Hensen, Marshall, Barnes all declare

Can't wait for matching announcements from Rivers and Plumlee

I wonder if Barnes told Roy he was leaving via Skype chat? He'll quickly be forgotten around Chapel Hill.

Kendall makes me sad because he was just starting to scratch the surface of his immense talent by adding in a nice scoring touch to go along with his elite passing skills...the other two I pretty much had as a given. Well, it's Marcus Paige's show to run now.

I think Kendall Marshall is going to get a rude awakening in the NBA. Great passing skills can only take a mediocre athlete with a mediocre, at best, jumpshot so far.

I dunno isn't that pretty much what Jason Kidd has gotten by with his entire career.

Marshall strikes me as more Ed Cota or Marcus Williams than Jason Kidd. Plus, Kidd improved a ton as a shooter, and also made 8 NBA 1st or 2nd all-defensive teams. Marshall can't play a lick of D (or at least didn't at UNC).

Kidd also is one of the greatest rebounding guards in the history of the game. He averaged nearly 6 RPG in his college career, a number that has gone up in his NBA career. And Tims is right, the defense isn't even close. Not that it's the best measure, but Kidd had 200+ steals in his 2 years at Cal, and ranks 2nd in NBA history in steals (he's not going to come close to Stockton). Marshall has 83 in 2 years at UNC.

Marshall is a lot bigger than Cota, which gives him a better chance to stick in the league, and he's also faster. Marcus Williams is a great comparison, and he didn't have much of an impact in the NBA. Steve Blake is a good comparison too. The question scouts will have to ask themselves is did Marshall make the guys around him that much better? Or were his assist totals inflated by playing with some great scorers. Hurley had the same issue with Hill and Laettner. We don't know what Hurley might have been had it not been for the car accident, but he did show he could stick in the league.

Looking at the young talent at PG in the NBA, I don't see Marshall stacking up with Rose, Rondo, Westbrook, Irving, Wall, Evans, Knight, Teague, Walker. Those guys are just a different class of athlete than Marshall. He'll be a good backup if he accepts that role and works hard at it, like Blake has.

Marcus Williams could have had a decent NBA career but ran into some personal problems. but otherwise their games are very similar.

Rumblings that Andre Dawkins has dropped out of school. Everything went wrong for that kid from day one. Left high school early to help Duke when Elliot Williams transfered, then his sister died in the car accident on her way to see him play a game. Never got going after that, such a tragic situation. Hope he succeeds wherever he goes, whatever he does, he seems like a good kid. But Duke now really needs to get aggressive with the late signing recruits. Sulamain can play for sure, but depth is an issue.

now go get Oriakhi

Oriakhi met with Calipari yesterday, going to take a big bag of cash to get him away from UK. I also didn't realize until recently UNC is losing Stilman White for the next 2 years while he goes on his mormon mission. Not a huge loss, but given the lack of experience on next year's team, it does hurt a little.

Mason Plumlee back to Duke for senior season. Better than having him gone, but not a huge deal in my book. Next year is going to be a charle foxtrot anyway, unless duke lucks out and gets some new players (Parker?) to announce for Duke tomorrow night.

Shabazz Muhammed is headed to UCLA, Amile Jefferson either UK or NC State (likely NC State but coach Cal is working him hard still). That leaves Parker, who is announcing tonight, for Duke. They could use the front court depth next season, but more than that they need Cook, Murphy and Hairston to all step into more substantial roles. ACC is going to be up for grabs next season, more so than any season I can remember since the mid 90s.

If Leslie returns, they have to be the favorite. If he leaves, it changes everything. Toughest matchup in the ACC right now, he's a different level of athlete. Without him, they're good but not great.

Gbinije transfer rumors flying

He's meeting with coaches today, but meantime he was seen working his student job on Sunday:
http://dukechronicle...st-campus-store

Duke's targeting Rodney Hood as a transfer, who would fill a similar role to Mike G, so we'll see how it all works out. If Hood replaces Mike, it's a wash. Murphy will take most of the minutes as the swing next year anway, along with Dawkins, Mike G may be the odd man out. Having said all that, if he leaves, that would make 6 schools in 6 years from him. Gotta stick to something eventually. Also, not playing as a freshman doesn't mean you won't make it to the NBA. Lance Thomas has managed to catch on with the Hornets this year and he barely got off the bench as a freshman at Duke.

Andre Dawkins has been suspended for a violation of team rules. He may redshirt next season, Duke says he is still on the team for now but his status will be decided next fall. I am guessing we've seen the last of him in a Duke uniform.

Edit: not suspended, but he may redshirt next year. Sounds like he is trying to figure some things out in his life, can't be easy to go through what he did at that age. Hope he gets everything put back together, and if that includes basketball, even better.

Edit 2: Dawkins dad says he's still struggling with the death of his sister.
http://www.cbssports...irt-next-season

Dawkins' father, Andre Sr. told Stephen Wiseman of the Durham Herald-Sun that his son is still dealing with the after-affects of his sister's death. Lacey Dawkins, then 21, was killed in a car crash on her way to see Dawkins play at Duke in 2009.

