Kenny is looking ahead

Do the Raiders hire a true G. M. next year?

Chris Mortensen (11:09 AM)
Word is they will begin their official search for a true GM right after the first of year.

The Marlins and Cubs have agreed to a trade that will send Carlos Zambrano to Miami for Chris Volstad, reports Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago (Twitter links). The trade is still pending physicals. Levine says the Cubs will pay $18MM of Zambrano's $15MM salary.

That's quite the trick

I wonder if he's self aware enough to realize what that says the rest of the baseball world thinks of him and his value to a baseball team.

So Miami gets Zambrano for 2.5m and all they have to give up is Volstad? Theo couldn't have gotten more than that for eating 15.5m?

A better question is...where were the Red Sox on this one? Surely Zambrano at 2.5 mil is much better than Carlos Silva at 1 Mil.

Okay ...

Who do the Sox have equal to Volstad?

Why would Theo cut that kind of bargain with the Red Sox?

Why would Zambrano waive the no-trade for Boston, since his relationship with Ozzie was key to his agreeing to go to Miami?

Volstad has been very underwhelming the past few years, his value has taken a legitimate hit since being drafted in the first round.

Compensation is still yet to be decided (most likely it will be something like a slightly used baseball)

Depends how bad Big Z wanted out, I see where you're coming from but we don't know the whole story on where he would have or would not have gone.

Carlos Silva is a minor league deal. This...probably isn't. Silva would be easier to cut, since it's highly likely both would suck.

Hanley Ramirez playing defense at a new position behind Carlos Zambrano with Ozzie Guillen in the dugout, no less. There are multiple potential homicide scenarios here.

Yes, the Red Sox were certainly looking for a hotheaded, possibly overweight pitcher who was extremely disappointing last year and hasn't had impressive peripherals (and has been injured with increasing frequency) in 4 years.

Toss Logan Morrison into the mix as well. Not yet a certified crazy like the others, but I like to think he could contrubute to this in some way.

That is currently the record until Lincecum gets paid. He filed at $21.5MM.

How the fuck does Jack Cust get a two year deal?

https://twitter.com/...477432913633281Edit: Now being reported as a 1 yr deal with a club option. Makes more sense, but Cust seems like a spring training invitee, not someone that you need to give a ML contract to.

It's like the GM forgot that the team isn't being moved to the AL until 2013.

'splain to me, if you can, how the Indians get Russ Canzler from the Rays, for nothing but $$?

Cleveland acquired one of Tampa Bay’s top prospects Tuesday, sending cash to the Rays for first baseman Russ Canzler. Canzler, 25, was the International League’s Most Valuable Player last season after batting .314 with 18 home runs and 83 RBIs in 131 games for Triple-A Durham.

Canzler, a right-handed hitter, was a strong candidate to open the year at first for the Rays before Tampa Bay signed Carlos Pena — a player the Indians had strong interest in this offseason.

I know, a 25 year old isn't a real prospect anymore, but he's got some skills, and you'd think you'd have to give up at least an "A" ball semi-prospect in return, no?

Canzler was dfa'd by the Rays - this was just getting something instead of nothing when he refused his AAA assignment.

According to the article, he's got options, so the receiving team can send him down (I understand your point about assignment, just pointing out he doesn't have to be on a 25 man roster). Considering his skill set, he strikes me as a guy who is worth more than just cash in exchange.

Not sure if this warranted its own thread, and since spring training has started I don't know if this qualifies as "hot stove" anymore, but still, a major move in the City of Three Rivers...
http://pittsburgh.pi...ws_pit&c_id=pit
Pirates sign All-Star Andrew McCutchen to a new 6 year, 51.5 mil deal that buys out 2 years of free agency AND includes an option year for 14.75 mil.
The Pirates have already been spending a boatload in recent years on the draft and international scouting and development; it finally seems as though they are ready to start unloading a little of their luxury tax money on the major league product. Fans have decried their frugality, but really, what talent have they had on the team in recent years to re-sign? What quality, home-grown talent have they let slip away? This seems like an important step on the road back to relevance for the 20-year losers.

This isn't big news, but it's funny news:

Rockies left-handed reliever Josh Outman is headed to the disabled list with a strained oblique-- and if you're prone to queasiness, let's just say you can stop reading there.

How did Outman hurt his side? From vomiting. Yes, vomiting.
