Robinson Cano, AL MVP...just ask him

On the other hand, Ellsbury may have benefitted from having Pedroia and Gonzalez hitting behind him. It may have been easier to pitch arouind Gonzalez, especially after Youkilis got hurt.
LOL, I'm watching NY Boston right now and the Yankees has no problem pitching around Ellsbury with Crawford hitting behind him. So if you put Crawford in the 2-hole, my analysis falls apart.
Well, he had Youk AND Papi behind him for pretty much the entire season. Youk didn't start falling apart until August and Gonzalez had an extended period of poor hitting well before that point. I don't think this argument holds any water at all.
Look, I allowed you to pick the criteria by which we judge these guys and Ellsbury still came out on top. Now you're moving the goal posts with some qualitative babbling about line up protection. Your claim that Gonzalez is a credible candidate but Ellsbury is not has fallen apart. That you insisted Cano, who by every measure short of RBIs has had an inferior season when compared to Ellsbury, was a credible candidate makes your position laughable.

Well, we'll see who wins. If it is a member of the Red Sox, I would be shocked if Ellsbury is selected over Gonzalez.
Ellsbury not winning has zero bearing on this debate. You're arguing that he's not a legitimate candidate, but he can be a legitimate candidate and not win. He can even be a legitimate candidate and get beaten by Gonzalez. You've provided zero evidence to support your claim and saying "I'd be shocked if Ellsbury is selected over Gonzalez" is the intellectual equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and humming real loud.

Brick thinks Dwight Howard isn't a great basketball player. There's a pretty good chance he's not very smart.
Well, Dwight Howard doesn't have any rings... ergo...

The eyes have it. Thank god the game was carried on television.
Well, Snodgrass'Muff, I have to say that you (and others) were right and I was wrong. Ellsbury certainly played like an MVP over the weekend, and his HR in the 14th may have saved the Sox' season. I was seriously underrating Ellsbury.

Playoffs have nothing to do with the MVP voting since the ballots are cast before they start. Otherwise, fantastic analysis here.
Yes, if Ellsbury gets hot for the rest of the regular season-- and in the playoffs (assuming the Sox make it), then I would be more inclined to view him as a viable MVP candidate. While it would certainly be possible for any player to win the MVP with a monster statistical season, in my mind a "most valuable player" has to deliver when the games matter. Granderson delivered throughout August and through the first three weeks of September. That's when it mattered for the Yankees.
As to how the voters will view all of this, who knows?
As I posted in the game thread last night, I can't imagine how a guy batting .265 will win when there are comparable candidates hitting .304 (Cano), .322 (Ellsbury), .338 (Gonzalez) and .304 (Bautista). Yes, I know OBP is more important, but we're talking about MVP voters here, not highly advanced baseball minds.
I like this line from The Onion's write up
Just to be clear, I think Granderson has had a monster year and will probably win it. But I also think that if you think that Ellsbury doesn't deserve to be in the conversation then you are a fuckwad homer.

Well, look at OPS, OPS+ etc. Ellsbury has had a great year, but who would you rather face with the game on the line?
He came up mighty small yesterday, huh?

Writers love it when leadoff hitters go off.
