'm surprised the producer let them go as long as they did, Piniella is a disaster.

Why wins are a dumb and useless stat:

Jon Lester yesterday: 7.0 ip, 6 h, 1 r, 1 er, 3 bb, 4 k, in line for the loss before a Sox 9th inning rally
CC Sabathia today: 6.0 ip, 8 h, 5 r, 5 er, 3 bb, 7 k, probably gets the win

EDIT: And Valverde yesterday: 1.0 ip, 3 h, 2 r, 2 er, 0 bb, 1 k, blows a save but gets the win when the Tigers score one in the 9th

What in the world made YES think: A. they needed to add to their already ridiculously large roster of announcers and B. that a senile guy would be the best addition?

It's a credit to Maddon's bullpen management in this game that Girardi didn't get a chance to use Andruw Jones to mash a lefty.

He could have hit him for Gardner against McGee earlier but he stuck with the better defender.
