The Yankees have signed Pettitte to a 1-year minor league deal worth $2.5 million.

Less than 3 weeks ago, Pettitte admitted that he had thoughts about a comeback. Now Pettitte, who didn't pitch in 2011, is returning.

Whoa. Not sure how that makes any sense at all, especially since NY already has five AAA starters who are all genuine prospects to one degree or another (Phelps/Mitchell/Warren/Banuelos/Betances), but OK, welcome back. We could have used you last year, big man...

Maybe now Betances gets moved to the pen? Maybe they move Phelps, Mitchell or Warren for an outfielder?

The good thing about Pettitte is if he cannot pitch (keep in mind he was injured the second half of 2010 and struggled when he did return) I think he would be the first to pull the plug on this.

That's a little misleading, his regular season starts were just preparation for his postseason starts, both of which were very strong (almost identical 7 IP, 2 ERs, 5 Hs outings).

I know this is really silly of me to say and very early, but if this is true....How does this NOT open the door to a trade? The Yankee roster can't support this many starters.

Garcia would likely be very available as soon as NY decides that Pettitte can really contribute, and maybe one of the AAA guys too.

I think it's more likely that Hughes goes. He doesn't really fit as a match for the bullpen at this point and he's wasted as the 6th starter on the team. He only has 1 minor league option left. In addition, he becomes a free agent soon and one that likely hurts their plan to get under $189m.

Andy won't be ready to pitch until May. Until then, Hughes is the 5th starter and Cashman hopes to raise his trade value.

All of that is true, but he's the #4 guy for 2013 as of now. If you move him, you're either counting on stopgaps (Kuroda/Pettitte) or young unproven guys (Banuelos/Betances, etc) to fill two spots in 2013.

Agreed but what do you do with him until then? Pitching out of the bullpen for a year certainly won't prepare him to be the 4th guy in 2013.

"In an appearance on YES, Brian Cashman said the team offered Pettitte a substantial contract back in December, around $10-12MM. He decided to work out on his own to see how he felt before accepting, but basically told the team to plan on not having him. Following the Pineda and Kuroda moves, Cashman told Pettitte to stop working out because they didn’t have room for him. Andy kept going and here we are."

I imagine should this work out a trade could eventaully happen, but Cashman was on with Francesa this afternoon, and he said that Pettitte wouldn't be able to join the majors until May 1st at the earliest.

As of now, I would think the expected rotation is the same as it was a week ago. As Pettitte starts making his minor league starts (Cashman did say, probably in Tampa because of weather) and as we get closer to May, that is when we will begin to see more speculation on who is the odd man out....whether it is to the bullpen or to another team we'll see.

Garcia was the odd man out even before this, especially with no bullpen experience. Amazing that a guy who started game 3 of the ALDS last year is now their 7th starter.

Twitter is going nuts about what a great reporter Jack Curry is and how everyone should be giving him credit for breaking this story. I've defended Curry's journalistic skills here before and do think he's a good reporter, but for crying out loud, he's a YES employee and this was a Yankee signing, that's really not a scoop.

It could be just a depth signing. But with 6 SP'ers and a farm system stocked with almost ready SP prospects, I wonder if Pineda (low velo) and Garcia (hand-memo to Yanks docs, you can not rule OUT a fracture with X-Ray) played a role in the decision by the Yankees to sign him now.

In any event, if the staff is healthy, and stays relatively healthy, they will have plenty of trade bait to fill any holes as the season progresses.

Baseball network reported on TV that Pettitte was offered $10M in December, but deferred taking it because he wanted to start working out to see if he really was serious enough to commit to it. then Kuroda and Pineda were acquired. Pettitte continued working out in spite of that, and that they worked out the deal for 1/4 of that much more recently. He's nothing if not honest about his commitment if he's willing to work through an ~$8M loss and comeback anyway.

No way I'd let Hughes go easily if I were the Yankees. He could be an asset in the bullpen this year and still throw 175+ innings in '13. Nothing wrong with that, even at the deal he'll get in arbitration. And relieving might keep that value down anyway.

According to B-Ref he made 125 million over his career, so he can afford the pay cut. Just needs enough to cover meals at home and an apartment in NY. Whats left of 2.5 million after taxes should just about do it.

Nah, even in retirement, their ages still add up to 118

Phil Hughes could quickly emerge as a trade candidate for the Yankees as well, writes Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Pettitte threw 32 pitches and 3 innings in A ball Monday night, he's aiming for 50 pitches in his next start over the weekend. Adding 15 pitches per start and he could be ready to go 80 pitches on the 24th or 95 pitches on the 29th. They'll probably take it somewhat slow with him unless Garcia really shits the bed, so maybe he'd join NY around May 4.
