Enjoyed this article today, as it referenced the possibility of everyone's favorite Minuteman (besides maybe Will Herndon) coming back to coach soon.....

Don't see anything out there for the Minutemen....best win of the year last night vs Davidson (who had just beaten Kansas) to bring record to 10-3. So far they've won the games they should have won, and lost the games they probably should have lost (Florida State, Miami, and College of Charleston). They've scrapped the god awful dribble drive offense that Kellogg brought from Memphis for a more up tempo/pressing unit. Relatively weak A-10 when you get beyond Xavier, St Louis, Temple, and maybe St Joe's. Seems like a trip to the NIT is a relatively reasonable goal, and with a young squad, maybe the NCAA's in a year or two.

10-3 is really the best one could have reasonably expected. Hopefully, they can take care of business in their last non-conference game.
The way this team has been able to come back from 2nd half deficits and close out games is very impresseive. This team is still very young and starts 3 sophs, one junior and one senior. This team should be better next year and, if the players can continue to improve, could be great in 2013-2014. The program really does look like it is on the right track something that was unclear last March.

Another win against a Fordham team that had just beaten an ACC team (GT) and a ranked team (Harvard). Not sure why you think the A-10 is weak this year. I just read it is 7th highest rated conference (just behind SEC and ahead of the PAC and MVC). Hell, the worst team by far is the conference is Rhode Island and they just beat an ACC team (BC).

A lot has happened in the past couple weeks to change my opinion....the 2 Fordham results you mentioned, Temple beating Duke, Dayton almost beating Seton Hall and then knocking off St Louis, La Salle beating Xavier, etc. Xavier going in the tank won't help the leagues perception though, almost need them (or Temple) to assert themselves as legit top 25 team in my opinion, to possibly get the selection committee to think of the A10 as a league that merits 3-4 teams in the tourney.Another win against a Fordham team that had just beaten an ACC team (GT) and a ranked team (Harvard). Then, the rubber hits the road:
Wed 2/8 vs. St. Bonaventure (12-7, #91 in CBS RPI rankings)
Sat 2/11 @ St. Joe's (13-9, #55 in CBS RPI rankings) - beat them at home
Sat 2/18 vs. LaSalle (16-6, #68 in CBS RPI rankings) - lost to them away
Tues 2/21 vs. Xavier (14-7, #46 in CBS RPI rankings)
Sat 2/25 @ Dayton (14-7, #61 in CBS RPI rankings)
Wed 2/29 @ Temple (15-5, #13 in CBS RPI rankings)
before ending the regular season vs. URI.
A 2-4 record through this difficult stretch would leave UMass at 21-9, 10-6, a probable #4-6 seeding in the conference tournament and a good chance at an NIT bid.

Joe Lunardi currently has them as a #14 seed in his most recent Bracketology

With Temple a #9, Dayton a #10, and Xavier & St. Louis both #11s. I just can 't see the A-10 getting 5 bids.
Sagarin has UMass ranked #80 overall out of 345 D-1 programs, putting them 7th in the A-10 (which is ranked 8th among conferences). Their schedule strength is #206, surpassing only LaSalle (#220) among conference foes, which speaks to amfox's rubber-meeting-road post.
Speaking of LaSalle, I have no earthly idea how or why Sagarin's system puts them at #58 with such a pathetic schedule. They're ahead of Dayton for chrissakes. The Flyers (#74 with a #62 schedule) have beaten both JS Top 25 teams they've played (Alabama & St. Louis), and are 4-2 vs the JS Top 50. The Explorers are 0-0/0-1, with that loss coming at Temple (they also lost at Pitt when they were #16 in the polls, but JS now has them at #70). Dayton's got an OT loss at Miami-OH (#200), which is offset by LaSalle's loss at Delaware (#196). The Flyers also have a loss vs #90 Buffalo, but LaSalle lost to #124 Robert Morris. The balance of their schedule strength is a landslide in favor of Dayton. So is the Flyers' recent loss to URI (#242) really enough to offset all their quality wins and schedule strength relative to LaSalle? What am I missing here? Such incongruities have been a frustrating hallmark of Sagarin's systems for three decades.

1) Putney is really skinny. I was really excited to see him play. Unfortunately, he got two early fouls in the first half and sat the rest of the half. He had a good second half. He was the potential to be very good.
2) Chaz Williams is really short.
3) The team plays with a lot of energy and is athletic. They did have a lot of enforced turnovers. They also take a lot of 3 pters, a few ill advised.
4) The biggest problem in the games was defensive rebounding and the lack of a defensive for in the paint. GW got a lot of points going to the basket. Putney as their best defensive rebounder and blocked some shots, but this seemed to be the teams biggest flaw.

Most of the remaining 6 are tough, road tilt @ St Joe's, Home dates with La Salle and Xavier, @ Dayton, @ Temple, and then end the season at home vs URI. Probably asking too much to go 4-2, but if they were able to pull it off I'd still say they could put themselves in position to be an at large tourney team depending on what they do in the A-10 tourney and what some of their fellow bubble teams did down the stretch.

Chaz Williams to Raphiael Putney for the alley-oop dunk vs St. Bonaventure. Everyone's raving over the slam (including the announcers in this clip), but Chaz's pass is where the bread was buttered on that play. It was absolutely perfect.
Not sure how the ref didn't call a foul on that play. The most exciting thing about this team is that it best three players are sophs (Williams, Morgan & Putney).

Woo! Big win tonight. How was the game, Franklin? And more importantly, how were the wings?
Corsi, of course I came down with the stomach bug yesterday so we didn't go. I did watch the second half on CSNNE. Some anxious moments late, but Chaz was unbelievable. I am planning on going to the URI game on 3/3.

Big game at Temple tonight. I'm hoping we get off to a better start and give ourselves a chance. Hey, stranger things have happened!
Tied at 88 with 44 ticks left in OT.

Gotta appreciate the effort, still hurts to lose a close one though. Didn't help though that Temple had 40 FT attempts to our 10.
40 to 10? Yikes. That's bad. It is hard to make a judgement with not watching the game but with that difference, it is miracle they were still in it.
Really looking forward to next year.
Basically, everyone will be back.

Welcome to Philly - the city of Brotherly Love. What a joke; now a 1st round bye in the A-10 tournament is out. They will have a home game on Tuesday as long as we beat URI on Saturday.

UMass did clinch the #8 seed in the A10 tournament and will host Duquesne at the Mullins Center on Tuesday night at 7pm. Winner goes to Atlantic City to play top seed Temple on Friday at noon. Would love to get a rematch with Temple, I think UMass could knock them off. A trip to the A10 semis would likely get them a home game in the NIT. I think they need to at least win Tuesday though, a loss to Duquesne could put them out of the NIT altogether. Right now NITology has UMass as a #6 seed.

Went to the game yesterday against URI, an 89-83 win. Very good crowd. I'm pretty encouraged by the support this program is getting, absolutely nothing like when I was there 5-6 years ago. 7,501 was the announced attendance, that is spectacular for an A10 conference game especially considering URI didn't bring that many fans. Student section was full as well.

RS Fan, I was there too. Great crowd; I'm hoping for a similar crowd on Tuesday night. If we can get by the Dukes I like our chances against Temple. Carter was huge yesterday along with Morgan. It seems they too often settle for a quick outside shot, but when they were shooting like they were yesterday it doesn't matter as much. The good news is that they return everyone but Carter next year along with a nice recruit and some players coming back from injury. Program is heading in the right direction.
