glad we didn't give him that massive contract...still think Crawford was a horrendous signing?

Alex Avila can probably suffice with a very low cost backup. While Victor didn't catch much last year, perhaps we can use this as a potential trade destination for Salty.

The Tigers are expected to gain a good amount of money with insurance on Martinez's contract, which could give them more flexibility in taking on a big salary.

I'm not going to try to document every instance, but— anecdotally— it feels like the Sox have been involved in an AWFUL lot of these 'damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't' personnel decisions over the past several years, where hindsight reveals that it was in fact the right move to cut a guy loose but then the guy we get with the leftover money/assets ALSO turns out to be hurt or ineffective. The big post-2004 moves (Damon/Crisp, OCab/Renteria, Pedro/Clement + Wells) set the template for this, but then it's kept chugging right along with Nixon/Drew (to some extent), Renteria/Lugo, Bay/Cameron and so forth.

Sprowl; if you're out there...we need one more "Wiktor" picture in honor of a good guy who's done for the year.

DETROIT -- Tigers star Victor Martinez is now recovering from surgery on his left knee to repair an injury that is expected to keep him out of the 2012 lineup.
The team announced Monday that Martinez had microfracture surgery on Friday, as well as repairs to the medial and lateral meniscus. He is projected to have ACL reconstruction surgery on the same knee in six to eight weeks.

Wow. That's a much bigger deal than ACL surgery. Have to question whether he can really ever catch again.

I thought the exact same thing after I read the espn piece. Hard for me to believe he ever does much catching in the future.
