Dan Shaughnessy can't wait for the old leaks superhighway, straight from Lucchino to him via the dentist, to re-open.

Does this absolutely confirm that he was ditched at Theo's behest or what?

You aren't looking forward to the Boston Police Department Band dressed as the Royal Rooters

Perhaps along the route staffers can dress in period clothing, follow the band and hand out 10% off coupons for all 100th Anniversary merchandise.

The is the cherry on the shit sundae that was this offseason.

The next logical step is to sign Mike Lansing to play second and trade Pedroia for Jeremy Guthrie and a field tarp.

I am really beginning to loathe this ownership group. They've done everything wrong since the end of last season.

Disgrace to my profession. Couldn't he be a proctologist instead? Would be more appropriate.

They are obviously hoping this attracts more of the "non-hardcore" fans (instead of the regular term that is used) to keep the sellout streak going, given how the season ended (along with the off season) and turned off a lot of Sox fans.

Papelbon leaving stung.
Tito and Theo saying good bye stunk.
Nick Punto: Starting Shortstop is going to be a daily suckfest of Grebeckian performances.

But this news is the worst of all. The hokiest, most tone-deaf charlatan to call Lansdowne Street home is back for the attack. Today, my friends, is the nadir. We have hit the bottom.

I am hoping things will now get better, because they can't get any fucking worse.

 And what, exactly, has Steinberg ever done that struck anyone here as "tasteful"? The man is a ham-handed hack. That's the main reason so many of us were happy to see him leave and are aghast he's been brought back.

I certainly understand the need for ballpark promotions and PR. But Steinberg's efforts in that area here were not encouraging, to say the least.

I wasn't saying that it would be. But maybe (and hopefully) cooler heads of management will prevail.

We survived the first time, people should probably relax. But that wouldn't be SoSH.

This just IN !!!!!!!!!!

"Dr. Charles Steinberg has just instituted his first fan appreciation day giveaway.... It will be called Free-Unicorn's that Shit Money Day and it is in honor of the Red Sox straddling the Luxury tax Threshhold. The first 10,000 fans will take home a beautiful purple Unicorn that actually Deficates Cash Money on demand!"

Ohh and Terry Cashman will be doing "talkin' Baseball (Red Sox reprise)" during a 7th inning Bud Light and Popeyes give away in the players clubhouse.

I think Bobby V. actually leaked this story to the press.

The Red Sox clearly would have won more than two titles during Steinberg's tenure if he wasn't distracting us all with silly and tasteless PR.

Yep, the dentist provides ample justification for the collective SoSH panty knot.

not that Nomar's number should be off the market, but there's a certain irony in the whole, searching for a SS since Nomar situation, finally having a reliable one in Scutaro, salary-dumping him and being back to square one.

And how many they've won in the past 90 years without him?

Can't believe folks are getting this worked up about this. If you don't like Terry Cashman, don't watch those parts.

The other shit (Punto, etc)? Yeah, get pissed. But this is all about making money so they can continue to improve the Fenway experience and pay for decent players (hopefully).

I spot a logical fallacy at work here.

Steinberg had nothing to do with the World Series titles whatsoever, unless he was the guy who convinced Theo to trade Nomar.

Causation, yadda yadda?

And that's different from all the bitching about how he ruins the franchise?

This is tiny stuff. Has nothing to do with the product on the field. Unless that other stuff is more important to you? Which I'm ok with if you're ok with.

I think the point that Lose is making, and that I was making less directly above, is that the guy has nothing to do with winning and losing. As a result, it's hard for some of us to understand the level of vitrol and angst being expressed here. I agree that some of his stuff is corny and over the stop, and that Cashman song was indeed awful. But for me at least, that the Sox will likely have Nick Punto or Mike Aviles at short on opening day is infinitely more worrisome and annoying than what number Punto will be wearing or how the Fenway 100 is celebrated.

If he really was a big source of leaked information, that could have an impact on the front office's ability to conduct its business which actually could impact winning and losing. He's not a key component in roster construction by any means, but to suggest he can't impact winning and losing is a bit short sighted, IMO.

You're right, the Dentist does have nothing to do with wins or losses, but he does have something to do with the over-all feel of being at the park. And after a Charles Steinberg presentation, I've feel like I've been dipped in beer-battered, flash-fried and then doused in Velveeta.

Basically, the human equivalent of this:

I find Steinberg to be tacky in the things he attaches himself to publically; hence my prior dig at the awful Terry Cashman song.

That said, and on the subject of whether he impacts the overall product on the field, he was clearly a part of a spectacularly successful business side of the house. Fact is, anyone who doesn't think the success of the business side of the house in driving up revenues helped the team on the field win in 2004 and 2007 simply doesn't understand sports economics well enough to comment on the subject, imo.

We can certainly debate how important he was to raising those revenues---and I am sure many here will say 'little if at all' and that may well be correct. However, that is a discussion that has to happen with 1) an acknowledgement that most everyone on this board is just guessing about what value he brought or didn't bring on the business side and 2) clear recognition that this ownership team has, over a ten-year period, been spectacularly successful at both the business and baseball sides overall.

To get a little more granular, the way the team has been branded the past 10 years is not the same as it was before, and the fan experience in the ballpark is vastly improved. The way the team markets itself, and engages the corporate sponsor market, are also very different. These pieces of the puzzle have been fit together very well overall, resulting in much better revenues (higher attendence, better sponsorship revenues, better TV ratings, higher ad revenue, etc) even if I personally think some of the "Selling Red Sox Nation turf" stuff is ridiculous. I just don't know whether The Dentist is purely a front-man for what others are doing behind-the-scenes or whether he was a part of the vision.

According to the conventional wisdom around here, the Red Sox FO managed to leak information just fine without Steinberg around when they dumped manure all over Francona.

Sure, Dr. Charles could influence their SmearGate policy, but I think the more likely read is that JWH and LL will leak material to the media if and when they want to, and the Dentist will not be the primary driver of those decisions or the primary means for achieving the objective. Alternatively, and more negatively, he already has done his damage by setting them on the course that they're on, and the recent hiring is just more of the same.
