Russell Martin said in a recent interview that he 'hates the Red Sox' and wants to eliminate them from the playoffs any way possible. Is it just 'the rivalry' or is Martin a super-douchebag? Is the answer yes for both questions? I would say yes.

I like it better when the players from these two teams hate each other. It bugs me when I see players joking around at second base with a guy who just hit a double.

2003/2004 was great because when they played you pretty much expected beanballs and benches being cleared.

Russell Martin got his fingernails painted on an ESPN segment. He will always be a douche (and a pretty big one at that).

The fact that Martin says this does absolutely nothing to MFY. It can only be used as bulletin board material by the Sox (although, I don't know if this team is beyond these comments lighting a fire under their ass as they've been so listless for so long).

Yea but Curt shat on Yankeedom before he was even a Red Sox. Russell Martin opening his trap now is just weird, maybe he is trying to earn some cool points in his locker room. His opinions are worthless though, I'd much rather if a bigger Yankee were to say this then it might mean something.

I thought about why he would say it with such conviction but in the end it doesn't matter. I want these teams talking trash about each other. The rivarly is boring and the games are 4hrs each, some spice wouldn't be terrible.

Sour grapes from Martin because the Red Sox had concerns about his health and weren't willing to guarantee him what the Yankees ended up doing. Since professional athletes always equate money with respect, you can see why Martin would have a grudge.

Well yes. But my point simply was that those kind of statements are the same bullshit no matter who says them.

At least if Jeter said it, it would feel like his feeling was borne out of 17 years of battles with the Sox. Russell Martin's sentiments do not feel earned at all in comparison.

To me it just says that Russell Martin doesn't understand True-Yankeedom©. He needs to not just talk trash, but to do something tangible, like picking a fight, preferably while in catcher gear, and he will really be one of the boys... or he could be amazing in October.
