FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski appeared to suffer a left ankle injury late in the third quarter of Sunday's AFC Championship game against the Baltimore Ravens.
Gronkowski hauled in a 23-yard reception, but Ravens safety Bernard Pollard -- the same Pollard whose low tackle caused Patriots quarterback Tom Brady to tear his ACL in the 2008 season-opener against the Chiefs and was in the vicinity when Wes Welker tore his ACL in the 2009 regular-season finale against the Texans -- came down on top of him making the tackle and Gronkowski's left ankle bent at an odd angle.
Gronkowski got to his feet, but hobbled badly trying to get off the field. He needed help from trainers and departed for the locker room.
[Update: Gronkowski returned to the field with 12:19 to play in the fourth quarter.]
Per ESPN.

Good to hear - but man, the angle and replay did not look good.He jogged up the tunnel and came back into the game...gotta think he'll be fine.
He is made of adamantium.

Adreneline probably helps.
I still think worst case he tapes it up tightly and shoots it up and plays.

Gronkowski’s injury a subplot: Tight end Rob Gronkowski needed help coming off the field in the third quarter with what looked like a serious left ankle injury. Safety Bernard Pollard, who Patriots fans know too well from his involvement in plays in which Tom Brady and Wes Welkertore ACLs, was in on the tackle. In a surprising turn, Gronkowski returned to the field early in the fourth quarter and the Gillette Stadium crowd erupted. Gronkowski has become a cult hero here in New England, especially with his trademark “boom” spikes after touchdowns, and this should only endear him more to Patriots fans.

Even with Gronk, we have our hands more than full with New York, thus it is obviously crucial that he's effective in Indy. This will likely be one of the main media storylines for the next 2 weeks.

I thought it was broken for sure.

Actually, on the way to the locker room, Gronk grabbed some security guy, ripped off his ankle, then attached it to his leg.

Gronk would never use a fragile human ankle, I think it was one of the struts holding up the end zone Lighthouse.

On the CSN Sports Sunday show, they had footage of Gronkowski in a walking boot after the celebrations died down. No screen cap. He was walking with a slight limp, but not too gimpy. Even with Gronk, we have our hands more than full with New York, thus it is obviously crucial that he's effective in Indy. This will likely be one of the main media storylines for the next 2 weeks.
They need to do that, it needs to be compressed tight tonight and he should be fine. Ask Al Jefferson, he took his boot off to sleep after a Celtics game once and his ankle became fucked.

Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski left the locker room feeling optimistic after his team defeated the Ravens 23-20 yesterday to land in Super Bowl XLVI against the Giants. With good reason.
A source told me this morning that Gronkowski’s left ankle, which he injured on a 23-yard catch in the third quarter, won’t prevent him from participating in the game in Indianapolis in two weeks. The source with direct knowledge of Gronkowski’s condition said simply, “He’ll be ready to go.”

I hope that two more weeks off will help Gronk and Vollmer be fully healthy.
I think Gronk will be out there no matter what, just a matter of how healthy he is.
A healthy Vollmer would be huge against the ferocious Giants pass rush. I can only imagine he hasn't been IRed because there is at least a chance he plays.

Don't forget he ripped off Law Firm's helmet earlier in the game too. Fuck that guy. He should be a Steeler.

I was watching the game with my brother who is a physical therapist and he is usually dead on when calling an injury that he sees on TV, he was convinced upon seeing the replay that Gronk tore his ACL until he saw him trotting up the ramp.I thought it was broken for sure.

Pretty sure that wasn't him, but Ellerbe. Also, he was near Welker, but never touched him on that play.

Pollard is gonna switch to offensive line and chop block Wilfork next.
Man I hate that guy.
To be honest, I thought Pats should have signed him. He's better than Ihedigbo by a long shot (although he might have knocked out several teammates during practice drills.)

That surely allows Patriots fans, coaches and players a sigh of relief. Gronkowski described his ankle as “fine” in the locker room after the game, but he didn’t go into detail. In fact, the precise injury is not clear. But the source believed — as of this morning — that it is clear Gronk will play. Barring a set-back or something unforeseen, this is good news. Gronkowski wore a walking boot following the game, and had tests done immediately afterward. He had five catches for 87 yards against the Ravens, but none after the injury. For the season, Gronkowski had 90 catches for 1,327 yards with 17 TDs in the best season for a tight end in NFL history.

I wonder who is the primary source of the "some ligament damage" confirmation. Seems like that is pretty specific information that BB would not authorize for public release. Do we usually get such specific information on guys who are injured but are expected to play? Is there a leak in the organization? What am I missing?
Rap replied to someone by saying: "A sprain is simply tearing of ligaments."
I think he is just using the definition to make people point to his twitter account.

BB disinformation strategy. Gronk is actually fine but Bill is making him wear a boot to keep the media focused there. It's so awesome to have a coach who views every season as a battle campaign.

Pollard was asked his thoughts on being called a "Patriots killer" for being involved in plays that injured quarterback Tom Brady, receiver Wes Welker and tight end Rob Gronkowski.
"That's fine and dandy. It's part of the game," he said. "If you don't like it, so what? ..."

1. No way Pollard tried to injure him. Pollard grabbed Gronk by the shoulders from behind and Gronk carried him for a bit before Pollard decided to fall with all of his weight to bring him down. Gronk was just too strong for him and was in danger of breaking free for what probably would have been a TD. Pollard's face was buried in Gronk's side when he fell in his tackle attempt, it was merely unfortunate that Pollard landed on the back of Gronk's leg when it was in a vulnerable position.
2. Gronk got up pretty quickly, and while he was helped off the field, it didn't appear that he really needed any help (although he was clearly favoring his foot) and he walked very quickly to the locker room. Like he was running late to a meeting or something.
3. Gronk returned to the game pretty quickly as well (within about 4 minutes of game time; with the break between quarters and the review of the Brady second run that was called a TD on the field but reversed after review, this was perhaps about 10-12 minutes of real time).

After reading some of the Giants comments about targeting Kyle Williams last Sunday, I won't be surprised when one of their lineman "trips" and accidently falls on Gronk's ankle after the whistle.
Dude you are paranoid. Why would you think the Giants would do something so classless?
