I love that they scored three runs, but... is there a list someplace of how many outs each team has made on the basepaths this season? I wonder where the Red Sox would place on that list. It sure feels as if they've run into an extraordinary number of outs this year.

Baserunning has not been a strong suit the last few years, and that's putting it gently.
On the other hand, they have a lot more opportunities to screw up on the bases, and that's a good thing.

I think the problem is that Wakefield doesn't realize this could be his 200th win.

This is not going well so far. Still could pull this inning out of his ass, but I think a run or two or the more likely outcomes.

Do you think it bothers pitchers that Salty never seems to present a target? I was always lead to believe that giving a pitcher a good target to throw to is a very important part of catching.

Granted, I was in Little League, and these guys are pros, but watching Salty he seems to put his glove up much later than most other catchers (and after it would look to be of any use to the pitcher as a guide).

His timing looks off and his pitch identification pretty bad, but I don't see the bat speed loss.

Indeed, Papi "lost bat speed" two years ago too.

Worst position player contract in baseball? A-rod's may be worse... But given the length and money owed, if Crawford's isn't the worst, it is certainly near the top.

I would ship him and 24 million to the Angels in a heartbeat.

It was one of the worst position player contracts in baseball before the season started. Now it's just laughable. You would need to ship $124 million to the Angels to gamble that he might someday stop playing like a quadriplegic.

I liked Reddick's decision there. The difference between a runner on second and a runner on third is not huge, but goes up significantly with a knuckleballer on the mound.

He gotten squeezed on a couple, but a lot of them are typical low strikes that Wakefield never gets the call on. He typically gets high strikes even above the strike zone.

Even though he's not having a nightmare year, I still think the Werth contract is still worse.

No worries! Wake's got this, just keep adding up the runs n our side and we'll be fine. He wasn't gonna shut them out, so a run here and there is to be expected ye of little faith!

I could not agree more. I just do not understand why Boston free agent signings have been so bad the last few years.

The Angels won't trade for an overpaid, over-the-hill player with 6 years remaining on his contract. Now, call back 2 years later, and you might get talent in the trade.

Fair point. Add him to the short list, as that signing was inexplicable at the time. As for the point about Vernon Wells, the Angels are clearly no strangers to mind-boggling moves (including their unfortunate PR stunt of a team name). I suppose there is hope. Unfortunately, I think I'll be stuck watching Crawford botch Fenway flies and flail helplessly at pitches to the tune of a .720 OPS for six more $20+ million seasons.

The strike zone seems to be pretty wide tonight. That favors the hard thrower and disadvantages the knuckleballer, right?

Meh. The Angels have done some pretty dumb things in the past. The Greater Fool Theory applies to baseball.

Theo has been known to cut his losses if the fit isn't good. I liked Edgar Renteria, and wanted him to get another season with the team.
