Hubris on my part bringing attention to it after just 5. Ruined by James freaking McDonald of all people with 2 out in the 6th.

It's in the finest tradition of this thread to point out that a pitcher is doing something of interest right before it vanishes. Not hubris - just good timing on your part.

More seriously, if you're watching the game and just have "that feeling" that you're watching something that could be special, the 5th or 6th inning is just about the time I'd mention it.

As it turns out, that one hit to the pitcher was all that stood between Matt Cain and a perfect game. Complete-game, one-hit shutout with no walks and no errors. There were a few great fielding plays, too, so on another day it's possible he'd have given up two or three hits.

Practically speaking, since he didn't believe he swung and he didn't start to run, it was too late to start at the point you're suggesting. There's no way he would have been close to beating it unless he started right at the checked swing.

That's right up there with Bradshaw falling into the endzone as far as memorable ways to end it.
