That's Ellsbury's ball, he backed off a bit when he saw McDonald.
This team has a shitty outfield defense. They do miss the old man out there.

Well that is a spirit breaker. Let's not walk their best player.

Bard is next year's closer???? If so then next year will be even crappier than this September. If they don't start hitting ASAP they are done and will be watching the playoffs from their living rooms.

So not only do the Sox lose, Paps likely not available tomorrow, but bard takes another hit to his confidence. Just about everything that could have gone wrong tonight did.
The way this team is playing right now they shouldn't be in the playoffs whether they make it or not. They'd just be wasting a slot for a team that might show up and give a damn about the game.

Since this streak started on 8/30, a total of two quality starts in twelve games.

Thankfully, there are only 17 games left.I'm confident Lester comes up big tomorrow. Big Game James won't live up to the name. Still up 4.5 with 27 to play.

This might be the most accurate assessment of the Sox that I've read recently. What a fucking joke of a team right now. This team looks like LeBron in the fourth quarter.

Why wouldn't he walked the bases loaded?

I'm a huge Tito fan, but he's done some really strange things this season. He doesn't seem to manage the game in the way that other managers we may hate and/or resent do. Maddon, Leyland, other managers seem to do more strategizing than Francona. At least in the regular season. Or at least that is how it seems to me.

So not only did they lose, but now they have no closer for tomorrow.
Could not have gone worse.

In fairness, that's the total number of quality starting pitchers the Sox have in total, unless you count the walking injury known as Erik Bedard.
Posted 10 September 2011 - 10:20 PM
Why wouldn't they have a closer tomorrow? Papelbon threw 16 pitches. I assume the only reason to take him out at that point was so that you'd be sure to have a closer tomorrow.

Why would you walk the bases loaded? Bard is a strikeout pitcher. He gets a strikeout of Longoria (or a linedrive, pop-out, grounder to 3b, etc) than you have a lot of options. If you walk the bases loaded, you have zero margin of error, not ideal for a guy who can struggle with his control. You walk the bases loaded if you've got a shitty pitcher (or a groundball pitcher); not someone like Bard.

Fourth series loss in a row. Yikes.
Posted 10 September 2011 - 10:23 PM
And Bedard gave them one of those QS.
More concerning, they've held their opponents under five runs only three times during that stretch. Two of those three games were losses.
Posted 10 September 2011 - 10:24 PM
It is really unlikely they will win tomorrow.
But I think that will be the low water mark. Losing 9 of 12 is bad, but the '78ers lost 14 of 17. This team is banged up and has its starting pitching issues like that team did, but not as severely. I think they'll get through this - it is a terrible road trip even with a win tomorrow. But if Tampa gets within 2 in the loss column after this series, then I reserve the right to change my mind about all of this.
And whoever was bitching concerning my observations about the Yankees squaring up Bard in that series for two nights in a row - a big hello to you! I didn't want to be on to something there, but I was.

He's got to walk Longoria. I'm not sure about loading the bases, but why let their best hitter beat you with zero downside to putting him on base? And you create the possible upside of a double play?
