fuck the rules. no, seriously: fuck the rules. it's my birthday today and I'm calling on a little late september, good-to-be-alive mojo. I didn't want to start a game thread this season but it feels appropriate.

I'm pissed and I've been pissed for weeks now. I think we're all tired of this bullshit. the nonsense ends here. this team is better than this. do what you gotta do: roll into new york, sweep these clowns, and move onto fenway south to embarrass the birds.

the wild card is not up for grabs -- it's ours. it's not getting away from us. 2.5 games. that's as close as it's gonna get. the line must be drawn here. this far. no further.

it is on.
kill them all.

What's worse than the put-downs is your Yankee-fan husband being "kind" to you b/c the situation is so grim. Screw kindness! Win the damned ball-game!

With only a week left in the regular season, we're pretty familiar with these 2011 Boston Red Sox. They have a streaky, but very strong offense; a top-heavy, oft short-handed pitching staff; many of them are held together by tooth picks and chewed gum; they're no better at Fenway than they are elsewhere. But most of all, the one never-ending constant about this Red Sox team - they play their asses off against the Yankees and leave the wretched pinstriped wanks bloodied in their wake, especially at The Bidet. And so it comes to pass that this team descends into the smug, urine-drenched douchescape of the Bronx and remembers, "oh yeah, there are actually some fairly decent professional athletes in this organization; let's prove it."

I remember the last time I was this mad at the team. A few games against the Yankees is all it took to wipe that anger away. As it was in 2004, so it shall be in 2011.

It's the last day of cheering for the MFY's and now the Jay's. Let both Rays and Angels lose today. Pressure will be off and we can focus on humiliating the MFY's and their fans with a 45 year old pitcher on Saturday for our own amusement. Lester will obviously win tomorrow. It's in the bag, we got this.

Realistically they need to win 3 of their last 6 games. If they do that TB or LAA have to go 6-1 to win the WC. If the Sox go 4-2 TB has to win out.

I was on vacation in a place with no TV and limited cell connectivity for the past 2 weeks or so. Most mornings I'd wake up and go for a run on the beach and by coincidence there was a place during the run where my iphone worked so I would check the previous day's scoreboard. 4 days into the vacation I started leaving my phone at the house. Still, we'd go out to dinner and the scores would scroll by at the bottom of the screen at the bar. I had to look. Watching the ticker scroll by was like watching Grady Little do math or a Lady Gaga acceptance speech.

Anyway, that is all in the past. 2.5 games up with 6 games to play... I like our chances.

There is no quit in these Sox (well Crawford). We saw at the beginning of the year. I expect they will leave it all on the field, regardless of the outcome.

I just heard that Manny wants to play again. This is a good sign.

The meta physical discussion about not rooting for the Yankees REALLY, and rather rooting for the Rays to lose was, no doubt, fascinating for all.

But this is beter. This is pure. Red Sox win, Yankees lose. Neat and clean.

Boston Nine: Ground NY into dust, injure them and their women, win on Friday night and stop this madness.

Enough is indeed enough.

Ash escaped The Evil Dead, returned inexplicably in The Evil Dead 2, and conquered the Army of Darkness.

Can we make Bruce Campbell proud and earn his finger point? Can we defeat our own Army of Darkness? Is that allowed? Will one of our starters get a Quality Start ever again?

Fucking win.

Just once I want to see the Yankees experience a late season 2006 Sox-esque, ambulance inducing, nightmare collapse that destroys their post-season. I want to see a re-enactment of the civil war throughout this series. I want Gimpy Jeter, "Oh Noes Elbow" Rivera ...

I want the Bronx Zoo and I want it more than Cameron Diaz wants the cure for Ellen Barken Face Syndrome. Embarrass them. Conquer them. And if the Sox need motivational locker room speeches then please do better than Rick Flair. I would have preferred the ghost of Red Foxx:

"Man, I haven't seen so many banged up, crying white b***es since Wilt Chamberlain snuck into the Laker cheerleader dressing room. Stand up, get on that field and win the game, dummies!"

Let me ask you this: what year haven't the Sox caused a bit of a scare? These little hiccups aren't just what make the Sox so awful to love, they are what make us the most begrudging, abused, exhausted fans in baseball.

But they also, at the end of the day, make us the most faithful. I've been pissed the fuck off with this team this month, just like the rest of you...but I've also been in love with the same group of assholes at other points. When Pedey was dubbed the Muddy Chicken in that long ass game, the first time Adrian Gonzalez laced one off the Monster. Realizing Ortiz wasn't going to suck this year. Reddick knocking that shot down the RF line against the MFYs after they IBBd to get to him.

I have been elated far more than I've been pissed, and I know that that is the team that will deliver a WC entry for us in 2011. They are in a funk, but we loved them. We love them.

Baseball is a game of beautiful dichotomies, parallels, coincidences, etc, and so I'm holding onto this:

Our first win this year came against the MFYs. We won that series, and it righted the ship. Our boys had to face their demons to get on the right track, and they did it. What unfolded was one of the finest seasons I've watched.

Here we are again, end of the season, same bad streak, and same demons to tackle.

Let's right the ship this series. Right this ship, you lovable sons of bitches.

Hey Lester, just pitch well. As the CHB accurately pointed out this morning, neither Beckett or Lester have given the Sox ace like performances and with the dreck on the rest of the staff, they absolutely need to step up. Russell Martin is a cheeseball footnote who should be ignored.

WIN . . .or go home. Yes, its a marketing cliche for another sport, but you're pretty darn close. Jon - whatever's been ailing you, work through it and kick ass - time for another gutsy, if not dominant, win. Guys, get your freaking acts together, get some fire in your belly, get the backs of your teammates, and get those MFYs by any means possible.

GO SOX - WIN TONIGHT!

Mike Aviles (11 PA): .636 BA/.636 OBP/.909 SLG; 1 HR
Marco Scutaro (15): .533 BA/.533 OBP/.867 SLG; 2 triples

Left side is righteous.
