Can't confirm if he's died yet, but if not it is imminent.

His family is making an announcement in the next hour or so, no specific time yet. Friend works at OnwardState (site's crashed) told me this. Will get links when "public."

We are working to get the site online ASAP. We have reported that Joe Paterno was taken off of a respirator this morning. (1/2)

The info, which comes from team source, meshes with forum post by BWI's Tom McAndrew that Paterno's extended family has been summoned. (2/2)

Sally Jenkins said she had the definite sense that Joe knew her interview would be the last one. Correct me, but it seems there was no indication he was this close to death or even terminal.

Knowing how this story has gone, it wouldn't surprise me if Paterno was intentionally poisoned to aid in the cover up somehow.

Cue speculation as to the extent the scandal and termination hastened his death. Bear Bryant lasted about a month, Paterno not quite three.

Sandusky should be following him there shortly. No way that guy lasts a month in prison.

I don't believe LHO acted alone -- but dude, he's an 85 yr-old with lung cancer.

What you're likely to hear out of some quarters of Happy Valley is "They broke Joe's heart and killed him." Or, at least, "They prejudged him and made his final days miserable."

I just hope there is not blowback on BOB.

The ESPN article says he's in serious condition. Doesn't say anything about life support. This still sucks regardless.

Normal people aren't sad when a guy who allowed child rape to be swept under the rug dies. Speaking of karma, don't you think THIS is karma?

Back to JoePa, it's only a matter of time before the moronic alums blame the BoT for his death, whenever that occurs.

Rather than spending my night individually responding to the uproar of people equating an 85 year old football coach with lung cancer to a man who single handedly led the genocide of thousands of innocent people, I'm going to go out and enjoy my Saturday night and pray for the well being of him and all those suffering from illness and poor health.

Good night :)

Well, I knew Joe in the 1970s when he was in the prime of his life. It was hard to compare him to the guy who coached those last 10 years at Penn State. In his prime, Joe was an incredibly curious human being who relied on a great staff inherited from Rip Engle to help build powerhouse football teams that played "soft" schedules against fading Eastern football powers like Syracuse, Army and Pittsburgh. He made the program national and won a couple national titles in the 1980s. Should have quit in the early 1990s when he hit 65 but never could leave the program that became his life.

I'm going to remember Joe as the guy from those younger days. The sad part of life is if you hang on long enough, the end game is usually not a pretty one. Still, nobody who knew Joe thought his career and his life would end in this kind of scandal. Joe lost sight of the detail work that made him such a great coach. If he had paid attention to the details, he would have fired Sandusky in 1998, no questions asked.

I understand the back-and-forth on this thread about Joe. It's indicative of the anger people have that a supposedly great man could be so ignorant about sexual perversion. But that's the thing about Joe. He wasn't really worldly back in the 1970s. He was a football coach who buried himself in game plans and program details. There's a danger in that for coaches. Usually the wife walks away, as happened with Parcells and maybe even Belichick.
Football coaches are a strange breed.

I am sad tonight that Joe is dying. Sad for the Joe I knew, not the guy from the last 10 years.

You say that like it hasn't already been done. I've seen the BoT, McQueary, Media, and even BOB by one guy blamed for this.

Get over yourself. Even if you don't agree with it, the man was part of a very recent and reprehensible cover up of an atrocity. Sympathy will be limited for many, and I'm being kind with that.

I'm disappointed this is happening on multiple levels. Firstly, I don't think he's an inherently evil person (I think he was a coward of monstrous proportion though), so there's a level of sympathy. Don't like seeing people dying. 2) That he'll never see the stand again is also disappointing.
