Gonzo chasing balls in the dirt? Yeah, me too.

So how many good pitches will Gonzo see with Lavarnway hitting behind him?

Doesn't matter, Lavarnway's gonna do some damage tonight - I have a feeling.

I get the L-R-L-R batting order thing. Jed Lowrie is the best option the Boston Red Sox have as a cleanup hitter, with the season on the line and with two games to go?

Yeah, I'm all in... but I think we're fucked.

A few years back, my son asked why I get so stressed about being a Sox fan.
I said, "Because I've seen them lose when it doesn't seem possible to lose... and win when it doesn't seem possible to win."

I have seen enough of the former this month. How about a a couple of week's worth of the latter?

I have three job interviews today, one in which I'm the interviewee, two in which I'm the interviewer. There will be a lot of nodding and blah-blah-blahing today because my head won't really be in any of these interviews. My family is tense, my dogs are nervous, so just fucking win this thing so everybody can relax for a couple of days.

Doesn't it make you feel like executing someone.

I don't put too much stock in line-up construction, but can anyone explain why Gonzo is in the 5-hole now? Is there a strategic reason for it? I am asking seriously. Do they think Papi is swinging it better right now and is a better 3 hole hitter because of that?

It took awhile for it to sink in, but, now, I get it. By stacking Papi, Jed, Gonzo and Lavarnway, he has all of the guys that he's going to pinch run for, back-to-back-to-back-to-back. Imagine the late-inning basepath havoc that Gathright, Aviles, Lars and Expo will be able to create!!! Genius!!!

Made me laugh

Scott Lauber
Why Jed Lowrie in cleanup spot? Three extra-base hits in last two games. Also batting .340 with .901 OPS this season vs. LHP

Yeah and 289/315/438 (753 OPS) versus lefty starters.

Ok actually. Rain before game time, but it should clear out enough to play by about 7:30. That's my guess.

We have had lots of balls. What we need are some strikes, swing and miss or looking kinds preferred.

So Crawford bats every time and if he (ever) gets on, they have ballgirls run the bases. I'm in for that.

27 0-2 counts.

20 strikeouts on sliders in the dirt, 6 grounders to second base, one tape measure homer when the score is 17-0 O's.

He misses home plate and is tagged out in the dugout while Papi is hugging him to preserve the shut out.

I've been perplexed about Gonzo sliding to 5 since they put CC in the 2 spot. Even without the power, he's still the team's best pure hitter right now, and he's got no protection batting 5th. Without a threat of offense behind him he won't get pitched to whenever first base is open. Last night in the first inning is an example. IBB in the FIRST INNING. Tonight you have Lavarnway behind Gonzo. This is where we desperately miss Youk. We will have to win despite this lineup, I don't know how you can do this strategically.

Lowrie is coming up big today. Believe fuckers!

You (and Tito) must have missed that last AB from Jed with the game on the line last night.

Didn't matter what he did in that spot. He could have crushed the ball and it would have hit a bird and fallen directly into Markakis' pocket for the out.

They've swept (Oakland - what seems like 6 months ago) and then split (Bal & NY) in their last 3 doubleheaders, so, yeah, you may be right. They're 2-13 in their last 15 single game matchups!!!

Britton's been worse in the second half: 5.32 ERA, 1.60 WHIP.

And that guarantees nothing.

Exactly. Lowrie was overmatched by Johnson last night, and this was evident after the first pitch of that at bat. The marginal benefit from having him bat cleanup against a lefty starter is more than offset by key at bats late in the game. I suppose Tito could pinch hit in a key spot against a righty, but when you're needing to pinch hit for your cleanup hitter (while also decreasing Gonzalez' number of plate appearances), you're not putting yourself in the best position to win.

Yup! That about sums things up.

A short while ago, I stumbled zombie-like from my desk and took a walk outside (outside being Manhattan). There's a temporary, seasonal food court set up nearby across from Madison Sq. Park which I decided to check out. I purchased a "Maine Style" lobster roll (for culinary as well as Mojo purposes, of course) which I will consume around 6:30 and hope to keep down during tonite's game. Wish me (and the Sawx) luck!
