I'm testing out a system based on the yahoo closing lines in their pick'em game. Yahoo gives you the percentages of everyone else's picks and uses final lines the day before the first game. So for week 1 it will be today's lines, but these are according to yahoo. Below is going against the popular yahoo pick.
Saints +4.5 @ Packers
Steelers +2.5 @ Ravens
Lions +2 @ Bucs
Falcons -3 @ Bears
Bills +6 @ Chiefs
Colts +8.5 @ Texans
Eagles -5 @ Rams
Bengals +6.5 @ Browns
Titans +2 @ Jaguars
Giants -3@ Redskins
Panthers +7 @ Cardinals
Seahawks +5.5 @ 49ers
Vikings +8.5 @ Chargers
Cowboys +4.5@ Jets
Patriots -7 @ Dolphins
Raiders +3 @ Broncos
I know you have to play as system as a system and can't cherry pick. But for anyone interested in the second listed game, take a look at this --
http://profootballta...etting-thinner/,
and this -- http://profootballta...ainst-steelers/
Oh yeah, and Suggs is running his effing mouth again, attributing the Steelers recent 6 - 2 record against the Ravens to "luck".
I say this with no joy, as I'm a Ravens tix holder, but there is NO way I'm giving the Steelers any points in this game. The first factor, the Ravens' o-line, is particularly significant; they have added 3 major pieces in about the last 2 weeks. Flacco is Bledsoe-esque under pressure, and if the Ravens have to play from behind (see second link), it figures to be a butt ugly game.

I used old lines, but oh well. 8-6 so far, I'd take a 10-6 first week. With that said, I'm changing my Pats/Phins bet. I don't know why I highlighted the Dolphins, but I think the Pats win by more then 7, so....yeah.

I used Bowiac's even older lines, and 9-5 going into tonight. I'm hating that Broncos pick though. If we can swap out, I'll take Oakland at either of the two lines, +3 or even. I think they win outright.

I'm thinking about going all in with the rest of my bankroll for the following:
- 7 Point Tease: NE 0, Over 39
- MIA +280
Money split so that if MIA wins, I only make $2.50. Small, but it's a gain.
The only way I can see losing is if NE wins the game under 39 points but I just don't see it being that low scoring. Thoughts?

Philly -4.5;
Detroit +1.5;
Blue Jays -1.5 against the Sox and Andrew Miller last week;
with:
Patriots -7,
you'd be reasonably optimistic going into tonight, no?

Hypothetically speaking, if you parlayed:

Detroit +1.5;
Blue Jays -1.5 against the Sox and Andrew Miller last week;
with:
Patriots -7,
you'd be reasonably optimistic going into tonight, no?
Come on, Brady. "Cry, 'Havoc!' and let slip the hogs of war."
Yesterday I may have parlayed Eagles -3.5 with Nationals -1.5 and Rangers -1.5, too. This week doesn't suck.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but don't most west coast teams fly in earlier the day before just for this reason? Like - they'll hold their Saturday walkthrough in the hotel.
Yes, they do, but I imagine they are all sitting in their rooms at 11PM EST trying to fall asleep because their bodies are on west coast time. Nothing a beer or six can't solve. Perhaps the Bills are the better bet.

Because the Chiefs aren't that good. They have suffered two big injuries already. They also don't have top end talent at skill positions.

I actually really like the Falcons +3, the Falcons are a really good team, playing at home with something to prove after getting beat up by the bears. Additionally the Falcons have the personnel to run the ball effectively against the Eagles. Eagles are susceptible to physical teams willing the run the ball inside, I love the Falcons with the points here and expect Turner to have a big day.
As far as the Lions go, I obviously like them to win but I feel that 9 is probably 3 points too high for that spread.

How did the Chiefs become a terrible football team?
My gut reaction is the same as Myt1, but they just looked SO bad in Week 1 and the entire preseason. The Moeaki injury,loss of Waters and especially the week 1 injury to Berry hurts, but I wouldn't expect it to be this much of a change from last year.
Is it mostly Charlie Weis? The offense didn't look good at all in the playoff game after the announcement and was a joke vs the Bills. Other theories?

They really overachieved last year. They were absolutely primed for regression. Take a look a The Final DVOA Rankings for 2010 . In raw DVOA, they were 17th in the league. In weighted DVOA, they fell to 25th. They rode an incredible season by Jamaal Charles and some memorable Dwayne Bowe games (although he was pretty inconsistent throughout the year). They had some luck with turnover ratio (some of that accounted for by the fact that Cassell doesn't throw a lot of picks, but not all), and rode a pretty easy schedule to a playoff berth. They were ready to drop even without the loss of Waters, Moeaki, and Eric Berry. While some of that regression should have been cut by improvement to the younger players, losing a pair of the key ones is a problem. This is a team that could be headed for 5-11 or 6-10.

Why are the Pats getting 7? I know they looked good last week, but the Chargers can score, play good defense, etc. Is it simply to sucker in NE bettors? The "west coast team coming east" thing?
Would the Pats really be 1 point faves if this game was in SD?
I don't know...seems like a big line to me.
You are making the mistake of thinking betting lines take mostly football performance in consideration. They are just trying to maximize money gained by predicting on which team people will bet. Even at -7 I'd imagine the vast majority of bets will be placed on the Patriots.

Betting lines take mostly football performance into consideration. It's not the only thing they look at, but it's the biggest thing they look at. If they offered an unfair line that the public was still thrilled with, they would just be inviting bettors with much bigger bankrolls than the public has to bet the other direction.You are making the mistake of thinking betting lines take mostly football performance in consideration. Vegas lines aren't "right", but they're rarely off by more than a point or two from where they should be.

This strikes me as right -- but I don't consider myself very savvy in this area.
Put differently, *Vegas always wins*, at least when it evens the money out on both sides. That's the foundation.
But it likes *big money* and makes it when lines too good to be true (from the bettor's perspective) turn out that way. That's where the football judgment, inside skinny and other stuff comes in. The other side of this coin is when Vegas, on occasion, gets whipped.
Is this basically correct?
