Cano was hit on the left hand by Orioles pitcher, Troy Patton. He left the game shortly thereafter. No broken bones, though.

BryanHoch Cano had x rays and they were negative. "He's fine," Girardi said

No broken bones is good for him but does not, by itself, equal fine.
Carl Yastrzemski led the league in batting average in 1968. He hit 40 homers in 1969. He hit 40 homers and very nearly led the league in batting average in 1970. He started off the 1971 season hotter than ever then had a hand injury somewhere around the end of April. He ended up hitting .254 and slugging . 392 that season. But he didn't have broken bones!

X-Rays do not rule out broken bones, they only confirm broken bones. He would need an MRI ro rule it out, but they probably would not do that unless the pain lingers.

As RC said, even if it is not broken, he could have a deep bone bruise that could take as long as a fracture to heal, and while he could play through it, his performance would be affected.

He is probably ok, but if I had a nickel for everytime someone was judged ok based on a X-Ray and turned out to have a small fracture/deep bone bruise, I would have a lot of nickels.

It seems insane to me than an MLB team wouldn't just pay to do the MRI in a situation like this. Why screw around with such a valuable asset as a ballplayer who draws a 8 figure salary? It seems like you'd want to be as thorough as possible.

Pedroia Rulz!!1!

Thought I'd just get that out of the way, as the comps will be inevitable any time one of the two goes on a hot or cold streak. And MLB network did their top ten series for each position this off season, with their in house metric declaring Cano the best second baseman in baseball, with Pedroia ranking second. The analysts on set mostly agreed that they'd be thrilled to have either one on their team, though.

It'll be interesting to see how much attention this injury gets if Cano starts off slow. It's probably not going to be something that lingers too long, but a cold start to the season will kick off the speculation... then he'll go on a three week tear hitting .450/.520/.610 and it'll be forgotten.

During the broadcast, MLB mentioned Cano's 11 game hit streak, he was hitting .422 before the game, and with another 2 hits, up to .444. With 5 homers, his OPS during the last 11? 1.278

Surprisingly he's only been walked once in the last 11 games

He's doing okay.

Ridiculously good....which is great to see, as a Jays fan. when the time comes to extend him (and Grandy, who I'm also happy to see is doing very well) the price for both will be sky high.

Can't wait to see how the Yanks are going to put together their 2014 team, while staying under the $189 budget they've said they will be under. I think it's going to be the worst Yankee team in since 1993 Yanks.

Yeah, I've been meaning to post that I don't think this is really going to happen, especially with Cano being a Boras guy now. No way they let him or Granderson walk, and even if they let Swisher go (quite possible, even though they have no replacement really), $189M seems close to impossible to achieve without really impacting the ability of the team to contend.

Yeah, I'm assuming they let Swish walk. They have too. The obligations for 2014:

Tex - $22.5 million

CC - $24.4 million

ARod - $27.5 million

Jeter - $8 million

That's what we know for sure. We also need to factor in things like medical costs, pension payouts etc. that every team pays, and that (oddly enough) count as payroll for luxury tax purposes. These come to about $10 million/year. So , we've got four spots (three of them by players who could very well be corpses by 2014, but that's a whole other discussion) that are going to cost $82 million. Add in the pension etc. costs, we're at $92 million so far.

Now we need to make some assumptions, tell me if you have a problem with these numbers.First, we add Grandy and Cano, because there is no way in hell they let them walk. Cashman has already said as much. I think $40 million for both is fair (and in fact, likely very conservative). So we're at $132 million. I don't want to try to figure out all the arb guys, just look at the main ones. Gardner will be 3rd year arb, and looking at what he's making now, and his numbers, I'm thinking $8 million sounds right. Nova and Pineda will be 1st year arb, and I think $5 million combined is fair. So we're at $145 million, and this is what we have to show for it:

SP# 1: CC

SP# 2: Nova

SP# 3: Pineda

SP# 4:

SP# 5:

C:

1B: Tex

2B: Cano

SS: Jeter

3B: ARod

LF: Gardner

CF: Grandy

RF:

DH:

You still need three SP, an entire BP, an entire bench, not to mention a starting RF/DH/C. All told, you need 16 players, and you have $44 million to spend on it. That's about $2.7 million/player. Basically, the Yanks only prayer right now of having a good team is that a significant number of prospects can turn into impact MLB players from now until them, being paid league minimum and allowing NY to divert their share elsewhere AND they need to hope that their aging stars don't go downhill too quickly. I don't see that as even remotely likely.

And none of this is factoring in the fact that the bulk of your money (Tex/Jeter/ARod) is probably going to be spent on old, underperforming players who very possibly will spend significant time on the DL. I think the only players on the team who will be true superstars in 2014 are Cano, CC, and probably Grandy.

And another thing that could put a whole mess into this is ARods "marketing bonuses" for HR milestones. Those aren't calculate in his salary now, but if/when they're earned they will be applied against luxury tax. So if the Yanks think there's even a possible chance that he could trip one in 2014, they're going to have to leave room in their salary in case he does (each one is $6 million). Because if they go over the cap in 2014, even by a dollar, then all of this is for nothing. In terms of the rebates and other incentives, the Yanks stand to lose about $50 million in 2014 if they go over the cap, whether that be by $1 or $10 million.

Food for thought, at least.

I think this shoud be it's own thread, but I can't start threads, so here will do.
