I need to take a shower after rooting for the MFYs.

Out out damned spot. I'll never get this stink off of me.

I am now revolted at myself on multiple levels.

You know what feels weird? Rooting for a team that's only allowed 2 runs through 8 innings.

Unfortunately, even if the Sox make the playoffs, I don't see many games in which this staff allows only 4 or 5 runs through 8. I hope the Sox make the playoffs even if backing in but I don't have any excitement that they'll go beyond the ALDS.

I see at least 2 out of 5. As inconsistent as Jon Lester can be, he's still a legitimate horse.

Of course, if Josh Beckett has any lingering issues, all bets are off.

Sox are 3-4 in Bedard's starts. How many do you think they would've won with somebody worse than Kyle Weiland or John Lackey starting in his place? He's literally the difference between us and Tampa right now.

This has a reasonably good chance of being an awesome day for the Sox. Yanks came back and gave the Rays a serious nut-punch loss and have CC going tonight for win #20. And the Sox have JFB going tonight against another schlep pitcher from Baltimore.

I know weird stuff has been happening lately, but I think we are looking at a 3 1/2 game lead over Tampa by the end of tonight's action.

Yes, but six of their 11 wins this month were handed over by the Sox. Neither is selfish enough to take it.

I was really rooting for asteroids to crash into both dugouts, but that's like rooting for Lackey to throw a complete game shutout.

Heh. Yeah, I hear you. But then again, Lackey, just six weeks ago, beat the Yanks 10-4 by putting up 6 innings of 3 run ball. If he can do that again, I like the Sox' chances against Nova.

I would have settled for a mummified Munson taking out his little two seater one more time.

If you're going to root for the MFY, you did it in the most dignified way. Well done. Also, it would be more like asking Lackey to go 5.1 IP, 5ER, 8 H, 4 BB and a post game comment of "I kept us in the game, just a few bad pitches...". That's about the equivalent of anybody else's CG SO.

BTW, how do Rays' fans feel right now? Knowing they go up against CC tonight, still down 2 games to the Sox, ahead 2-1 in the 8th inning, and then the roof caves in and they lose. Talk about a kick to the groin.

And, no, I don't pity them.

I know this month has been about as far away from "best case scenario" as possible, but a smide of encouraging news from Tito on Buchholz that might actually contribute to a win. Or something.

After Sunday we have three games against Baltimore and Tampa has three games against New York. The Magic Number is 6. You would pretty much have to have EVERY SINGLE GAME go the wrong way in order to make Sunday one of those almost but not quite must win games.

So sure, if we need a win on Sunday Aceves is 90% to start. That's about a 5% chance or so. There's a pretty good chance that seven hours from now the magic number is 4.

As excruciating as this whole stretch has been, I think my personal "rock bottom" was having to endure Saturday's several-minute-long Fox splooge-fest over what a swell job Maddon had done cultivating a fun atmosphere in which it was easy for the players to bond. Pajama parties and everything! Damon loves it cuz he never went to college, and this is what it musta been like!

I love baseball. I love everything about the game. Watching a baseball game is my favorite thing to do on this planet. The past month has sucked. Still, shitty baseball is better than no baseball at all. I want this season to last as long as possible. I want to have a game to look forward to for the next few weeks. I am not ready to see the 2011 season come to an abrupt, horrid end. I am not ready to see BoSoxLady's "Green Fields of the Mind" thread. Not yet. There's baseball tonight, and the Red Sox have Josh Beckett on the mound. The winning starts tonight. I will be watching. Amen.

My personal Red Sox 2011 rock bottom is today. Fucking September 21 and I have to root for the Yankees to put us away for the division title.

Whatever happens the rest of the way, unless it involves a pennant, I can't see forgiving this team for doing that to us until the offseason is well under way.

I can only imagine this (thank God for blackouts):

Joe Buck's Brad Garrett voice droning: "Oh, now that's what this game is supposed to be like! This is how the game was meant to be! (Insert any dig at Manny Ramirez that he tries to work back to the initial point of the genius idiocy of Joe Maddon)."

Then McCarver starts in: "Ya know...Joe...Back in the mid 60's I had an idea for something like this. However....Bob Gibson was not very inclined, so the idea was aborted. But...I'm glad to see that someone like Joe Maddon embodies the good-natured fun that this game deserves...(Insert another long diatribe about hating Manny Ramirez. McCarver doesn't try to work his remark back on point)."

Also, Damon must have envisioned college being like kindercare or some sort of daycare service.

REM moves on to the Great Beyond. The Red Sox will move on to the playoffs, even though right now it feels like we're pushing an elephant up the stairs.

What a pick up

It could be a strategic decision regardless of his injury situation. If Bedard has one more warm-up start, it's just as well that it not be against the Yankees who might face him in the playoffs. He might get a small advantage for unfamiliarity in recent years.

BTW, how do Rays' fans feel right now?

Both of them are feeling pretty low right now.

But you see..the thing about rock bottom is that it is the lowest point. Just like I wiped my ass with that old Subway napkin and limped back upstairs to write this, the Red Sox will pick themselves up tomorrow and wipe their ass with Tommy Hunter. Beckett will go 7+ strong.

As the graduate of a NOLS course and Master of Leave No Trace camping... I have used a rock on my bottom. It's not so bad. And it's nothing like getting a rock shoved up your bottom, which is what the Red Sox will do to this team of assholes tonight.

Win so hard you leave no trace.

You're discounting his fielding. Since the all-star break, when runners have attempted to steal from first base, they have advanced to third on a poor throw less than half the time. In fact, I think he's giving up only about 1.25 bases per steal attempt.

You might wish to see tomorrow's release of Moneyball to get a bit more sophisticated in analyzing player value. And remember, nobody's perfect.

This is why I was hoping they would try to work Salty in with Beckett to see if they could make it work. On the bright side, Detroit is dead last in SB if they end up being the ALDS opponent.
