He's 29 and missed most of last season with shoulder issues, pitching 7 games in the minors and making 9 starts for Pittsburgh, where he'd been pitching since arriving from the Yankees in the mid-2008 Marte/Nady trade. His control's been pretty decent, but last year batters just teed off on him (60 H and 9 HR in 38.2 IP). The Pirates released him in December.

They have also added Mauro Gomez, a power hitting 1st baseman from the Braves AAA Team..... He had 24 HR, 90RBI's a .552SLG and led the International League in total bases.

Seems like a decent move for DH/1B depth at Pawtucket and the guy is only 27 or so years old.
