I'll always be intrigued by a guy with a nearly 1/1 career K/BB split (232/244).

He logged 83.1 innings at 2B for the Mets last season

Emaus actually won the Mets 2B job out of spring training last season, but was eventually released. Heading into the 2011 season, J.P. Ricciardi, who drafted Emaus, had this to say at the time:

"He has hit," Ricciardi said. "Is he going to be Chase Utley? No. But is he capable of being an everyday, big-league player? I think he is in the right circumstance. Maybe this is it, maybe this isn't. He's a gap-to-gap hitter, everywhere he's been he's been a .270-.280 hitter and he's going to hit 15 balls in the seats once he plays regularly."

Taking over at second base for the New York Mets this year is Brad Emaus, a Rule 5 pick from the Toronto Blue Jays system. Drafted in the 11th round in 2007 from Tulane University, Emaus doesn't have exceptional tools or eye-catching athleticism, but is a "grinder," a player whose performance may exceed his natural "talent" due to his polish. He always showed excellent strike zone judgment in the Toronto system, drawing 212 walks against just 220 strikeouts in 1559 minor league at-bats. He also hit 15 homers and 32 doubles last year between Double-A and Triple-A, then won the Mets job with a .294/.400/.431 mark in spring training. His defense is considered average, but he hustles and has good instincts, and if he hits as expected, his glove is good enough for him to hold a job. Don't expect Emaus to set the league on fire, but he can hit .260 with a good OBP and the occasional home run.

I think if Youkilis or Pedroia got injured Eramus would be called up and probably start. If Scutaro gets hurt he would be up to.

If I remember correctly, Emaus was horrific defensively last year for the Mets. Maybe not by UZR or any other measure, but his inability to turn DPs, make simple throws and routine plays cost them plenty of runs and eventually led to his release.

Yeah, Speier tweeted his "questionable defense at 2B, 3B." With decent minor league hitting numbers and poor defense, it sounds like he's Cherington's Arquimedez Pozo.

Punto is not blocking anyone. He is the utility infielder. If there is an injury and they need a starter, he is only going to start if no one else is up to the challenge. Every roster needs a utility infielder.

Additionally, the Paw Sox had an opening at 2B that Emaus fills nicely. The Paw Sox infield is now Anderson, Emaus, Middlebrooks, Iglesias. Any of those guys could earn their way onto the Red Sox roster in the case of an injury. All of those guys need regular playing time to continue to develop. Aviles and Punto do not need regular playing time.

This was a good trade to add MLB-ready depth. But, the comparison to Drew Sutton is apt. This is another defensively challenged infielder with a good, but not exceptional, bat. Since I was sad to see Sutton go, I'm excited to have Emaus in the fold, but I would easily trade 5 Emaus' for one Punto.

This is a really interesting acquisition in light of the Scutaro trade, and makes me think that was their plan all along.

He's a 2B/3B, and trading our SS has affected our utility infielder depth if Aviles and/or Punto are being tapped to replace Scutaro.

He was released at some point because the mets just resigned him to a minor league deal. I have no clue what happened.

He was among the last round of minor league cuts just before the upper-level affiliates broke camp. Strong springs by Spears, Ciriaco & Thomas at AAA, plus the glut of middle infielders at AA (Gibson, Meneses, Dent, Hee) kind of sealed his fate.
