I'm about to set up my own small business (solo law firm).

I will be renting space in an office suite used by several lawyers. They will give me my own phone number with the usual voicemail, etc., free as part of my suite rent. However, I won't actually be in the office much and will be moving around quite a bit during the week. I'm also not sure how long I'm going to stay in this suite - probably a couple of years at the most.

My own attorney has recommended that I get my own permanent, portable phone number, which would even let me get a good business number (something ending in two zeroes rather than a random crap number). Supposedly there are Websites that let you order such a thing. I am a complete n00b at this.

What sites are best for ordering such a number? How expensive is it? How does it physically work, i.e. how does it "know" to ring through to the phone you happen to be at?

Thanks.

Just throwing it out there, but would Google Voice work for your needs?

Maybe. I know other attorneys who use it. But I have absolutely zero idea how it works. I am really an idiot when it comes to this, and need moron-sized explanations.

Thanks.

Google Voice, hermano. It's free. You can have it ring on every phone you have at once. You control where it rings. You can block numbers. Send text messages from a computer. Get transcribed voicemail and you can pick your number or port a number over.

Google Voice gives you a phone number. This is the phone number you give out clients, friends, lovers, etc.

You go on the google voice website and play the role of

by telling google voice that when it receives a call from a list of client phone numbers it should ring your office phone. When it gets a call from the kids all of your phones should ring (work, cell, home, etc). When your wife calls it should go to voicemail. When your lover calls it should ring your pay as you go throw away phone.

So, not to necro a thread, but this seems like the best place for the question. I would like to use Google voice, and have a number already. I want Google voice to ring to my phone, but I also want my cell phone number to remain in tact and accessible while Google voice is active. Is this possible?

Example
My mom texts me on my cell phone, and my sister texts me on my Google Voice number. Will both text messages go through to my phone if Google voice is active?

I have a GV # and people can text that number and it goes to the GV app on my Android phone. People can also text me at me cell phone number, and it goes to the messaging app on my phone. Is that what you are asking?

Yea, this is basically what I want. I've just never really messed around with Google Voice before, and when I signed in on my phone, the GV number was coming up on caller ID when I dialed out. I don't want that.

That's configurable. You can set GV to make all calls, make just international calls, prompt you to use GV every time you dial or not use GV at all. There's a GV widget to allow easy toggling of these options if you need to change it frequently or you can just go to settings inside the app to change them.

What jerca said. On my phone, I just use it for voice mail and some texting. It was handier for me when I had 1200 texts per month. Sometimes I would use them up. Now I have more so I don't use it as much. My oldest daughter uses it the same way. My younger daughter does all of her texting over Google Voice for free. Its nice because I can login to her account on the computer and see what she is up to.
