These ten year contracts always seem like the rich dude marrying the stripper and not getting a prenup. Granted, Pujols is a pretty hot stripper -- real tits, brings chicks into bed every week, makes eggs benedict from scratch and even gets along with your mom -- but you still can't tell me that it's not all going to seem like a bad idea when year eight rolls around.

Given the way the Marlins are throwing money around, and with the new stadium, I wonder whether Loria will look to sell in a year or two, and stick someone else with the back end of the potential Pujols contract

But it's not like potential buyers will ignore that $160m-$180m liability on the balance sheet.

Who's going to give him more than 3rs/25Mil?

I don't know if anyone will, but I can see Cuddyer getting something like 3/24 or 4/30. He's only missed truly significant (read: over thirty games) once in the past seven seasons, he plays a lot of positions, he has some homerun power (20 last year, usually around 15, high of 32), he isn't a complete free swinger (usually 6-7 walks per 100 PAs), and has been an above average hitter on the whole almost every year of the past half decade.

Admittedly, the quality of his fielding dampens the appeal of having a 1B/2B/OF on the roster, but he has some pretty solid skills. I think it's worth a shot, although maybe he should have taken 3/25 (unless he wants out of Minnesota) I can't blame him for not taking it.

I think I've pretty much figured out how the dominoes are going to fall for Florida, or at least intended to fall. Sign Bell, Sign Reyes, Sign Pujols, Trade Gaby Sanchez + filler (maybe Nunez or whatever hes called now as sweetner) for Gio Gonzalez. I think that is the end game with them.

DALLAS -- Marquee free-agent first baseman Albert Pujols, fueling the most lucrative bidding war in baseball history, obtained three 10-year contract proposals Tuesday that would pay him in excess of $200 million, an official close to the negotiations told USA TODAY.

Well if its legit lets look down the list on who could afford to make a big bid

Most Likely
Cubs/Rangers - Even though the Rangers have publicly denied this, perhaps they have decided to use their Cliff Lee money from last year and go for it. The Cubs are looking to create a new identity and weaken a rival. This would do both

Maybe
Mariners- Also in on Fielder, might be looking to get the guy who is older but has the lesser chance of breaking down (assuming hes 31)
Blue Jays- They need a 1B and have also been in on Fielder
Orioles/Nationals- Duquette has mentioned that they do not have to sign a big FA, however its still possible and they also have the money to spend. The Nats offered a similar deal to Teixeria a few years back, always willing to throw money out there.

I mean these are the 6 legit possibilities here and the Orioles/Nationals would be a stretch of course you could throw the crazy rumors of the Red Sox and Yankees getting involved and then spinning A-Gon or Teixeria for a front of the rotation guy. But I think in the end Pujols stays in St Louis. Would he be willing to tarnish his legacy in STL for an extra 20 million? That's what it comes down to.

Wouldn't it be ironic justice if Ruben Amaro's stupid ass contract extension to Ryan Howard ($25 million per year! And 2 years before his present contract was going to be over!) comes back and bites him in the ass by resulting in a disgruntled Pujols moving to the Marlins?

Is it me? If a team is going to sign Pujols or Fielder to a contract of any significant length (8-10 years??? That's crazy talk now that juice and HGH are off the shelves, right?) and the dollars it will take it to get done, wouldn't it have to be an AL team? If there's two guys that are destined to be "DH-except during interleague" (a la Papi) during years 6-10 or whatever, I am pretty sure these are the two guys.
I am fascinated that the Orioles are not being rumored more around either of these guys... Duke must be slipping.

Theo was lucky enough to slither his way into that job in the first place, which allowed him to avoid actually dealing with the backside reality of spending one's financial flexibility bone dry. So while i don't doubt that he'll ultimately steer the Cubs down the same "spend $160m+/per on payroll or have no shot" ultimatum road he did here, i will give him enough credit that he's not going to do that in his first year there and on the first player he signs.

Besides, Pujols is too much of a legitimately elite/top-shelf FA option. Theo is more of an overspending a little less on the flavor-of-the-month type of guy.

On that note, and similar to all the 6 year offers on CJ Wilson supposedly floating around yesterday, i'm guessing all this talk on a 3rd Pujols team is complete bs.

The Yankees have tired enough of Burnett to put him on the trading block this offseason, according to the New York Post. The Yanks are ready to hear offers and "are willing to pay $8 million of the $33 million Burnett is owed over the next two seasons," according to the Post.

Even with the promised payment help from the Yankees, nobody has come calling yet about the soon-to-be 35-year-old Burnett, the paper notes. That is likely due to a "dip in velocity" Burnett has suffered over the last two years as well as his uneven (21-26) record in that time, the paper notes. This past season, he went 11-11 with a 5.15 ERA.

So, after all is said and done, the Marlins spent close to $200M on Reyes, Bell, and Buehrle and expect the crowds to suddenly show up to support the team? They're fucked.

(Granted, the Cards are likely to give 10 years and $220M to a guy who is 31?. All of this seems insane).

DALLAS -- The Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs have had numerous conversations the past two days that centered around Matt Garza, according to a major league source. However, Chicago remains hesitant to move the pitcher that most consider to be the team's ace.

Another source told ESPNChicago.com that the Cubs asked for right-handed pitcher Scott Feldman as one piece in a Garza deal. Texas was unwilling to part with Feldman, the source indicated.
