Should be a good one. If Rex tries to run all day, it will play into the Pats hands. I think you need to throw on the Pats D until they prove they can stop someone, even with Mark Sanchez.

Pats by a TD.

agree. and think Rex is to smart to disagree. on the other hand, Mayo is so key to the run defense, I worry about him not being there, but not too much, honestly. Mangold will help if healthy, but there are other holes on that line, in any case.

on the flip side, I think the Pats can run on the Jets even if I think they'll slow down Brady on the pass. Thomas isn't Mayo, but he's still a key cog so losing him will hurt.

Drives based on running bog down, so not a 30+ game, but 24 or so seems reasonable, as does holding the Jets to 20 or so.

Will call it 24-20 Pats.

Gonna be fun.

I think Spikes can pick up the slack against the Run, thought he played one of his best games vs. OAK after Mayo went down. The bigger issue with no Mayo is that you lose your defensive communicator and I don't think there is anyone else I really trust to set that defense. I guess Chung probably takes that role but that is a lot to ask a young player.

It was Guyton who took the reigns last week, and according to Belichick, he had similar responsibilities to Mayo.

Also, let's not forget that Mayo was injured halfway through the 2nd quarter, right after the Pats took a 14-10 lead. They only gave up 3 points the rest of the way until the garbage time 99 yard TD drive.

Edit: before the 99 yard drive, the Pats D gave up 227 yards on 5 drives after Mayo left, about 45 yards per drive, which is high. But it was gained on 40 plays, for 5.68 yards per play, which really isn't horrible (it would rank 20th in the league). On the season, the Pats are giving up around 7.2 yards per play, so the defense actually improved significantly on that metric once Mayo left.

Double edit: before Mayo left, the Pats had given up 173 yards on 24 plays, matching their season average of 7.2.

TE Aaron Hernandez (knee), DL Albert Haynesworth (back) & DL Mike Wright (concussion) return to practice today, Mike Rodak reports.

Woodhead (ankle), Edelman (ankle), Mayo (knee) and Vollmer (back) those not spotted at media-access portion of practice, Mike Rodak reports

A Jets loss would complete a week from hell for a huge slug of NY sports fandom.

If the Pats take care of business on Sunday, it will be just horrible the likes of:

With Woodhead and Edelman out of practice again, I think we'll see Vereen - who donned the black jersey this week as a top practice player - and Price dress and get a few snaps.

Is Price going to return kicks and punts? Or maybe Welker returns some punts? I guess Slater is an option, too.

I don't think they'll put that on Welker's plate.

Price or Slater - or some combination of the two - would be my guess.

Welker returned punts late in the last game. I bet he does it again, even if he just fair catches everything.

Good catch - I totally forgot about that.

I like his sure hands back there, but if I want to set someone loose, I'd go elsewhere. No need to expose him to more abuse, especially at one of the more vulnerable positions on the field, PR.

All of the ESPN "experts" picked the Pats.

SExy Rexy will have no difficulty playing the "us against the world" card this week.

I have no idea what, if anything, that gets him.

But he can do it if he wants to.

I've been told Darrelle Revis will shadow Wes Welker today. However, no Island. Revis will have safety help as part of bracket coverage

So now Plax, Mason and Holmes are publicly calling out the offensive scheme. A 3rd-straight loss in the form of a dominant Pats win could seriously send this Jets team into a tailspin (pun intended).

"They hate their coach!!" /Tom Jackson

Not sure how much of this is an issue with the scheme. I think the bigger problem is the 0-line is getting destroyed up front, so the team can't run, and Sanchez doesn't have time to throw the ball.

If Revis is really shadowing Welker with potential safety help, then turn to Gronknandez. None of their LBs can cover those guys, and Branch/Ocho will be all over the intermediate routes. I still like our offensive chances.

I call this as Schotty propaganda. I don't expect the Jets to do any more running today than they have all season. they will continue to use short passes to Tomlinson as their running game.

I was trying to sort this out too. The word was bracket coverage with a safety, though, so Rex must still think he can clog the middle on Gronk and Hernandez with the LBs (GRONK!!). Does this mean though, that if Welker lines up in the slot, Revis releases him to the safety if he cuts into the center but sticks with him if he goes to the outside? Who's covering the same side WR in this configuration, I wonder?

I'd love to see Branch light up Cromartie, depending upon how this plays out. Someonw refresh my memory--who did SD have on him?

Oh, and win today.

It's going to take a lot for the Jets to pass the Yanks, but the fact that they are on the list says something. I am very much looking forward to this game thread. It is going to be a mess,(range of attitudes will be from -1,000,000 in misery to +1,000,000 in happiness) but a fun read, too. Well, hopefully it won't be a mess, I hope the Jets lose and get humiliated. I hope Sanchez throws four picks. And I hope many Jet toes are lost in the process.
