If you lose 10 "must-win" games and you're still not eliminated, those games aren't really must-win games. They're "It sure would be nice if we won" games. This game is must-win.

It would be refreshing if the offense would give the starter some breathing room so that EVERY pitch he throws, and every baserunner he allows, isn't a potential game breaker. That's just too much pressure, even for veteran pitchers.

The offense is partially to blame for the starter's lack of success this month. Every inning, every pitch is a grind. If the starters could relax a bit knowing the offense gave them a 3 or 4 run lead, there would be some easier innings. Same goes for the defense. Maybe they wouldn't be so tight out there if the game didn't hinge on every chance they get.

To those "Heads will Roll-ers", I say, stop your crying you whining fucking ingrates! Fire Theo? Fire Tito? Fire yourself!

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH! THEY HAVEN'T WON SINCE 2007! HOW MUCH LONGER MUST WE WAIT? WAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!

WHAT HAVE WE WON LATELY? ONLY ALL FOUR MAJOR SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THE PAST SEVEN YEARS? WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! WHY CAN'T WE WIN EVERY CHAMPIONSHIP EVERY YEAR??? WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

WITH AS BLESSED AS YOU'VE BEEN IN THE PAST TEN YEARS HOW DARE YOU WHINE ABOUT ONE TOUGH MONTH!

STOP YOUR FUCKING WEEPING YOU FUCKING MARYS!

For as terrible as things have gone for us this past month, WE STILL CONTROL OUR DESTINY!

Yes, that may not be a comforting thought given the way they played the past month, but once upon a time, A TIME SOME OF YOU SEEM TOO EAGER TO DISMISS, this organization, this team, this manager, faced a situation much more dire than the one they face now. They were coming off as embarrassing defeat against their bitter rival as any they suffered through in their history. They had both of their aces beaten in the first two games, with one sidelined with an injury with no guarantee that he would ever recover his brilliance in time to help in the series, and they were facing a deficit no team in the history in the sport had ever overcome.

But they had one thing going for them, and it's the same thing this team has: they controlled their own destiny.

If they just won the game that was in front of them, they got to keep playing. Regardless of what any other team in baseball did that night, as long as they won the game in front of them, they got to keep playing. This is exactly what this team is facing. Win the game in front of them, and then keep doing that, and regardless of what any other team in baseball does, they get to keep playing.

We are so damn due for a winning streak.

Now would be a great time.

No doubt about it. We have witnessed a historic collapse. But it is not the worst thing I have ever seen on TV... while living in London a few years back I flipped on the TV and was treated to witnessing a historic prolapse (of the vaginal variety) on a channel 4 tv show called "embarrassing bodies."

I was caught off guard as an unattractive middle-aged woman demonstrated exactly what this condition was for a live-studio audience. Google it. I don't need to - I will never forget it. Come to think of it, it is eerily similar to what we have witnessed this month.

All I can say is, the memory of witnessing such a cruel fate fades. And it will fade even quicker if we can pull this out....or tuck it back in.

Yeah, I thought about that as I posted it, but I really didn't want to explore just how far this must-win definition could go :P I'm going to take a Red Sox sell-out streak approach and define a must-win game as any game that if lost would take the potentiality of making the post season out of the Sox' hands and into fate's.

It's time.

They say they can prove that faith works wonders. The hallmark of this team's faithful has always been a willingness to believe in a team that has not always been easy to believe in. Good. That's what it is to be a Red Sox fan.

So be it.

That's been our lot through the last hundred-plus years. But this generation of faithful has gotten to cash in and in glorious fashion. The 2004 ALCS was scripted to the last detail to test and reward the tortured fanbase of the Boston Red Sox, and the 2007 Cleveland Series was there to filter out any clinging-on fans of convenience who were trophy-hunting without the will needed to stare into the seemingly inevitable gawping, doom that was obvious to the bandwagon fan.

There is no entitlement in sports. You don't win in the offseason or on the merit of you statistics. In wanting to win there is always the threat of disappointment, of heartache, of gut-wrenching loss. You don't get the high if you hedge your bets, if you hope, but with a discerning eye.

Is that you? Will that be you SoSH? I say no. I say we stay in this with all that we have left, our faith that is beyond fact and measure, that is inconceivable in rational scope. The kind of faith and belief needed will cost you your cynicism, your need to be predict disaster and be right. Can you walk into the fire? Will you test your mettle?

Mark me down as a glorious idiot, if you haven't already. But I, my brothers and sister of SoSH, am with this team to the end with all the belief I can muster.

Let's win this game.

Amen, brother! If the history of this team proves anything, it is that rooting for the Red Sox is not for the faint of heart. If the worst happens the offseason will offer plenty of time to grieve, but as long as we have life it costs nothing to BELIEVE!

I have pretty much given up on this team making any noise in the playoffs at this point. But I no longer care. Just win these damn games and make the fucking playoffs. These next two (and hopefully three) games are like the world series for me. Just win them. Win because I don't want this collapse to become The Collapse. Win because I never want to have to hear about the 2011 Red Sox again after this season ends. Win because Buck Showalter is a grumpy, heart-attack-faking old fuck who doesn't deserve the satisfaction that he's getting right now. Win because I've never forgiven Tampa for Matt Garza's 2 hit performance in Game 7. Win because B.J. Upton is a lazy piece of crap. Win because I somehow irrationally blame that entire shitfucked franchise for this year's Carl Crawford fiasco. Win because I'm surrounded by Yankee fans who won't shut their worthless fucking mouths. Win because Ellsbury deserves a shot at that MVP trophy (last night's catch not withstanding).

Most importantly, win because there's nothing worse than missing out on October. No matter how bad you look, no matter how you limp in, playoff baseball is the best. No more excuses. Dig deep and find a fucking way.

This game is must-win.

At least it's a "must not lose ground" game.

MFY will go supine in Tampa in 162. They haven't named a starter, will likely sit a few regulars and absolutely, positively will not use anyone good out of the pen. Girardi has even pre-spun tanking that game by complaining that MLB should've built in a two-day break before the playoffs.

Hold the fort, Erik.

David Ortiz used to talk like this: "We're going to Baltimore and we're gonna kick their ass, drink their beer and rape their bitches. That's why people gotta believe in the Sox. This is not apple Sox, or barbecue Sox. This is the Sox."

The whole team needs him to find that confidence and swagger again, and I actually think he will. Pregame shots of whisky may be involved. We will make the playoffs. I am not an "optimist" who can't handle reality without spinning everything "positively," but I do think we will make the playoffs.

The offense will score 7 or 8 runs in each of the next couple of games, and that will be barely enough.

This is not apple sox or barbecue sox. Remember that.

We all need to sack up. This might not be the most ideal situation or even the most endearing team. I get it; they've beat us down for the better part of a month and reminded us all of how little we can do. They control the situation and all we can do is control our reaction to it.

That said, I don't give a shit about the previous 30 days. All I care about is the next two. The playoffs start tonight.
