Kicking this thread off because Rafael DePaula got his visa at long last (signed in Nov 2010), and looks like he'll be at Low A Charleston.

Charleston will also have Jose Campos in the rotation, and Gary Sanchez, Mason Williams and Dante Bichette, Jr. in the lineup, fun team to follow.

The first one he was seemingly throwing strikes and just getting hammered, two disastrous outings in different ways, and today's looks even worse with the bullpen behind him pitching great after he left. Just two games, though.

Betances had a good first start (5IP, 6ks, 1BB) brutal second one though.

And I am not ready to abandon Banuelos, you know the Yankee fan mantra "It'll be fine."

He bats cleanup for the Riverdogs, right behind Dante Bichette Jr. (.324, .780 OPS) and just ahead of Gary Sanchez (.310, .773). Mason Williams is leading off and hitting .308 with a .773 OPS. Five steals in six tries this season.

Not that it means a whole ton, but in the pre-season we started hearing from the national prospect experts a little buzz about Austin. So to follow up with a nice early performance kinda makes him a little more intriguing.

Dellin Betances went 4 2/3 giving up 7 hits, 5 runs, 4 walks, and 4 Ks. 96 pitches, 44 for strikes.

That Charleston team is awesome, Austin/Sanchez/Williams went a combined 8 for 14 tonight, and Campos' season numbers are now 16 5 2 1 4 18.

It's a good thing that Pineda has essentially jumped Betances/Banuelos in line, and also that Phelps has looked good so far, because those two have been terrible so far this season.

Dunno what was going on in Charleston tonight, but West Virginia stole 5 bases in 5 tries against Gary Sanchez, who was doing well throwing out runners before tonight.

But here's the odd part: Charleston went 7 for 7 in steals themselves, including 3 by Sanchez (all of second base).

Mason Williams went 4-for-4 today with a homer and double in a 9-4 Charleston victory. He's now hitting .347 with a .505 SLG and .882 OPS.

Jesus (Christ, not Montero) -- the Yanks are getting no luck with pitching injuries lately. Not seen a lot of Campos but his numbers to start the season were very impressive. Hope the MRI shows good news, but it sounds ominous.

Really, I spent half the day the Yankees acquired Pineda bitching about the deal, and that was before I realized that Compos was also included in the deal....

That was a great trade for NY (and could still be), but so far, they've gotten totally boned.

And his teammate Tyler Austin continues to be the front-runner for NY's minor league player of the year, 13 HRs and 13 SBs (1 CS) in 196 ABs, 1.070 OPS. Austin is 20, Sanchez 19.

Sanchez has 11 errors this season behind the plate. I guess it's not unusual to see a young player in Class A make that many errors, regardless of position. Plenty of time to add some polish.

Just for fun I went through the 11 C who are currently qualified for the batting title in the majors, and 7 of the 11 had at least one minor league season with 11+ errors. If he's pushing 20 by the end of the year, that's a little less common, though AJP and Carlos Santana did similarly.

Of course, Sanchez has made 11 errors in 48 games. Project that over a full minor league season and you're at 30 errors.

Again, though, this is Class A ball. He's 19 and learning a tough position. I would bet at least half of his errors are throwing the ball. Jeter made 56 errors at SS when he was 19 and playing A ball. Mantle made about as many in D ball when he was 18 and got moved from SS to OF the next year. Ripken made 35 errors in AA ball when he was 19. It's all part of the process, certainly something that young professionals must clean up as they rise thru the minors.

Also errors are somewhat subjective even on the MLB level, god only knows how accurate they are in low A.

What I do know is that 5 HRs and 3 doubles in 7 games (his output this past week) makes up for quite a bit of defensive ineptitude.

Probably a combination of the defensive issues, and the attitude problems he had last year.

On an unrelated note, Dellin Betances has been awful this year in AAA, a 5.92 ERA and 56 BBs in 62.1 IP. He is already 24, so he's starting to run out of time a bit.

And on a rare bright note for NY's prospects this year, Rafael DePaula is finally pitching, in the Dominican Summer League. His second start was dominant, 5 1 0 0 0 7:

Pardon my ignorance, but why did Gary Sanchez repeat levels anyway?

My best guess: He doesn't turn 20 until December and the development staff doesn't see the need to fast-track him at age 19. He was signed at 16 and his bat is way ahead of his glove.
Yanks have four catchers on the High A Tampa roster, including 20-year-old J.R. Murphy, a second-round pick in 2009, and 22-year-old Kyle Higashioka, a seventh-rounder in 2008. Murphy is hitting .234 this season. Higashioka is at .219 and a 24-year-old named Tyson Blaser is hitting .355 in 76 ABs with no power.
With none of those guys doing much at Tampa, Murphy might get pushed up to High A later this season.
