I'm not sure if Shanny will be doing videos for all possible suspensions but this is pretty cool.

Nice. That'd be all kinds of awesome if he does that for all of them.

Also, what a dumb freaking hit. But does suspended a guy for preseason games really do much of anything? He got 1 last year and this one is preseason + 1 regular season. Which yeah, is more games. But the same number of regular season. Think it would make more sense if suspensions can't be served in preseason games.

Kyper says he just handed out 10 to Shelley. 5 preseason, 5 regular season. I like the Shanny era.

#NHL news. #Flyers Shelly suspended 10 games. 5 pre-season and first 5 gms into the regular season.

Nap- One thing to keep in mind is that for a fringe guy like Leblond, he's got no shot of making the team if he can't play in the preseason.

My only objection to that entire piece was the sparkly font. Shannahan coming forward and being the face of suspensions, rather than having some corporate office "announce" it, I think is a huge thing for accountability.

Money. Well done, Shanny. Off to a nice start.

Good point and in his case missing preseason and the chance to show what he can do blah blah blah might be a bigger punishment. For some reason I had in my mind that he was a regular/had a slot nailed down. It's the preseason for me too...

I don't care if Shanahan sounds like a broken record - this system of a transparent justification of the suspension is eons ahead of Colin Campbell's "little diving puke" days.

In short, I echo Jed Zeppelin's masturbatory praise of Shanahan's efforts.

Rule 41.1 states that "the onus is on the player applying the check to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, he must avoid or minimize contact."

Wow. Check out the League making sense. Just because you can kill a guy with a hit doesn't mean you should. I'm pleased. I might have made the suspension longer, but I'm pleased.

Let the the Shannahan era begin! I love the transparency and accountability these videos provide. Clearly explain the reasoning the mitigating factors and take out the speculation entirely. I really hope he keeps up with them. The nhl needs tough but fair sheriff to undo the damage Campbell did over his term and it looks like Shanny is stepping up to the plate.

As a follow-up to Shannahan's suspensions, Calgary GM Jay Feaster said:

I thought he was very thorough, very prepared in the hearing, when he called to explain his decision and his rationale, it was clear he had listened to people. I give him high marks.

edit: Flames GM, not Flyers GM. Interesting article though, take a look.

From that article - I know this was an issue some (myself included) were wondering about:

By the way, I am also told Shanahan plans to do some videos for other controversial plays that may not warrant suspensions. For example, he would have done one for the Zdeno Chara-Max Pacioretty incident. So that's another thing to look for this season.

The thread where we talk about how awesome Shanahan has been so far.

Here's his latest on Brad Boyes

NEW YORK –- Buffalo Sabres forward Brad Boyes has been suspended for two preseason games for an illegal hit to the head of Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joe Colborne during a preseason game on September 24, National Hockey League Senior Vice President of Player Safety Brendan Shanahan announced today.

That is fantastic. Clearly reasoned, looking at the play and how it developed, and giving clear, concise arguments for the punishment he put on Boyes.

Well done Shanny. And I fully expect that when Shanny next sees Matt Cooke he'll whip out a 9MM Browning and dump a dozen bullets into his skull.

It's sort of weird to feel good about punishments being doled out. It would be better if none were doled out because none were necessary, yeah? But still... feels good.

He's really doing an excellent job. He's showing the hit, how he sees what happened on the play, why the hit was illegal, and why he's giving a guy X games. We haven't played a single regular-season game yet and he's already ahead of the disciplinarians in the other sports. It's embarrassing how big an improvement this is over Colie Campbell.

I might actually talk myself into wearing this again...

I'm more excited for Brendan Shanahan videos than for the next episode of Breaking Bad. Yes, Soupy was just this incompetent of a hockey-dad-turned-judge/jury/executioner of player safety. Here's his video on Brad Staubitz's hit on Cody Bass:

I know I poked fun at it in the other thread, but this supertransparent system is all kinds of awesome. Long gone are the "where'd the dart land today?" jokes. The one thing I'm not looking forward to is the day we get a video of Shanny explaining a hit, wrapping up with, "I have decided to suspend [dumb player X] for the remaining 74 games of the regular season, as well as any playoff games his team may play."

Unless it's Matt Cooke.

I understand the Shanahan love and I completely agree with the videos being a ginormous step forward for the NHL but the Wisniewski suspension is the same one, minus the preseason games, (and really who gives a fuck about those) that the dart landed on in 2010, so I'm not sure he's being any more of a hard ass than his predecessor, he's just explaining things better.

For me this is 100% where the improvement lies. Occasionally the dart board was right, the way a broken clock is right twice a day. But Shanny's giving us an explanation why guys are getting what they got, and hopefully we'll get to the point where guys have a pretty good idea what they can expect when the make a dirty or reckless play. You certainly couldn't say that about Colie's dart board.

No on-ice confirmation from officials for one. For two, Campbell still handles these types of things. Shanny handles player safety. Calling someone a f***** doesn't fall under his jurisdiction.

I would love to know the backstory of these videos. If it was primarily Shanny's idea or a collaboration or what. It's simply brilliant. I think NHL refs, in general, do a very nice job compared to their counterparts in the other major sports but this adds some much-needed legitimacy at the operational level. The shadow government stuff and the half-measures just don't fly.

Shanny is paying these guys under the table to be sacrificial lambs to help legitimize the new regime. /tinfoil hat

Honestly though, I think it's probably not much different from any other preseason and we (fans and the league) are simply making a real effort to notice and fix the problem.
