The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to surrender Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom in a trade for New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul, sources tell ESPN.com's Marc Stein.

Sources close to the process tell Stein that the Houston Rockets remain part of the talks and are trying to complete a deal that would send Gasol to Houston and the Rockets' Luis Scola, Kevin Martin and Goran Dragic to New Orleans, along with Odom.

Yahoo says there's also a first-rounder from the Rockets to the Hornets

This is a nightmare for Boston. They get Paul without giving up Bynum. Solid. How exactly are the Rockets the one giving up the draft pick either?

Daryl Morey, I hate your face.

Really not sold on this for LA if they can't also swing Howard. Gasol was so good for them in their successful playoff runs. Don't see how they make up for the loss of both him and Odom this coming season. May still be a good deal for them, but at least for this year I think it's probably a slight step back if they can't get that third guy.

It's the fundamental problem of having the league own the team, isn't it? Stern should know better than to have not solved this by now

Do the other owners object to Paul being traded or do they object to him being traded to LA? Or do they just see this as a ridiculously lopsided deal?

Maybe the title of the thread should be adjusted?

It's like a bad fantasy league where all the other owners vote trades down. Ha!

BTW I'm guessing the league would have had same reaction to Rondo-Paul trade. Or any other deal for that matter. So I'm guessing Stern won't pay any mind to the objections. But who knows...?

Perhaps the owners smell a chance of Howard moving to the Lakers forming a Kobe/Paul/Howard "Miami West" team and want none of it.

Considering Stern just got the NBA owners 7%, roughly 300mil, of BRI back in the labor negotiations, I feel pretty confident he's gonna tell them "too bad" about CP3 trade.

Does the NBA own the Hornets or did the other owners all chip in some cash to purchase the team?

The Hornets sold for over $300M so I imagine it's the latter scenario unless the league was able to borrow the money to purchase the Hornets?

I would think ANY deal would be looked on unfavorably until the team is bought if the owners were to be consistent. I don't know how I feel here. As a Celtics fan, I am thrilled, but I'm not sure this should be allowed to be killed.

Some owners pushed Stern to demand that trade be nullified, and the Hornets be made to keep Paul on the roster for the foreseeable future, sources said. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was one of the most vocal in a chorus of owners irate with the belief that the five-month lockout had happened largely to stop big-market teams from leveraging small-market teams for star players pending free agency.

While I agree with your larger point, there's really no comparison to the original Gasol trade or any other trade. Those teams weren't owned by the NBA. But it's bad policy for the nba to void trades while it owns a team.

This league owning the team shit needs to be figured out, because as much as I don't want the Lakers to build a superteam, it's complete BS that Mark Cuban can be involved in this at all. Conflict of interest much?

I really don't understand how Stern can nix this deal. It doesn't make any sense. I mean, I love it as a C's fan but if I were a Laker fan I'd be livid right now. They're giving up a damn good player in Gasol and a versatile forward in Odom for a PG with a questionable knee and 1 year left on his contract. It's not like the original Gasol trade at all. Very strange.

This would be my guess. The Lakers were giving up a hell of a lot of size to acquire Paul, especially dangerous with the oft-injured Bynum. Howard had to be the other shoe to drop in the Laker master plan.

I wondered how this whole league owning NO and Paul would play out. Always figured that Stern and co wouldn't let Paul walk for a bag of balls as it's in the best interest of the franchise if they try to keep him there.

Seems like they don't even know. Whoever said this would be a complete mess was right.

The league has owned the Hornets for a year. There's seriously been no one willing to buy that franchise? Over-expansion has really hurt the NBA and NHL. They should have contracted the Hornets and the Kings/Grizzlies during the lockout.
