Back in October,

Red Sox

owner John Henry

told 98.5 The Sports Hub he opposed the Carl Crawford signing

.

On Saturday, he apologized to his left-fielder.

Henry and Crawford met for about 10 minutes Saturday afternoon during the team’s first full squad workout. Henry told WBZ-TV’s Dan Roche he apologized, and Crawford accepted.

Earlier in the day, Henry told the media he regretted making the comments this fall.

“I should have never made those comments. It was an off-the-cuff remark that I shouldn’t have made, so when I see him I’m going to apologize to him for it,” Henry told reporters Saturday morning.

Good. Why'd he wait until now to do so?

Probably because doing it in person would have been more effective and less awkward than a phone call and flying to meet Crawford for just that wasn't' warranted in Henry's view. No big deal.

Yes, but I think SJH is thinking (as do I), weren't they in the same area at all last season?

It was stupid for Henry to have said that publicly, but I'm glad he's reached out to Crawford and apologized. Hopefully, Crawford accepts it and moves on. I'm expecting big things from him this season. He has nowhere to go but up and I'm still not as down as most on this signing. It was an overpay, but not as bad as last year's numbers made it look.

Would it really be that surprising if it hadn't even occurred to Henry that what he'd said might upset Crawford until Crawford talked about it?

So he could do it without saying "thank you for proving me right".

What I'm baffled by is Henry's failure to clarify the remarks within the first few days after he made them. All he had to do was to say publicly that his point was that he leaves baseball decisions, even decisions of the highest order to his baseball people. It's a matter of organizational practice to and the Crawford one was an illustration of that. He didn't mean it as a slight on Crawford as a player and certainly not as a person. He remains persuaded by their confidence in his ability to play a prominent role on a winning club. Etc,, etc.

Or is it that the press just never covered it? Can he really be that tone deaf?

...Still a good thing he saw fit to do it in person. Better genuine and late than swift but forced.

edit - gibberish.

If it doesn't fit in a box score, I don't give a shit. I am so over this crap.

Since he only said it a month or so ago, apologizing when they were in the same place last season would have been odd.

Although I often apologize to my wife in the morning for things I'll be doing later that day, so you do have that tack.

I don't think Henry is that clueless, but I do suspect that he didn't realize how much his comments pissed off Crawford until he read about it recently.

It may also be that we're misreading Henry, and instead of being the out-of-touch hedge fund genius he appears, he's really a Machiavellian managerial wizard and his comments were an attempt to light a fire under Crawford.
