It was a lot of fun to be out there again though. My score would have been lower if I could get off the tee, I made 3 triple bogeys and 3 doubles because of either out of bounds tee shots or lost balls off the tee. Surprisingly, my short game is still there (didn't have a 3 putt all day, probably around 28 all day). I felt very comfortable from 100 yards and in, and that new Nike wedge was fun to use.
My problem is I'm scared to release the club head. On the driving range I can hit my driver wherever I want, on a tight course like yesterday I found myself steering the club head instead of releasing it through the ball and letting my swing do the work. I also think I was standing a little too far from the ball, which led to swinging over the ball because I was trying to reach the ball.
Can't wait to get back out.

I was in Las Vegas last week and went nuts with the golf. Played my annual treat at Bali Hai, then went to my spot at Desert Pines. Both are pretty expensive, (I would say Bali Hai is overpriced at $199.00)
I went back to Desert Pines on Monday for their weekday rate and someone bought the place out for the afternoon. So I ended up at Las Vegas National, an old school course. (Site of the plane landing scene in Casino, and home of some early PGA tournaments) Wow.. I loved it. Especially at $59.00. I ended up playing there two days in a row.
i've been playing the National (its the old Sands' hotel course) for the past few years while not as pumped up as most of the others, I've found its a great reasonable place to play

I'll probably pick up some rain gear, but I don't know what works and what's good. It's also probably not going to get over 50, so it's going to be cold and wet. Help me out here.

Goretex [or equivalent] pants and jacket are nice. Waterproof shoes are very important.
If it is going to be cold, you might want to wear good thermal underwear. I discovered this last winter, when I did not go for more than two weeks all winter without a round of golf. What a miracle that was!

Yes, it's still very much required. One thing I've learned in my years of playing in the rain in the Northwest is that almost all rain gear made for golf sucks. I made the switch to rain gear made for hikers and will never go back. I have Mountain Hardware Epic jacket and pants. They are no more expensive than a good rain suit but weigh almost nothing and are 100% waterproof in all conditions. I just played a Pro-Am 2 days ago in the pouring rain. Everyone else's rain gear failed after a few holes while mine lasted the whole round without incident (we had a cart and umbrella too). For regular pants I wear anything by Columbia in their Omni-Shield line. They are not waterproof but water resistant and stain resistant. I've never had pants stand up to the Oregon drizzle and mud for multiple rounds of golf like these pants do. Aslo, get more than one pair of rain gloves. They are meant to get wet to keep grip with your clubs but your hands can get very cold after a few holes if it's not very warm out.So I have the 'warm' part of it taken care of, just not the 'wet' part. I'm even wondering if rain gear is necessary as I'll have a golf umbrella and be riding in cart most of the time.

Also look at clothing made for cyclists. I have a cycling rain jacket that has removable sleeves and it is great when the weather is drizzly.

For a better value (comparable courses, much less money) try Crosswinds. For an equivalent value (but a perfect example of the bloated clubhouse), try Waverly Oaks.
Plymouth is a golf mecca.

Falcon's Fires is very good.
Orange County National is, as Zomp stated, a terrific facility with 36 holes.
I liked the Internatinal Course at Championsgate, but the other course not so much.

Went to Tom Spargo today (highly recommended if you're in the southern NE area, Golf Digest Top 100 club fitter) and hit at least 20 different club heads with 10 different shafts. Exhausting. Lasted a few hours but it was a fun time.
I ended up with Wilson FG Tour V2 irons, 4-PW, with KBS Tour stiff shafts. + 1/2 inch (which he said was weird, because I'm only 5'10''...but I got it around much better than the standard loft)
So now my set up is:
Taylor Made R9 with Aldila NV 70 gram shaft, stiff.
Taylor Made Burner 15 degree 3 wood with Aldila NV 65 gram shaft, stiff
Adams Insight XTD 5 Wood, 20 degrees, Aldila DVS 65 gram shaft, stiff
Adams Idea A705 3 Iron Hybrid, Graffaloy Pro Launch, Stiff
Wilson FG Tour V2 irons, 4-PW, with KBS Tour stiff shafts. + 1/2 inch
Nike Victory 56 degree Wedge
A blade putter that I bought from Martin's Golf World in Myrtle Beach 12 years ago when I was 15 for $19.99
Golf Pride red and black cord grips.
Very excited to play. Irons should be in my hand in about 10 days.

So what's the deal here? I didn't lose any distance, actually seemed to hit the ball better and further in some instances. Are my clubs too long for me?

