The New England Patriots announced today that rookie DE Alex Silvestro has been signed to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. In addition, the Patriots released WR Tiquan Underwood.

Released a day before the SB? Holy shit, that has to sting.

Wait until his wife tries to get tickets at the players' entrance

It would have sucked if he was waived the day before the Ravens game. He is basically inactive, but without being able to stand on the sidelines (unless they get him a pass). I'll be surprised if he is surprised about this move.

Not that it hasn't happened but I sure don't remember something like this so close to the game unless it is injury related??

Something up on the defensive line?

In practical terms, it's really no different than if he was inactive. He'll still get a ring if they win, he'll be watching the game (I have to assume), and the Pats are a bit thin at the DE/pass rush spot.

But man, kick in the nuts is an understatement. Going from in a uniform on the sidelines during the Super Bowl to not even being on the team? Ouch.

I think they are concerned about not having enough depth at DE - they're playing indoors, and some guys could be sucking air by the 4th quarter.

The point E5 made about Gronk is good too.

Makes sense, except they seem to have extra DLs as it stands, with Vince, Love, Anderson, Warren, Deadrick, Ellis, and Brace. Seemms unlikely all 7 would be active - unless they've got two guys down (or maybe just Anderson, who'd be the closest to Silvestro in body type), it doesn't make sense that they'd be adding AS to the game-day roster.

If the Patriots lose because of a critical error by Ocho, we'll never hear the end of it.

They only have a few guys who are pure ends (Anderson, Ninkovich, Ellis).

In any case, this really isn't an important move - chances are Silvestro never sees the field.

Did Tiquan break curfew last night? Will they actually dress Silverstro?

Obviously they're not going to cut Slater (ST) and Edelman (DB), but this still seems strange.

Last time, Andre Carter was the key man getting pressure on the QB. The DL we have, except for Anderson, seem better at clogging up space than getting to the QB. I haven't seen Silvestro play, but if he is more of a pass rusher, it makes sense considering Nink and Anderson are the only two who seem to get consistent pressure.

Ian R. Rapoport @RapSheet

I am told there was no disciplinary reasons for WR Tiquan Underwood's release. Just a move to get another DL on the roster for rotation?

He isn't going to see that many snaps. Maybe his best game of the season. I honestly don't want the pats to try to get cute. Stick with the guys who have produced all year.

Is this kid really going to play? How many times has someone been signed off the practice squad to play in the Super Bowl? Unless this kid is Bill's secret weapon this doesn't mean anything. Underwood was going to be inactive anyway, he wasn't playing over Ocho. Maybe this is what Glazer was talking about.

If he was going to be inactive, what is the distinction? Why not just leave him as inactive rather than cut him?

To get a player on the roster that could actually see the field. They aren't cutting Mallet, Vereen, ect. to do so.

This pretty much guarantees there's a surprise inactive, right? Unless someone on the DL is a gametime decision, I can't see any scenario where Silvestro sits. Confusing.

Well, he only had 2 playoff games prior to this year, so it won't take much. His best was 4 catches for 59 yards.

So, if the Pats could hire Josh McDaniels, can the Giants sign Tiquan Underwood?

He follows it up with:

Okay, so if the Giants can't sign Underwood - maybe Victor Cruz needs a personal Receivers Coach? I'm serious. That would be amazing.

Are there rules preventing them from inviting him to be on the sideline with them? Like a "You're going to be inactive anyways, we'll cut you for the roster spot but you'll essentially be in the same scenario you would've been in anyways minus getting your name on the t-shirt if we win" type deal?

Of course, the reality is that it's a business and this was a move that BB viewed as better for the team. But it would be kinda nice if TU isn't getting totally left in the cold here.

I'm assuming there is a waiver period that will end after the Super Bowl.

Since Underwood has less than 4 years experience, he has to go through waivers, which would expire post kickoff.

Even if it weren't the case, there's a good chance that Belichick snuck into his room last night to insert a micro spy cam within his high top fade in the event he did sign with the Giants.

The waivers/Giants claim thing explains why Belichick waited on this one. I'm guessing he talked to Tiquan about this a little while ago and had the decision made. It would go a long way to explain why he waited so long.

I don't think he talked to him about it, just looking at his twitter feed.
