AJ actually has good numbers against most of the Tigers, better than CC or Garcia:

Porcello's only faced NY a few times, he kills Tex, Jeter and Gardner:

Would not be surprised to see both guys pitch well. With Burnett, there is always the chance Jekyll shows up instead of Hyde (Game 2, '09 WS).

Porcello does have pretty good numbers against some of these Yankee hitters, and it's not like they've been hitting the cover off the ball in this series.

He just has to keep it in the park. He doesn't have to be perfect and he won't have to pitch 7 innings. With that said, no more Valverde. Having the Yankees see him a 3rd time will only make matters worse for Detroit. BTW, can you imagine that offense if Delmon Young ever figured it out and lived up to his full chubby faced potential?

After Burnett kept us at bay on September 1st, he's been downright serviceable (4.30 ERA; still has a terrible 1.39 WHIP). Burnett has seemed to make a career out of pulling huge games out of his ass. Wouldn't shock me at all if he pitched well.

I personally hate Porcello's stuff (yes I know he's very young), but he's seemed to have plateaued a bit. He doesn't have good velocity and his off speed stuff can disappear on him. He's just hittable (.339 OBP; 210 H in 182 IP).

Burnett gives the Yankees a puncher's chance. I just don't see Porcello fairing well tomorrow. Hopefully it's a shootout. That's the only way Detroit wins I think. Jeter is 0-9 against Porcello. Nunez is 2-3 (I know, a negligible sample size). No way would Jeter sit in a playoff game, but it certainly would be interesting if that happened.

Since 2001, this is the 9th time NY has been in the ALDS. Results of the first 8:

4-0 against Minnesota
0-4 against everyone else (LAA twice, CLE, DET)

It's completely unfair to have to play in an ALDS where you don't get to face the likes of a Brian Duensing.

Incredible stat, actually. Boy do the Twins fold like a cheap suit against the Yanks.

John Lackey gently weeps at the lost opportunity to shatter another record.

Rick Porcello, this is your time.

Starting AJ is a huge mistake.

They've got Mariano on 7 days rest. Starting AJ means a pretty good chance that 7 days turns into 187 days of rest.

Start Mo.

So Girardi came out and said Burnett is on a "short leash"? I get the concept but why come out and say it publicly?

Could be a little foreshadowing on Bobby V's part. A little slap at the Sox (his possible destination) for being unprofessional. Really reaching-I know.

it's an elimination game, anyone would be on a short leash. It's no secret that Detroit can now strategize for.

Worst possible scenario- AJ on the post season roster.

New worst possible scenario- AJ on the mound for the elimination game.

Burnett, 2011: 32 GS, 190.1 IP, 5.15 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 8.2 K/9, 3.9 BB/9, 49% GB, 4.77 FIP, 3.78 xFIP
Porcello, 2011: 31 GS, 182.0 IP, 4.75 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 5.1 K/9, 2.3 BB/9, 51% GB, 4.06 FIP, 4.02 xFIP

This is going to be a high scoring game most likely. Anything can happen - certainly not an AJ Burnett death walk for the Yanks. Their relievers are pretty well rested and ready to go should Burnett hiccup.

I'm wondering if there is a Game 5 if CC and Verlander would be available for an inning or 2 out of the bullpen.

I just have zero faith in Porcello. He has done nothing to show that he can handle this type of game whereas A.J, at any given moment, can throw a 2 hitter and, unlike Porcello, doesn't have to face Granderson, Cano, Arod, Tiexiera, etc. I know they are slumping but the Yankees, as a whole, are a much better lineup.

About the Yankees bats....I can't believe they scored 4 against Verlander's best stuff last night.

I agree that if they're swinging the bats well, they can out slug the Tigers.

Meh. The Yankee lineup outside of the Bronx isnt menacing to me. You saw it last night, dudes kept swinging as if the short porch were there.

I think the Tigers edge out another victory by 1 or 2 runs again.

Agree with this 100%

Porcello is just very hittable as I stated in last nights game thread. He doesn't miss a lot of bats.

Managers have addressed this already: CC probably yes (but it'd likely be stupid IMO), Verlander is done for the series.

I live for elimination games. Mostly, though, the Yankees lose them. The great thing about 1996-2001 is they only had two of them -- correct me if I'm wrong, anyone. Game 5 against Cleveland in 1997 and Game 7 in 2001 WS. The Yankees were never easier to watch than in that 1996-2001 run, except back in the really old days when they would coast to the pennant in an 8-team league and then face somebody in the WS.

Still, tonight is what it's all about as a fan. Personally, I think they win a crazy game. But it's possible that the Tigers will get ahead early and coast home. Who knows? The thrill is in watching.

Well, let's win two this week.

Texas is pretty good, eh? We spend all our team in the northeast talking about the Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies. But the Giants won the WS last year and Texas could very well succeed them this year.

Verducci:

But remember this: for all of the Yankees' successes, having their back against the wall is not a position of strength. Beginning with that walk off bloop single by Luis Gonzalez of Arizona to beat New York in the 2001 World Series, the Yankees are 4-8 in postseason elimination games, including 0-5 on the road.
