Good game, all. It looked bleak at the beginning, we got a few breaks in the middle, and held on at the end. hopefully the season ends up the same way.

Great win but in all the euphoria let's not forget that Bogar could have cost us this game.
When are the Red Sox going to deal with this glaring problem? I hope before he costs us a really important game.

Not going to a gassed Beckett to start the 7th, Salty pitching hitting in the bottom of the 6th. Papelbon warming in the 8th inning. Playoff Tito!

And if Playoff Tito had shown up two weeks ago we would have already clinched a playoff spot and we wouldn't need to go through this.

How, by pitching Papelbon every night for a complete game? Come on. The team's funk has been the result of bad injuries, John Lackey being John Lackey and a bad stretch from Bard, not Tito refusing to be Tony LaRussa like Maddon was tonight.

As flawed as this team seems to be, there is no monster in the AL. They can win the pennant on the back of Beckett/Lester/Aceves/Bard/Papelbon and the offense.

DeWayne Staat talks about the Rays as the greatest, most exciting team in baseball. Which is fine except for the fact that he's been doing it since they were a last place team. He'd be great for the Yankees.

Fuck.

Dewayne Stats actually did announce Yankees games on MSG in the early 90's (Stump Merrill "error") with Tony Kubek. Stats was brutal then and is brutal now.

I'm still feeling a huge start by Bedard in the playoffs where he completely sacks up and shuts down the opposition when nobody is really expecting it.

Thank the maker. Tomorrow Lester needs to be Jon F. Lester, not Daisuke Matsuzaka.

His pitch count is already at 35. I kid, I kid. The big question is - can the offense get timely hits two games in a row? We haven't seen it in weeks. I trust Lester to do his part.

You have to hand it to Jonathan Papelbon. He carried his nuts around in a wheelbarrow and insisted that he was going to set the market for closers. He gambled on himself and eschewed many a lucrative long-term extension to take his chances in arbitration. He's been all about maximizing every last dollar, and in order to do that he had to be absolute nails this season. What does the motherf*cker go out and do? He's absolute nails. Papelbon knew the entire baseball world was watching tonight, and he flat-out blew away the best the Rays had to offer. Meanwhile, the assumed closer in waiting has turned into a highwire act.

I was more than ready to let Papalbon walk, but I've come around. Pay dat man. Pay dat man heez mahney.

How the hell is this thread not 100 pages? We should be ashamed of ourselves.

Well, after being away from the computer tonight, I'll now make my tardy contribution: that game was a helluva fun. A one-run game that matters is inherently dramatic, and that one was particularly so.

It ain't The Red Seat, but blasting a hole in the sign over the wall (for the game-winning run, at that) is pretty darn cool.

Great to see Bard's command return and be able to set up Papelbon for the ninth.

He got it together, but remember, he really hit the first batter and walked the second one. If the ump hadn't (probably mistakenly) called Damon out on the HBP, the inning would have started off with two on and nobody out. We all would have seen a double steal, and then the Rays would have had runners at 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. I think we'd have seen Bard's outing in a little different light there.

But hey, it all worked out, and if this gives Bard confidence moving forward, that's great, great news. And Papelbon was unbelievable.
