Here's hoping Marchand gives Obama the "you gotta big dome, eh?" treatment. Assuming he even gets clearance from the Secret Service.

link

President Obama will welcome the 2011 Stanley Cup Champions to the White House on Monday, January 23. The Bruins will be in the nations capital to take on the Washington Capitals the following night.

The Bruins won their sixth Stanley Cup in franchise history last season, beating the Vancouver Canucks in seven games.

This will be the first Boston team President Obama has hosted. President Bush was still in office when the Celtics visited the White House after their NBA Championship in 2008.

President Obama will highlight the Boston Bruins Foundation, which has raised and donated more than $7 million to various charitable organizations in the six New England states.

Damn - I got to go to both the Red Sox ceremonies when Bush was still there, since I had a couple sources in the building who got me tix, but they are long gone now, so unlikely to see this one....

Hopefully this visit will produce a lasting funny moment, like ones that preceded it:

Obama just called Marchand "The Little Ball of Hate" and then turned and asked, "What's up with that nickname, man?"

EDIT: Kaberle front and center in an awful looking pinstripe suit. WTF?

Bruins' Tim Thomas is not at the White House today. He and Kampfer only Americans on Cup team.

HackswithHaggs

Not sure I saw Tim Thomas up there on the stage with President Obama and the rest of his Boston Bruins teammates. He is a staunch Republican

Thomas has "Don't Tread On Me," the slogan adopted by the Tea Partiers, on his mask. I'm not shocked he refused to go. Petty of him, really.

This is why we can't have nice things. Some moderate one-liners, though.

@nhlrulebook: "Tim Thomas refuses to show up at White House because he doesn’t like Obama. Related: Canucks make trillion dollar contract offer to Obama."
@TimmySaves: "Boycotting today's White House appearance. Timmy was told there would be interns. Timmy was lied to."

Well I would think the Bruins would have to submit a list of attendees to the Secret Service well in advance of their visit. So the B's probably knew. They could've just said Thomas has personal matters to attend to and then left it at that, instead of the invitable firestorm.

Either way, shitty on Thomas' part. Once in a lifetime opportunity to meet POTUS. Just suck it up for the 2 minute ceremony.

Edit: I guess the B's confirmed that Thomas made the decision this morning. He'll release a statement shortly.

Kind of shitty that it's turned all the focus on Thomas and his politics, but I presume he knew full well that would happen. Seriously, is it that big a deal? Meeting the guy doesn't raise your taxes any further, sport.

My thing with Thomas' no-show is that it's upstaging the team on a day, probably the last such day, to celebrate your collective achievement over a political stance. Of the other 25 guys in that room, I'm sure there's one or two that muttered, "John McCain should be getting this jersey" under their breath, and yet they showed. Now we all get to wait with baited breath until later tonight when the slew of reporters with the Bruins give us his Facebook statement, which will no doubt be along the lines of "I could not in good conscience attend today's ceremony because of the actions of the 'president'" and blah blah blah. Suck it up for the half hour you're there, weep in front of the official portrait of Reagan, and go back to your hotel room for an extra-long shower. It's not like you're going there to cast your vote for the man.

This is an excellent point. The Bruins won the Cup as a team, ran 4 lines out there the whole playoffs AND Thomas played out of his mind. I would have thought the team would be together to accept the honor. Thomas, deliberately or not, is making today all about himself. That's selflish.

When asked about the Pistons' trip to the White House, Wallace said, "I ain't going to say (nothing) to him. I didn't vote for him. I'm not excited at all, it's just part of the thing."

As a fellow Catamount, I've always been a huge Timmy fan, but man, this kind of sucks. I was no fan whatsoever of George W. Bush, but the man was the President of the United States and deserving of the utmost respect. If I had ever or do ever get the chance to meet Bush, I'd shake his hand and say 'Thank you Mr. President'. Suck it up and don't be a show off. Show the office the respect it deserves.

I don't care who or what your political stance is; you get to meet the POTUS as a team then you show up.

It's all the more embarrassing he's one of the few US players on the team.

Start the kid - if nothing else then to make a statement about being a TEAM.
