If you've read any of LoweTek's rants on the subject - I've had similar experience. I finally pulled the plug on them in the spring of '05 after they wanted to charge me some crazy amount for a service call on rented equipment. Of course once I pulled the plug they had all sorts of incentives for me to come back - including a free service call to fix their equipment. I (not so) kindly informed them that if the sevice call had been free to begin with, they'd still have a customer.

I pretty much only used the TV for baseball anyhow, so I haven't really missed it except for that. But I do really miss watching baseball, so now that I'll finally have broadband - I'm really hoping I can make something llike the unblock-us or hidemyip work so I can watch the Sox.

Just got back from the MLB.com Fan Upfront at Chelsea Market in NYC. It was a fantastic event that showcased all of the MLB.com products in 2012.

Jack Morris, Frank Thomas, Mark McLemore and Jeff Nelson were all in attendance, and were available to speak with us and take pictures. Frank in particular was gracious and forthcoming, discussing his playing days and sharing stories openly.

MLB had six stations set up - mobile products, Apple TV/Roku, PlayStation, Social Media, XBox, and MLB.tv. The MLB.com product and technical teams were on hand at the stations, interacting with the invitees and discussing the new products.

Mobile products: MLB At Bat 12 for iOS will be released tomorrow, and for those with an MLB.tv subscription (premium only, I believe), the app will be free. For those purchasing the app without an MLB.tv subscription, there are two purchase options - $14.99 for the year, or $2.99 per month. Also, there will be only one app this year for all iOS devices, previously the iPhone and iPad apps were separate purchases. At first glance, there weren't too many other changes with the functionality of the app except for minor UI cleanups. I found out that the iOS development team is lean - only four developers and a total staff of eight people create and maintain the app from conception through deployment. Fairly impressive for an app that has so many different functions.

I briefly saw the Android and Windows Mobile apps, which seemed to be similar to iOS. For the one or two people that still use Palm products, there will be no Palm app this year.

One of the engineers on hand told me that MLB will be releasing a new app (separate from MLB At Bat), which will provide an enhanced in-game experience for fans at each MLB park. The app will have interactive maps for each park that are downloadable and available offline for use at the park - food options, restrooms, etc are all documented graphically. So far they have 27 of the maps completed with a target release scheduled for the end of spring training.

Apple TV/Roku: I only spent a minute at the station, nothing too remarkable to report aside from minor year over year UI improvements

PlayStation: I don't own a PS3, but the app looks very smooth and easy to use. The quality of the video feed looked the best on PS3 compared to the other set top products (Apple TV, Roku, XBox).

Social Media: Not a whole lot to report here aside from the standard Facebook/Twitter/Pintrest pages. This team was by far the most outgoing and friendly during the event. They were actively recruiting people for their part time in-park social media reporting positions. Applications are available on the MLB.com jobs page if you are interested, and all apps will be personally reviewed by the social media team (rather than HR).

XBox/Kinect: The first launch of the XBox MLB.tv app should happen "in a few weeks" per the Microsoft and MLB.com reps at the station. I was able to use it with ease. The best part - Kinect will be enabled for both voice and motion, so no controls will be necessary, even for scrolling through games. Not all of the MLB.tv functionality is there, but the teams will be adding to it throughout the year. Apparently the most requested enhancement during the beta period has been the park noise only feature, which should be available over the summer.

MLB.tv: The most notable improvement was the integration with CBS fantasy baseball.

To answer the question above about the max number of IP addresses - they generally allow three IP addresses to access one account simultaneously. The person I spoke with said the policy was currently under review. EDIT - my friend who attended with me said he heard fron another MLB.com employee that four are allowed concurrently.

Also, regarding the lag issue, the engineers told me that they have to take the feeds from the networks rather than the ballparks at the moment. Thus they have to wait for the network stream, encode it, and broadcast it over the net. Taking the feeds from the ballparks directly is on the product development list, but is at least a year or two away.

For parting swag, MLB gave us a mini backpack. In the backpack were an MLB.com hat, an MLB.com t-shirt, a ball containing autographs four of the major leaguers in attendance, and a coupon for a month free of Xbox Live Gold. I also got an iPhone 4 case etched with the traditional MLB logo, courtesy of Coveroo.



Also, the food was fantastic - lots of diverse ballpark-like foods, plus some upscale appetizers like Colorado lamb chops.

Overall, the event was well done and I would definitely attend it next year.

It's been done in the past. I think you got up to 4 simultaneous logins. I shared with a couple SoSHers last year. Blackouts are based on IP, so your bro would not get Sox games via the service.

I can't speak for android, but I downloaded the new At Bat app on iPhone today and it seems identical to last year's version, except that the app itself was free and required me to login to my MLB.tv account to activate the premium features (I am a MLB.tv Premium subscriber). There were also options when I opened it to launch the Lite version or pay $15 for the full version if you don't have Premium.

The only thing you'll miss out on is the ability to watch the spring training games in the meantime. The price should be the same on Opening Day.

It seems like there are significantly more games available this year for spring training across all teams. There's at least 2-3 games basically every day starting this saturday. I'm so excited to have baseball to watch!

Well, I'm taking the plunge -- today I cancelled my MLB Extra Innings package on DirecTV, and bought an MLB.tv Premium subscription. I plan on primarily using an AppleTV and/or XBox to watch games on the big screen when I'm at home. But it'll be nice to now also have the option to watch games on my iPad and/or iPhone as well. Throw in the MLB audio access for listening in the car or at work and it's a pretty sweet deal for $125 (which is about $50 less than what I paying DirecTV for EI). I have a bit of trepidation about whether the HD video quality will be up to snuff, but given the increased viewing and listening flexibility I think it'll be worth it.

