FYI - beta 6 is out as an OTA update.

Worked cleanly for me on my 3GS. Didn't need to erase settings or anything.

My wifi syncing hadn't been working properly every time before the patch, but with the new iOS and the new iTunes it seems to be flawless now. It would give me weird errors sometimes before about not being able to copy 1 or 2 files.

Glorious; thank you. Beta 6 worked without a hitch with my 3gs as well. Nice to just wake up and look at the phone and just accept an update.

I would have thought that Apple would have announced the new Iphone by now if by what we have heard that they intend to release the new phone in September. Do they plan on announcing it and releasing it like the next day?

Right now, the rumors are Apple will start pre-orders near the end of September, with the release date around October 7th - 14th. Although, given it's Apple we're talking about, who knows...

To not create a new thread ... does anyone have a spare ATT iPhone? My wife's is currently drying out after getting soaked in a sink yesterday; it has yet to turn on. We're going to be moving over to VZ at some point, but had wanted to wait until the 5 comes out before making the switch. If anyone has a spare 3G or higher (her phone was a 3G) than we can buy/rent/borrow for the next month, that would be fantastic. More than willing to return it once we hop over to Verizon in October.

This is a Technology User Darwin Award question, and I preface this by saying that in spite of the following, my husband is really quite smart.
However: We both just got IP4 to replace our antique original IP models. (We were trying to wait for the IP5, but a terminal drowning occurred.) The husband has never, ever synched or backed up his iPhone. Didn't even have an iTunes account, which made it hard to get all his stuff onto the new phone. The sales guy ported over his photos and contacts, but said he couldn't do things like Notes or calendar. So my husband decided to create an itunes account, synch the old phone, and then synch the new one. I don't know what the hell happened, but he didn't create a new account, but rather was logged onto my account. His old phone was synched using my data--all my apps, calendar, contacts, etc.
Is there any way to restore the phone back to its previous settings so he can get his notes and calendar onto the new phone? Would restoring it to its original settings work?

Yes. You will have to rejailbreak. However, I believe that if you sync then jailbreak then sync, everything re-syncs. Only like 90% sure, though.

No, this will reset to factory settings and wipe everything.

There should be a "backup" that was created in iTunes when he accidentally synced his phone with your account. He should be able to restore from that, but I'm not at a computer where so I can't walk you all the way through it. I believe the correct sequence is to plug the phone in (turn off automatic syncing before you do this just to be safe) and then right click on "Hildy's husband's iPhone" on the right menu bar and click "restore from backup." As long as you haven't synced your phone between his little error, it should be the most recent backup available. Then let it restore and see if everything comes back.

The iOS 5 demo on the 3GS was interesting. As I have one, I'm disappointed that the location task reminders is disabled on the 3GS -- I'd been looking forward to that feature ever since I used the Reqall app. The idea that you can, say, be reminded to pick up herpes cream or jimmy hats as you walk past the drug store on the way is game-changingly awesome.

I stopped receiving gmail e-mails in my inbox on my iPhone. When I try to retrieve them it looks for the e-mails and then eventually says, "Cannot Get Mail. The e-mail server 'imap.gmail.com' is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings."

I've downloaded the Gmail app in the meantime, but does anyone know how to fix this? In Settings>Mail>Gmail>Account>Advanced>IMAP Path Prefix, it's currently blank. Is that where I have to fix it? If so, what do I type in that field?

Yeah, I've had this happen in the past. Remove your gmail account on your phone and re-add it. That's done it for me at least.

That's happened to me before (pretty sporadically); it usually goes away after an hour or so. Just keep the app as a backup.

It's possibly an issue on the Gmail side as my friend has relatively frequent, similar issues on his Evo Shift 4G.

The same thing happened to my mother in law, who was visiting us from out of town this past weekend. Deleting and re-adding her gmail account didn't fix it. Googling around I saw someone recommend connecting via wifi and that did the trick.

A question about photo storage.

My wife has an iPhone, and we have a PC for our home computer.

What she would like is to have a dedicated folder of pictures on her phone that remain constant, but would like any photos she takes with the phone to be synced to our photo library on the PC when she updates her phone.

Ideally, there would be two folders......one with the dedicated collection of photos, and the other that is comprised of new photos taken with the phone and which uploads the new photos when there is a sync.

This is probably easier to do than I can see. But........little help?

What version of Windows are you running? Windows 7 gives a pop up every time you plug a device into your computer. For the iPhone (or any camera) the last option is "import pictures." On that import pictures menu, there is a box you can check off that says "only import new photos."

The asterik attached to this is that sometimes Windows plays games or you might have clicked the "don't show me this again." If it doesn't pop up, go to my computer and click your iPhone. From there, if you right click it, you might be able to click autoplay which will bring that box up again. If it doesn't come up, just look on the left side for an "import" option.