"He's dealt with a lot. It's been tough. It hasn't been easy at all," Dawkins' father told the Raleigh News & Observer. "With the fast pace of playing high-level basketball you don't really get time to deal with things like that."

Another major change for the ACC next season: Stoglin is going pro after being told he would be suspended for next season at Maryland:
http://www.cbssports...n-headed-to-nba

Mychal Parker is also suspended for the season. Maryland looked like they had the talent to be a top4-5 ACC team next season, but this probably ends that hope.

so it looks like Gbinije is transferring to Syracuse. I find this somewhat curious as 1) Syracuse rarely takes transfers; 2) Boeheim and Coach K are buddies; and 3) Syracuse will soon be a conference foe. I'm interested to hear from any Duke fans what their impressions are of Gbinije and the move to Syracuse. If he was some kind of bad citizen I would have expected Coach K to communicate that to Boeheim.

Mike G is a good kid, he just didn't think it was the right fit. Duke also has been going after a lot of wing players lately, Mike probably saw the writing on the wall.

His teammates say he was one of the best athletes on the team. He came in with the rep of being a solid wing defender, not a great offensive player. This year, he struggled with the team defense Duke runs and didn't see much time. I saw them play live only twice this season, and both times I was impressed with Mike's attentiveness. Sitting closely behind the Duke bench for the game at BC, I noticed every timeout he was in the huddle, right over the coaches, listening closely to every word they said. While on the bench, his eyes never left the court. I know it sounds small, but most kids who end up transferring aren't paying attention during stoppages and huddles.

However, Syracuse will make his 5th or 6th school in 6 years. The kid bounced all over the place in high school, just never liked where he was at. To me, that says he's lacking maturity and doesn't want to accept that the problem may be with him, not the schools. Now he's pretty much out of options, so he either sucks it up and plays at Cuse, or he's done with hoops.

K and Jimmy B are close, and K has never prevented any kid from transferring to any school, as far as I can remember. K can't be too worried about facing this kid for 3 years as an ACC foe, at best he's a solid bench contributor for Cuse in a couple years.

Only highlight I can remember, Number 2 Top play from the BC game.

Hubert Davis is leaving ESPN to join Roy Williams' staff at UNC. Hubert has worked his way into his role and become a very good announcer and analyst, and beyond that is one of the truly great people I have ever worked with, an outstanding man and father. He had told me in the past he didn't think he'd want to coach because he didn't see himself as a recruiter and he didn't love the idea of not being able to spend most of the offseason with his young kids. Clearly he's still got the hoops bug and wants to give this a shot, I'm sure he'll have a big impact on UNC's approach to the game.

I thought you couldn't transfer within conference?

To answer this, the ACC rule is you sit out 2 years and lose 1 year of eligibility if you transfer to another ACC school, same as most conferences. Its to prevent tampering. But since Cuse and Pitt aren't current ACC schools, Duke would have had to add them to the list. Coach K didn't see a need to do so, probably because of his relationship with Boeheim through USA Hoops. He also may have decided it wasn't worth the PR hit that Wisconsin and St. Joe's have taken in the last year. More here:

I'm surprised Jay Bilas hasn't gotten back into coaching. He probably makes more money doing what he does plus practicing law anyways. Plus, he works the LeBron Skills Academy camps during the summer so he gets his coaching fix. Still, I'd take him as a coach any day of the week.

Jay has no interest in returning to coaching, as far as he's told me. He loves what he does at ESPN, and he also really enjoys being able to work for his law firm. He doesn't handle a case load, and he cuts back during the season, but he does a little work with his firm even during March. I think Jay could have a head coaching position in a major conference if he wanted next year, but he isn't interested. Rece Davis calls him the "underground commissioner of college hoops" and he's exactly right. When coaches have trouble teaching a team or player something, they call Jay. When coaches need help with a scouting report, they call Jay. He's one of the most respected voices in the game, he just doesn't seem interested in recruiting, dealing with the NCAA, or having it be a 24-7, 365-days a year job. He could change his mind like Hubert, but I doubt it at this point.

On the other hand I know Fran Fraschilla and Doug Gottlieb would like to be head coaches and applied for jobs this year. I think both would be great candidates to replace Hubert on GameDay (I'm sure many disagree with me on that though).

The other names I've heard for GameDay are Adrian Branch and Jay Williams. I don't think they'd double up with 2 Duke guys on there, so Williams is unlikely. But Branch has a lot of similar qualities to Hubert and would be a good option. Bardo would be another possibility, I think he would be great.

He's a really athletic wing, and will likely only play 1 year at Duke after sitting out next year. He's got to improve his mid-range and outside jumper before then, but if he does even a little bit he will be a lottery pick.

Coach K has gone after the wing players hard lately, this is a great get. Looks like he's making one last push for that 5th title.