I'm seeing the same thing, the Lite version is not that great compared to the full version from last year (at least what I remember), I'm tempted to just pay the $15 for the better app even though I have the premium subscription already.

Let me get this right; you have the MLB.tv Premium Sub? If so, the new app should ask you for your username and password. That will activate the rest of the features. If this is true, do not pay the $15...you don't have to.

Based in large part on the feedback in this thread, I've purchased a Roku device and an MLB.TV premium subscription.

In reviewing the FAQ on the MLB.com site for setting up the channel on my Roku account, it says to select the MLB.TV icon and add that channel. However, the only channel I see for MLB.TV has 2011 shown. Does anyone know of this is the correct channel? Or, will the correct channel not be available until later, as LoweTek mentions above?

Incidentally, I read the page LoweTek links to to mean that MLB.TV for Roku wouldn't be available intil April in Canada, but I could very well be mistaken.

Update: Apparently the 2012 Roku channel isn't available yet, as the current channel displays as message saying Coming Soon when I add it to my lineup. Video plays fine on my iPad, so there's that.

You don't want to download the $14.99 version. That is for people who don't have a Premium MLB.TV account, but still want to get the full version of At Bat. Download the Lite (free) version, then upgrade the app by entering your MLB.TV info. That's the way to do it (for iOS at least; not sure about Android). When you open it, there's an option to link the app to your MLB.com account. Doing that will link it to your MLB.TV account. That's what I did and I get all of the features of At Bat 12.

Yeah. I had no problem getting MLB on a 4S and a 3G2 (both running iOS5) but got the "Incompatible" message for the old 3G running 4.2.1.

As of January, >85% of iPhone users were running 4.3 for higher (66% running 5+) so presumably MLB doesn't feel it's worth targeting the remainders.

IIRC, you would have to buy it two different times because they are two completely different devices. (kindle fire runs a different OS then the iPhone)

Witopia (http://www.witopia.net/welcome.php) with the mlb.com package is a solid combination. There are of course various (free) proxy servers around, but my own experience has not been very good in that respect. Witopia is inexpensive and solid. I never miss a game due to any blackout restrictions. (I am in no way, shape, or form affiliated with Witopia, other than being a customer.)

With MLB.tv Premium including the phone and tablet app for mobile viewing it seems insane to pay more money for the Extra Innings package. Hell for around the same money you could buy MLB.tv Premium AND a Roku to watch it on if you don't have one or an Apple TV or PS3 or whatever.

Well, there's still the signal quality issue in multiple forms. I can't watch MLB.TV at work, my cell phone network has spotty data reception in my area, my wireless bandwidth is not incredibly impressive at home, and I don't have a handy location to use to put my PS3 on a LAN drop instead of wireless (and I am not a handyman, I'd prefer not to try to run cable through the wall). If I was confident that I could get the same viewing quality with MLB.TV as with Extra Innings, given equivalent DVR capabilities, then it would be insane to get Extra Innings. If I'm going to be filled with rage at shitty picture quality because of personal technology issues that are not the fault of MLB.TV, followed by having to drop MLB.TV and pay the in-season price for Extra Innings, then the decision is a little tougher.

I tested my download speed for my PS3 over the wireless last season when I was thinking about this, and it was right on the border of what might have been acceptable. That was an old PS3, which has since had the motherboard die, so I need to check and see if the combination of increased cable internet speeds and a newer Slim PS3 might have improved the situation.

I am an idiot. Have a Droid Bionic and have had the MLB at Bat app since it came out. I love the app and it worked perfectly. Helped me rediscover the joy of a radio broadcast. This year at Bat Lite is free with the Premium subscription. MLB says Lite is the same as the $14.95 version, but there is some reason a difference blah blah.

Anyway, in previous years with at Bat you would turn it off by pressing the Menu key and then choosing Exit. This year I can't figure out how to turn it off. Nothing happens (no display, popup, etc) when I press Menu. I was streaming the WEEI audio feed yesterday and had to stop listening. I tried everything and the feed wouldn't stop. Finally had to turn off the phone. Did some cursory searching and couldn't find anything. Obviously, I am missing something.

I stop the feed by hitting the big stop icon then I back out to the scoreboard and then back out once again and the app is exited. If you don't stop the feed then it keeps running in the background.

Could anybody with MLB.TV/Roku experience please let me know how it works in terms of DVR-ish controls? I have read you get stuck with dead air during commercials on live games, and even on archived if you don't FF at the right time. I expect to mostly watch archived games, or at least start 1st inning while game is further along. Do you have ability to FF/Rew? Is there an MLB.TV condensed game available with the package?

Maybe there will be new features on the Roku this season, I have no idea. But as of last season, archived games on the Roku had a "jump to inning" feature that allowed you to start at any particular half-inning. Fast-forwarding was possible, but kind of a pain because it you could only see where you were on the timeline. The image itself did not FF, allowing you to see exactly where you were. You cold also use this rudimentary FF or the "Jump to inning" for the completed portions of an in-progress game. Roku didn't include access to condensed games (though there was a brief highlight package available) or the audio overlay which allowed you to listen to the radio announcers over the TV feed, which I thought was pretty cool.

I also love MLB.tv because though it has the same blackout rules for live games as anything else, the archives allow you to watch either team's broadcast, allowing me (in New York) to avoid the damn YES network feed of Yankee-Red Sox games as long as I waited until the game was over to watch it.

Does anyone know when mlbtv will work for the Roku? Mine continues to says "Coming soon." I even uninstalled and reinstalled the app.
