No broken bones is good for him but does not, by itself, equal fine.Cano was hit on the left hand by Orioles pitcher, Troy Patton. He left the game shortly thereafter. No broken bones, though.

Can't wait to see how the Yanks are going to put together their 2014 team, while staying under the $189 budget they've said they will be under.

Yeah, I've been meaning to post that I don't think this is really going to happen, especially with Cano being a Boras guy now. No way they let him or Granderson walk, and even if they let Swisher go (quite possible, even though they have no replacement really), $189M seems close to impossible to achieve without really impacting the ability of the team to contend.
Tex - $22.5 million
CC - $24.4 million
ARod - $27.5 million
Jeter - $8 million
That's what we know for sure. We also need to factor in things like medical costs, pension payouts etc. that every team pays, and that (oddly enough) count as payroll for luxury tax purposes. These come to about $10 million/year. So , we've got four spots (three of them by players who could very well be corpses by 2014, but that's a whole other discussion) that are going to cost $82 million. Add in the pension etc. costs, we're at $92 million so far.
Now we need to make some assumptions, tell me if you have a problem with these numbers.First, we add Grandy and Cano, because there is no way in hell they let them walk. Cashman has already said as much. I think $40 million for both is fair (and in fact, likely very conservative). So we're at $132 million. I don't want to try to figure out all the arb guys, just look at the main ones. Gardner will be 3rd year arb, and looking at what he's making now, and his numbers, I'm thinking $8 million sounds right. Nova and Pineda will be 1st year arb, and I think $5 million combined is fair. So we're at $145 million, and this is what we have to show for it:
SP# 1: CC
SP# 2: Nova
SP# 3: Pineda
SP# 4:
SP# 5:
1B: Tex
2B: Cano
SS: Jeter
3B: ARod
LF: Gardner
CF: Grandy
RF:
DH:
You still need three SP, an entire BP, an entire bench, not to mention a starting RF/DH/C. All told, you need 16 players, and you have $44 million to spend on it. That's about $2.7 million/player. Basically, the Yanks only prayer right now of having a good team is that a significant number of prospects can turn into impact MLB players from now until them, being paid league minimum and allowing NY to divert their share elsewhere AND they need to hope that their aging stars don't go downhill too quickly. I don't see that as even remotely likely.
And none of this is factoring in the fact that the bulk of your money (Tex/Jeter/ARod) is probably going to be spent on old, underperforming players who very possibly will spend significant time on the DL. I think the only players on the team who will be true superstars in 2014 are Cano, CC, and probably Grandy.
And another thing that could put a whole mess into this is ARods "marketing bonuses" for HR milestones. Those aren't calculate in his salary now, but if/when they're earned they will be applied against luxury tax. So if the Yanks think there's even a possible chance that he could trip one in 2014, they're going to have to leave room in their salary in case he does (each one is $6 million). Because if they go over the cap in 2014, even by a dollar, then all of this is for nothing. In terms of the rebates and other incentives, the Yanks stand to lose about $50 million in 2014 if they go over the cap, whether that be by $1 or $10 million.
Food for thought, at least.
I think this shoud be it's own thread, but I can't start threads, so here will do.
