Now THAT, was a fitting way to end the game.

Aviles slid about 5 feet too soon, almost didnt even reach 2nd. what a joke

Feel free to defend him all you want. This time or the next time he fucks up big time. Which will be in about four games or so.

I don't need to defend him. His record speaks for itself... reactionary bullshit posts aside.

That said, that was an absolutely awful way to end the game. Fuck.

I'm not one to rip into Francona, but leaving Bard in to walk in the 2nd run was beyond stupid.

I literally cannot believe the Red Sox have ended three losses on pinch runner baserunning mistakes.

Also, I think they should cut Aviles. Nothing good has happened since he joined and he's not that good (unlike Bedard). Clearly he pissed off someone on BABIP Olympus.

His record, or the roster's record? You think whatever "average" manager you pull out of the sky would be that much worse as far as W/L goes?

I remember a game about a month or so ago when we were down by a run or two, Crawford was on first, no outs or one out, and Tito didn't send him. Two outs, two strikes, down by one, momentum building, and they send that jackass. What the fuck? Is Scutaro really slow enough that he needs a pinch runner? I mean what the fuck?

On the flip side, he has had ridiculously talented teams. There are a plenty of managers that could have won it all with what he had to work with in the years they won. I'm not commenting on his abilities as a manager at all, but it's worth noting that his deck has been pretty stacked since day one.

Awesome ending.

Just about everything about that game was fucked up.

But...I've decided Tim Wakefield needs my concern about as much as Greg Norman did back when I got all worked up when he lost the majors. He's probably got, what, 20 mill in the bank, at least. I'm gonna let him work it out without quite so much of my gut churning, which didn't seem to do any good for him anyway.

Sheesh.

I'm very interested to hear Tito's take on that last spectacular play. Francisco sucking wind and the attempted steal bails him out...

Go ahead folks defend that call to steal by Francona. Please. Have at it.
We cannot afford that kind of in game managing in the middle of a pennant race...and mark my words this coaching problem will come back to haunt us at a time far more important than this.

For all the drama about Wakefield and the horrible outing by Bard and the terrible managing, this was a one-run game. The Sox offense was clicking tonight -- 14 hits and 10 runs, yet they made 3 outs on the bases. On the other side, they gave away a run on defense. Can't do those things in a one-run game.

This team has been pretty poor lately. If they hit the crap out of the ball, they are in ok shape. Otherwise, in a close game, they give away too much.

Who called that steal? Out by a mile.

There really should be someone in the organization whose job it is to make calls on what to do. When to pull a pitchers who does not have good stuff. Who to bring in to replace him. When to call for a steal.
Wait, what? There is? You mean the bald guy with the glasses?

They should have had Papelbon ready to face Bautista. The chances of Bard getting him out there were laughably small. Why couldn't Tito see it coming to this. Was Albers the best we could get out there over a 36 pitch evolving disaster?

Where will the PR duo of Mike Aviles and Darnell McDonald wind up in the pantheon of suck?

Aviles is barely a marginal upgrade. Got out of my film class early to see that. What a joke.

Also, where are we going with this bullpen?

Paps should have been warming once it was bases loaded and nobody out. Agreed. I do not understand Albers there. You bring Paps in once Bard couldn't get that 3rd out and made it 8-7. But they seem completely against a Papelbon 4 out save this year. Has he had even one? I cannot recall, but perhaps he did.

The concern about Wake is ridiculous, he pitched like shit as he usually does. Wheeler has been mediocre as he's been put in bigger spots, Bard had a rare hiccup and Albers continued to poop his pants upon taking the mound. With Beckett and Bedard hurt, there reason to be worried. Ridiculous to be 10 games worse than the Yankees exclusive head to head. Or, perhaps this team is lucky to be where they are considering how many starts they've given to awful pitchers.

The same way Bob Brenly's record did? Or Ozzie Guillen's does? Or, dare I say it- Grady's record did till that last game?
The ugly truth of the Red Sox is that if you give anyone manager in baseball half an all star team and they probably get them to the playoffs pretty regularly.
You give this team to Bruce Bochy, Or Madden, or Jim Leyland from about a decade ago and they're up on the MFY by four games right now. And likely have another ring.
