[font=Verdana, Arial, sans-serif][size=2]"I have a lot of faith in Jacoby Ellsbury," said Pesky. "I think he could be a real good one. If he was 10 pounds bigger he could be, I keep saying it and people tell me I'm full of bull, he could be the next Ted Williams. He has that kind of ability. He's not as big as Ted. He doesn't run as good as Ted.

I hadn't seen this quote until the game thread tonight. Kinda speechless. I'm young, and I need the elder crowd to set me straight. This is the craziest thing ever said on the record, right?

Pesky also thought Teddy Ballgame was an awesome fielder and an amazing cuddler.

Well, Williams is one of two players to steal a bag in four decades.

Pesky is like what about 125 years old? Granted he knew Ted however that was a long time ago and Jacoby has a long ways to go before he gets lumped with Ted Williams. That being said, he's off to a helluva start and I wish him well!!!!! Take what he says with a grain of salt.

He meant Teddy could really fly.

So there you go.

Literally, he flew. But that has little to do with baseball.

In a non-Pesky reality, Williams had 24 SB to 17 CS in his career.

Having watched both Ted and Pesky I would suggest that he meant to say, "Ted could really walk." pun intended

Adrian Beltre is Jacoby's Korean War. Years from now, looking over Jacoby's career numbers, I'll be telling my grandkids to imagine what those numbers might look like if Beltre wasn't out hunting ribs that season.

He was either joking or senile. Also, that quote is from two and a half years ago.

Adrian Beltre is Jacoby's Korean War.

Fantastic!

Is it possible that Pesky was referring to baserunning intelligence rather than speed? Though I'm old enough to have witnessed the tail end of Williams' career (mostly on TV), I don't remember anything at all about that aspect of his game. I've seen enough Ellsbury gaffes on the basepaths, however, to find it entirely plausible that Williams was the smarter baserunner.

I think Pesky meant to say that Ted had a better arm but couldn't ran as well, and just got confused and said it reversed.

No Pesky loved Williams. Seriously probably bagged William's shit and bathed in it. In Pesky's mind Ted Williams was the exact image of God.

Yeah, and out of respect for an old man, the reporter should have fixed it. The idea Jacoby threw better than Ted is almost as silly as the running thing.

Not exactly. If you read some of the biographies, Pesky was not as strong willed as Doerr, but he didn't idolize Ted. Including a guy with 3/4 of season where he is hitting with ops+ of 138 with a Ted who had only one season (when he was hurt at age 40) under 1.000 seems is he giving his unbridled love to Jacoby.

I would assume these comments will be heavily featured in Scott Boras' upcoming guide to the greatness of Jacoby Ellsbury. The only thing that makes Ellsbury's season slightly bitter-sweet is the worry about his long-term contract future.
