Spring Training Report 2/24
Posted 25 February 2012 - 08:23 AM
90 degrees and sunny.
It was a quiet morning at the Player Development Complex. Position players were taking physicals so the workouts involved only pitchers/catchers and a few minor league hitters.
After SSSS on the "agility" field, the pitchers/catchers split into groups and spread out over five fields. Each
group was led by a SP and included 5 relievers, many of whom will be headed to the minors. We watched the Beckett and Lester groups. Lester's group included the first sighting of Chris Carpenter. There's nothing really to tell about him at this point, as he was only involved in PFP.
One of my "spies" informed me that later in the morning, Beckett was going to throw live BP for the first time this spring on Field 3 so we planted our butts between Field 3 & 6 (separated only by a walkway) to watch PFP.
We waited quiet a while for Beckett to conclude his workouts and as my "spy" came through: Beckett appeared on Field 3 with Lavarnway.
The cool moment of the day was Zach Kapstein (RI native and nephew of Jerry Kapstein) stepping in to face Beckett. The kid hit a line drive in his first AB. Murmurs in the crowd that Beckett was going to brush him back the next time. Kid came around again and to the shock of nobody, Beckett went high and inside. This time, the kid took him deep. Beckett was probably going to hit the kid the next time around. The chance never came, as Beckett was gone after approximately 30 pitches.
Today is a huge day: First full squad workout followed by the grand opening of JetBlue Park, followed by an Open House for fans.
People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." -- Rogers Hornsby
