2012 NY Jets: O Tannenbaum, gone

"Otah was a massive talent, but has only played four games the last two seasons as he battled injury and conditioning issues. Many within the Panthers organization thought it was a lack of toughness, more than anything. They’ll move forward with former undrafted rookie Byron Bell at right tackle. Bell played acceptably well last year, subbing for Otah."
So I guess the idea of calling Otah a huge upgrade over Wayne hunter is kind of in the eye of the beholder. Granted, we all saw how poorly Hunter played last season, but I struggle to declare it an upgrade when the replacement is described with terms such as "conditioning issues", "lack of toughness", replaced with "an undrafted rookie".

They've handed Otah the job? Or is he slated to be a back-up or, at minimum, battle Hunter for the job? The Jets are thin at back-up lineman. Rich Cimini said today on Sirius XM that Hunter would be starting and the Jets would be looking to improve their reserves.Huge move. No more Wayne Hunter. Otah is a huge upgrade over him.

If Otah is healthy, he starts.

I agree - if healthy. The knee may or may not hold up for 16+, and if not, then it's back to Hunter, with the added bonus of Hunter being slightly miffed at being replaced.

The Jets might be further expanding Tim Tebow's role again, making him the most multi-tasking backup quarterback in the league.
According to Pro Football Talk, the Jets are considering using him on their kickoff team now in addition to the personal protector on their punt team, hoping to utilize his speed.
That’s the word from Jets assistant special teams coach Ben Kotwica, who told Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News that the team is considering using Tebow on their kickoff coverage team. Kotwica said that he’s not concerned about Tebow’s speed getting down the field or about his ability to make a tackle when he gets down there.
“When he’s in coverage, he’ll be looking to tackle the returner,” Kotwica said. “And from what I’ve seen, I’ve got a pretty high degree of confidence that he would be able to do that.”

It's fantastic. Opposing teams won't be trying to cream him or anything.
It's super unlikely that a fringe NFL special teamer trying to make a name for himself would try to smash the shit out of the golden boy press darling Heisman winning QB, right?

Might as well teach him the drop kick to really keep teams on their toes on 4th down in the red zone.I assume he'll be snapping and punting, as well.

"Huge move."
It is IF he can stay healthy. As much as I hate the Jets and love to bust on them, I can't blame them for taking a chance on Otah. When healthy, he's much better than Wayne Hunter.

http://profootballta...eek-to-pass-it/But a league source told PFT the trade was contingent on Otah passing his physical with the Jets in the next seven days, or else he goes back to Carolina. The Panthers sent him to the Jets for a conditional seventh-round pick, and then turned around and sent the same to the Raiders for wide receiver Louis Murphy.

I'm just messing with you. For a conditional 7th it's a steal, but the pick was undisclosed until now.

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Rex Ryan wants Santonio Holmes to catch passes, not to pass judgment on the team's plans for Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow.
The New York Jets' coach, commenting on Holmes' recent criticism of the two-quarterback system, responded with a mild rebuke.

The new OL coach was very outspoken this offseason with how much he loves Wayne Hunter (for whatever fucking reason. It was so emphatic, it was bizarre). The Otah move sort of surprised me but I'll wait to get excited about it untl he passes a physical and is actually playing in the pre-season.
Isn't the Otah trade currently on hold? Any news on that?

Honestly if they think he is close, I could see them having him "pass" the physical in Day 6 or 7. If he's in rough shape, we can all go out and buy Wayne Hunter jerseys. I am hoping (and expecting) Option A.

A.) Felt he was only worth a 7th round pick
and
B.) Could only get a 7th round pick for him
Then I have very little faith that this guy is anything close to the player he was in 2009. The fact that he already failed his physical on day 1 kind of reconfirms that for me. Even if the Jets "pass" him by the end of day 7, I think the valuation form his former team and the rest of the league is probably more accurate as to what he is now (scrub) then what he was in 2009.

To KFP's point: I think Otah is better then he is saying but he comes with a huge red flag. OL's often work as a total unit. When someone on the unit keeps missing huge chunks of time, they can't be cohesive. I think Otah is a nice player to have BUT if he keeps missing 3/4 of the season, he can fuck up the entire line. That's why he is only worth a 7th round pick. That and waiting until now to trade him. Most teams have the OL's pretty well set.

CORTLAND – Rex Ryan may have dialed down the public Super Bowl rhetoric, but he still has supreme confidence in himself.
“You know what? I look at myself as the best defensive coach in football,” Ryan said after the Jets’ first training camp practice on Friday. “That’s saying something because Dick LeBeau is pretty darn good. Bill Belichick is pretty good. But that’s the way I’ve always believed. And you know what? I believe it because (of) the guys I coach with, there’s no doubt about that. And the guys I’ve coached. But that’s the truth. That’s kind of how I feel.”
"If it was a spelling bee, I'd bet against me," he later added. "If it's anything else - a fight, coaching football - I'm betting on me."
Ryan has admitted that he will play a larger role with the defense than a year ago.

Is he saying that he thinks he's the best defensive coach because the guys he's coached with (i.e. his employees) and the guys he's coached (i.e. the players on his own team) tell him so? Bit of a biased sample, there, Rex.

I dunno man. If he still had the ability that he had a few years ago, I can think of a whole lot of teams that could use that talent at right tackle. I guess this is wait and see. Either way, certainly worth the risk of a 7th round pick.
Stop sucking up to the status quo, prom queen. Just tell Berry he's full of shit like the rest of us do.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, cornerback Antonio Cromartie will be playing receiver in multiple offensive packages.
The goal will be to turn him loose, stretching the field and keeping defenses intent on stuffing the “ground and pound” offense honest. It could also open up the underneath routes for receiver Santonio Holmes and tight end Dustin Keller.

Of course, if Tebow happens to be under center, with his precision, a go route might well become a crossing patternThere's a nasty part of me that would love to see him get lined up by a strong safety with rage in his eyes. Can't imagine that they'd ever run him on any sort of crossing route, though.

People seem to keep forgetting that Tebow actually does throw a good deep ball.

<< Don't bother.
Wait, why is Cromartie a better wide receiver than, well, an actual wide receiver?
Because the cap mismanagement has resulted in a short roster with no depth?

A picture just for you, Tebow lover:
I wouldn't say he throws a good deep ball (compare what he does to what Stafford or Big Ben does--those guys throw it deep well) but he's much better throwing it deep than he is anywhere else on the field.

The NY tabloids ran large backpage photos of a shirtless Tim Tebow jogging at Jets training camp. Dustin Pedroia pasted a photo of his head on Tebow's muscle-bound body and hung it in his locker.

Almost 450 posts and the season hasn't even started yet. This is going to be a wild ride.
I believe the longest thread in SoSH history is the AAYSA thread before the ezboard switch; I think that this thread, depending on when/if Tebow becomes the starting QB and/or Rex has employment troubles, could top it. It's a potential perfect storm of schadenfreude.
