Jeter grounded into 10 DPs last season, his lowest total ever in a season with 500+ AB. Gardner hitting in front is an obvious indicator, though Jeter had more DPs in '10(22) than last year, and Gardner got on base more in '10. What's different?

Heh, my first thought is that he spent half a season making such poor contact that it's hard to turn DPs on 50 foot dribblers. :)

This game is on MLBN, although I guess I should have said that earlier. Phelps and Banuelos each pitched two scoreless innings behind Nova, Betances is in now.

Yankees-Phillies on MLB.tv again today. Looks like Girardi is doing his alternating starting OF and starting IF every other day thing again. I seem to recall him doing that last year for ST games too.

Pineda going 2 innings or 35 pitches today, I wish they had a speed gun on these telecasts.

I noticed yesterday that NESN had the gun, but I hadn't seen it on the Yankees games. I think NESN is about the only broadcast that uses it for ST, which kinda sucks, especially when you're trying to see how guys are coming along in terms of readiness for the season. I know MASN didn't have it for the Nats game when I was watching Strasburg yesterday either.

God it is miserable seeing Pineda pitch for NY.

No idea about the gun, but the parks in Arizona all have PitchFX. Jet Blue just had an old fashioned gun behind the plate.

Do the Arizona parks have PFX because of AFL, or was it just installed for ST purposes?

You'd think that especially with the new park, the Red Sox would add it at some point.

Pretty sure for AFL purposes. You would think that the Sox would be willing to pay to have it installed for rehab and prospect purposes, but I have no idea what MLB demands for it.

If he doesn't stick, would Cabral still be returned to the Sox? I'd assume the same rule applies for guys who are rule-5 drafted then traded. Not that it's vitally important, he gave up really solid contact to all three lefties he just faced and I don't think he missed any bats.

There should be 4 errors on that play. Error by Brown to not catch it, error by Gillies to not field the hop cleanly, error on the throw, and an error by the guy backing up the throw. Jesus.

I can't find the confirmation of this online, but I believe that since this is Cabral's second time being picked in the rule-5, he doesn't get offered back to Boston unless he wants to be, and he is allowed to be sent to NY's AAA team (maybe he has to clear waivers first?). Would appreciate a link on this if anyone has one...

Just found this post by amfox1 on soxprospects from when Cabral was taken:

Just to reiterate, because Cabral was selected under Rule 5 last year, he can elect free agency if he clears waivers and does not need to be offered back to Boston.

Loved what I saw from Pineda today his pitches looked really crisp for so early on.

I also am really loving Zolio Almonte's bat. Kid looks like a hitter up there.

I'm not sure hitting 93 once or twice proves all is well with a guy whose 4-seamer averaged 95.4 MPH last year and topped out at ~99 MPH. I'm not saying he's completely fucked or anything, but I really don't think he's shown that he's the same guy just yet.

Any money he is simply ramping it up as he goes along. I wouldn't be surprised if he hits 94 or 95 next time out.

In other news, Cesar Cabral had what looked like another solid outing today. I'd really like to see an article handicapping the back of the bullpen candidates, I have been waiting for RAB to do one but no luck yet.

Was at the park today, and was happy to get a look at Gary Sanchez. After watching at his work behind the plate for a few innings, I have a lot more faith that he'll be a catcher in the end than I had about Montero. His problems seem more bad habits/inexperience than agility or quickness. And he roped a pretty strong single to boot.

There were many more pitches at 93 than one or two. And a marked improvement over his first start. I think speculation that he is in some way affected right now requires more evidence than those who simply lack concerns over his fist two spring appearances.

Weiland in 4 IP vs. Yankees: 0 hits, 1 BB, 1 HBP and 1 K. 9 ground ball outs. #RedSox could have used that in September.

Pineda's fastball seems mostly around 90-91 on the NASN gun today. He hit 95 once, I think, but he's mostly at 90-91 still. In the 4th he's had some even down at 88-89.