Here's a simple way to check for yourself from golf.about.com:Question for those in the know. During a recent round I began toying with choking down on a driver on a narrow par 4 instead of going to a fairway wood off the tee. I hit the ball great and proceeded to choke down on all my clubs for the remainder of that round. Hit the ball much more solidly than I am accustomed. I then decided to choke down my entire next round and hit the ball great.
So what's the deal here? I didn't lose any distance, actually seemed to hit the ball better and further in some instances. Are my clubs too long for me?
Shaft Length
Once the shaft is installed, you must then determine the proper length. This is just as important as flex, torque or anything else to do with the shaft.
HOW TO DETERMINE LENGTH: To determine the length of your club, stand at attention and have someone measure from the crease where your wrist and hand meet to the floor. Do this with both hands and take an average.
If you measure:
• 29 to 32 inches, your irons should be based on a 5-iron of 37 inches
• 33-34 inches, your irons should be based on a 5-iron of 37 1/2 inches
• 35-36 inches, your irons should be based on a 5-iron of 38 inches
• 37-38 inches, your irons should be based on a 5-iron of 38 1/2 inches
• 39-40 inches, your irons should be based on a 5-iron of 39 inches
• 41 or more inches, your irons should be based on a 5-iron of 39 1/2 inches

I haven't but have heard very good things and seen them while at the casino. Where are you coming from? Are you looking specifically for courses in that area or just upstate NY generally?Anybody ever play any of the Turning Stone in New York? Thinking about taking my Dad on a trip.

I'm looking for a place within 6 hours of driving distance from Rhode Island that I could take my dad away for 2 nights/3 days and play golf all 3 days.
Turningstone is running a few deals, and the casino fits in nicely for entertainment.
But if you have a better suggestion I am all ears.

I'll ask my uncle about the courses because he has played all of them (3 I think?). I'm not sure what you were looking to spend bc they are different qualities for different money. A sweet idea Is Saratoga during track season. Saratoga National is awesome but pretty expensive during track season. The Spa course isn't nearly as swanky but is surrounded by the nice spa park and is around 40 even at peak rates. Rooms go way up during track season but are probably a similar price to turning stone rooms. I find the track a lot more entertaining than the casino over multiple days. If youre not concerned about gambling you could go in june or early july before the track starts as prices are more reasonable across the board. The restaurants are better in Saratoga than turning stone//Syracuse.Kinda.

Look into which hotels and courses you get for that price. The hotel connected to the casino is aging, but the tower is rather nice and the lodge is high class. I'll ask about the courses tomorrowTurning Stone has a deal right now for around $600 a person. Its 2 nights/3 days at their hotel (or tower) and it includes 3 rounds of golf. Thats a pretty good deal if the courses are quality tracks.

My bad, I thought your post meant that you were going, re-reading it I realize that you were telling him to go there. As he said, I just being a wise-ass, we played Shadowmoss at the last minute on a Friday morning, it was actually a lot of fun and cheap despite being in a bind, but I doubt it would compare to Wild Dunes. They had a tournament going on the weekend we were there, hence why didn't play at Wild Dunes.Won't be down there again until next year, but since the experience at Wild Dunes has driven us to consider switching our annual trip from Hilton Head to Charleston, I ask if you have played Wild Dunes before and the pimping of Shadowmoss is in comparison, or you simply really like that course? We will be looking for 5-6 solid courses for our week next year and I'd like to get some details on why you like Shadowmoss so much, especially if it's in comparison to Wild Dunes.
Thanks/.
Isle of Palms was pretty awesome. The wedding was pretty lame, though.

I'm just hooking, pulling and otherwise yanking the ball dead left off the tee. People who I'm playing with are telling me I'm not turning my body, yada, yada, but I've always had an ugly swing that I've fought through, including a pronounced dip, with my driver. I feel like I'm getting the club head through my back swing in a normal position, but I'm just completely losing any control of it immediately at the point of impact. When I move the ball back in my stance, I'm still hooking it, but the ball is starting further right so at times, it hooks into the fairway and other times, not so much. I'm a fucking mess and I have to figure out a way out of it before my member guest this weekend and the three day next weekend. I really need to buy a new driver, but my swing is so bad right now that I don't even want to think about getting fitted based on the numbers the machine will spit out.

If you had 1 day in the Palm Springs area to golf, where would it be? I've played The Stadium Course at PGA West many years ago but no place else. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hands down, Desert Willow.

I have played both twice. Firecliff ate me up both times. That's the tougher one. They are both great. It really is a well run place. Have fun.

I consider it my home course, but there's been a big price increase (understandably) over the last five years or so, so I only play it once or twice per season.
But fuck, are 17 and 18 ever good finishing holes.