Yep, when you go to the iphone's settings in iTunes, under the photo tab you can specify a folder for images you always want stored on the iPhone. I do that for all the background images I keep on the phone.

Scrolling to the top of the text window and tapping "load earlier messages" doesn't work?

I'm pretty sure the iPhone stores texts indefinitely, so they should be there. There exists software to pull them from the phone in some form of text file, but if you can't get at them on your phone, it's unlikely they are secretly hidden and can be unlocked -- they probably are just gone.

You must send a metric ton of texts-- I was just able to scroll back a year and a half with the czarette and nothing has stopped me yet.

There's a program in the app store called SMS Export that purports to make life easy-- never tried it, but you can look into it.

I used to use Phoneview way back when I first got my iPhone (2007) but it's not freeware anymore. But there should be plenty of software floating around to help you (a good bet might be to go through YouTube and search "export SMS iphone" or something-- you'll probably get a couple how-to's with freeware/shareware there).

You must have deleted them, because I'm able to load earlier messages until I get to ones from my original iPhone in 2007, even with people I text multiple times per week. The 2 times I've upgraded my iPhone since the original one, I've just restored the new one from the backup, so I still have all of my text messages from the last 5 years.

Probably not-- the only place I could fathom them being is that they might be extractable from a backup on your hard drive. I don't know first-hand how to do this, but someone at MacRumors or any of the other major Apple forums could probably tell you in a heartbeat.

It's murky as to whether cell companies A) keep text messages (and how long) and B) are legally allowed to give them to people -- you'd probably have to lawyer up to try and get at what they have, so it's really not worth it.

I have a friend who is looking to upgrade from her old Verizon Blackberry to an iPhone. She has 2 questions:

1) What is the most economical way to do it? Do places like Best Buy give you a better deal than the Verizon store?
2) Is getting an iPhone 4s worth it over an iPhone?

2) 4s gets you Siri, better camera, faster processor, and a bit more future proof than the 4.

1) AmazonWireless often has good deals, but iPhones are largely fixed-price. If she's willing to go refurb she might be able to shave some $50 off the cost.

2) Depends on usage. iPhone 4 is absolutely competent. It does have a better processor and is somewhat more future-proof. While people say 4S has a "better" camera (8 MP vs. 5 MP), I argue that it has similar camera - the size of the sensor is the same as the one on iPhone 4 which means the amount of light data each pixel gets is smaller, mitigating some of the MP "improvement". Besides, the value of 8MP over 5MP is on the whole small. Siri is not a selling point for most - most people I know (or read) with 4S's don't use Siri. Perhaps it would ease the transition from a keyboard for a BBerry user, though.

While I agree in part on "future-proofing" with the 4S, I see many many 3G and 3GS iPhones in use today. It depends on how much she exercises her device. I see arguments both ways. If she can wait til the fall, the 4S will drop in price.

EDIT: I use Android as my personal phone, and she may want to play with w Android phones in the store. Some prefer the design language and interface more.

I have a 4 and the wife has a 4S. There is a notable difference in speed when scrolling, it's not that my 4 is slow, but the 4S does it just a bit faster and smoother. I like her camera better, I like Siri and she has more dictation options. I would go with the 4S.

I don't text much, so my wife's question was out of my scope. On her old dumbphone, she could screen who a text was from, and then chose to open it (20c to VZW) or delete it (free of charge). However, it looks there's no way to do this on an iPhone 4s....or is there?

(She became a volunteer EMT and gets a useless text everytime there's a dispatch, which really add up over a month. She could get a texting plan on her phone, but she'd prefer to save the $120/year. Right now, she's testing out TextNow, which texts for free via data or wifi.)

Unless she is trying to keep the cost under $200, she should definitely wait a few months. The next Iphone will work on the LTE platform and will have a faster processor. The faster processor from the 4 to the 4S is decently noticable. The Iphone 5 should have a more refined Siri as well. There are other things speculated, like a larger screen, better camera and stuff like that, but the move to LTE alone is well worth a few months wait if she can do it.

If its an Iphone 4, its $150, if it is a 4S, its $200 through Apple.

You can buy the kits (glass and all) for no more than $50 off Ebay and do the repair yourself. As to how hard it is, it depends on how mechanically saavy you are. The connection points can be a pain in the ass if not done correctly, as the screen will work but will be intermittent and drive you nuts. There are decent how to videos all over the net. If you have some small electronic shop or computer repair places around you, usually they have someone to do it as well. Apple used to replace the screen for about $100, but they stopped doing it, now they replace just replace the phone.

I ended up going with this: http://iphone4parts....-kit-p-826.html . $80 with free installation. At least I'll be the only one I know with that color iPhone!
