Another possible benefit would be knowing the outcome of the TB game. Could there be a marginal difference in how you manage if you know that it's not truly an elimination game, and that the worst-case scenario is the play-in game? It's hard not to cheer for rain right now. While the wait is a killer, it'd push Lester to full rest, and in turn put Lackey on full rest for #163, if he gets the call. Neither pitcher has me brimming with confidence right now, but it's much easier to see them coming through on full rest. Plus, the bullpen is gassed and needs a day (lots of use for AceBardPap in last few games).

Go take your corners, Lester.

Clay Buchholz has been activated off the disabled and will be in the bullpen tonight.
He said he is not an option to start tomorrow. He thinks he could get 4-5 outs.

Translated to reality...that means 4 or five hitters...which means 20-30 pitches?

I am not sure 20-30 pitches are worth any sort of risk to Clay's long or short term health. 20-30 quality pitches would be valuable at this point if there is no risk.
Either way, dude is a bulldog.

Think positive, man. 4-5 hitters = 1.3-1.7 innings of perfect ball.Translated to reality...that means 4 or five hitters...which means 20-30 pitches?

Joe Girardi had said he would respect the integrity of the playoff process and send his regular lineup out against Rays ace David Price.
Girardi kept his word.
Left fielder Brett Gardner is the only regular who gets the night off; Andruw Jones will take his place.

Price will go 8 tonight regardless. That's his "thing". CG unless you are getting bombed. Unlikely he'll get "bombed" during the game.
He and I have different plans then.

Indeed we did. Anyone who complains about Girardi doing what he has to do to get his team ready for the playoffs is out of his mind. The Sox have nobody to blame but themselves at this point. Can't ask anybody to bail them out now. They broke it....they need to fix it.

Maybe his desire for accolades for "playing the game the right way" will make him forget that taking guys out is likely the right thing to do for his team.
