Talked to someone who knows a VCU assistant. Illinois has offered something like 6/$18 for Smart, his wife wants to go, Smart doesn't. Should be interesting.
Definitely. It's rare when you have a situation like Mark Few at Gonzaga, staying for so long. Brad Stevens has also turned down several opportunities to leave Butler.

Heard that Smart wants to make sure he has a handle on the Chicago recruiting scene before jumping.
To my mind, he's gotta go. Strike while iron is hot. He returns to VCU, a kid he's counting on gets injured and he goes 17-14 and no one is looking at him.

If he leaves, VCU will most likely fall back into obscurity and take heavy recruiting losses.

Mike Davis fired by UAB.
http://espn.go.com/m...oach-mike-davis
In a statement Davis said: "I respect their decision and really appreciate the opportunity to be the head men's basketball coach at UAB."
Davis was far more defiant on March 7 when asked about his job security. He remained on the bench after enduring the death of his mother in October and lost two cousins over the summer.
"For someone to speculate on that is an insult to me as a coach," Davis told The Birmingham News. "My body of work speaks for itself. I would think. No one could have gone through what I've gone through the way I've stood up."
Davis led the Blazers to the NIT three times and took them to the NCAA tournament for the first time during the 2010-11 season. They also claimed their first C-USA regular season title. It earned the former Indiana coach league coach of the year honors, but no raise or contract extension.
What an absolutely ridiculous decision. Brian Mackin is a fucking grade-A moron. There's no other explanation.

http://www.suntimes....YdIY6Gc.twitterShaka Smart has told Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas he’s not interested in becoming the Illini’s next basketball coach, multiple sources told the Sun-Times on Wednesday.
Smart, 34, is believed to have turned down an offer of at least $2.5 million a year to succeed Bruce Weber, who was fired after nine years in Champaign. Smart will remain at Virginia Commonwealth.

He's just waiting for Rick Barnes to quit so Texas can make him the highest-paid coach in the NCAA.Shaka Smart has told Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas he’s not interested in becoming the Illini’s next basketball coach, multiple sources told the Sun-Times on Wednesday.

As an Ohio grad, it'd be a real shame to lose him right after our run this year, especially with everybody coming back. But he makes 250k at OU, and Illinois can offer up to 2 million. It'd be hard to blame him for leaving.
That said, seems like nobody wants that job. And given Groce's ties to the Big Ten and Illinois' other top choice Brad Stevens, maybe he says no thanks, tries to make one more run at Ohio with everybody coming back, and then leaves next year.

It sounds like John Groce is now the top choice at Illinois.

A friend of mine is a D-1 head coach, and he says that Illinois is a well known "cheat" job, and that Shaka, among others, was not comfortable going in there knowing they were expected to cheat.

Not a change, but Bruiser Flint got a well-deserved multi-year extension from Drexel. No word on dollars or length.

Dog- It's been 16 years (1996) since the Minutemen were in the Final Four....talk about getting old!

Very interesting. It sounds like they're close on Groce, but at this point, I'm not sure he should say yes. Nobody seems pleased with him as the choice, and last night somebody in Chicago already purchased firejohngroce.com. Illini fans are fixated on his 34-30 record in MAC conference play, which I think does a bit of a disservice to how difficult a conference the MAC is. They're also irrationally worried that he wont be able to recruit Chicago even though he's the guy that got Evan Turner to OSU, got DJ Cooper to choose Ohio over Baylor, and recruited other Midwestern kids like Greg Oden and Mike Conley to Ohio State.
I hope they scare him away and end up with their 8th choice, but that's a lot of money for Groce to turn down so I won't blame him if he does. Hopefully Ohio will just grab Jeff Boals to replace him and we'll pick up where we left off this year.

K-State hires Bruce Weber, Doug couldn't even get an interview. Doug should probably set his sights a little lower if he really wants to be a coach. His father and brother are both respected coaches, and Doug has a great mind for the game, but Big 12 isn't a place to start your coaching career. WCC or WAC would be more realistic.Doug Gottlieb wants the KSU job. The jokes, they write themselves

Seriously, the guy is fucking delusional. The pathetic attempt at rationalizing/even mentioning his previous jobs are the rantings of a man with completely no self-awareness. I hope the Knicks rehire him for all of his basketball "prowess".FIU fires Isiah Thomas. Shocked, I know.

They must have better coeds.Larry Eustachy to Colorado State. Mountain West may be a slightly better league but seems like a lateral move for him.
