A great article from Chad Finn today

http://www.boston.co...wers/?page=full

A few interesting tidbits:

Bruins studio anchor Kathryn Tappen is expected to depart for the NHL Network in the next couple of weeks; according to an industry source, former Bruins play-by-play voice Dale Arnold is a candidate to replace her. Orsillo has been pursued by TBS, for whom he has done outstanding work calling the baseball postseason the past few seasons. And Red Sox reporter Heidi Watney nearly left after last season but had the option on her three-year contract picked up. Her status for next season remains uncertain.

Although not debating, it'll be great to see Dale Arnold getting some consistent work

NESN really needs to pony up some cash and pay to keep the talent they have as well to bring talent in to staff their programming. At this point some of the people that CSNNE has let go would be instant improvements over those NESN has hired to host their news programs.

And instead of Pocket Money and Sox Appeal they should actually try and cover the local sports that they don't broadcast.

NESN is just so watered down. No one on that network has an opinion, save for Eck.

I can't recall the last time I actually watched the Sox pregame show over Sports Tonight on CSNNE. I actually think CSNNE's formula of hiring talent that I don't really like (Tanguay, Gresh, Borges, etc) is what works for them. I tune in so I can disagree with them.

Ultimately, it's all about Felger. Love him or hate him, he's must see television and radio. He has an "act," but it never feels contrived.

CSNNE completely obliterated NESN's hockey coverage during the playoffs and I agree with Corsi, Felger really is the straw that stirs the drink. Sports Sunday is must see TV for me every Sunday night.

The less time Milbury spends on NESN, the less entertaining it is. Conversely, the national broadcasts during the playoffs were much better between periods with him there to stir the pot a bit.

Agreed with these guys, CSNNE was head and shoulders above NESN during the postseason.

No doubt. I thought CSNNE crushed it with hiring Tony Amonte for the playoff run, and putting him and Felger on the air during intermissions was a masterstroke.

CSNNE is far and away better imo. But I'm biased since I have an unhealthy crush on Jessica Moran.

Btw, I found this line hilarious in Finn's piece regarding Stanley Cup media coverage of Game 7:

NESN devoted nine, though one was play-by-play voice Jack Edwards, who paid his own way to Vancouver when the network would not send him.

Oh its not even close...CSNNE blows NESN away.

NESN's studio shows still have a very amateur production look to them, with minimal graphics or anything of that nature. Their "lifestyle" shows scream "pink hat."

CSN's studio shows aren't revolutionary...it's really the same "noise" heard on talk radio all day with the same people (Felger, Buckley, Merloni, Shaughnessy, Tanguay, Tom Curran, GRESH, etc). But these are all personalities that we're familiar with and the CSN studio shows do talk about the news of the day, whereas NESN has an obvious agenda to push Sox/Bruins above all else no matter what.

Plus, CSNNE.com features arguably the strongest stable of writers in town, as McAdam, Curran, Haggerty, and Blakely are all very good reporters. Does NESN even really have a website? The fact that they still don't have a significant web presence in 2011 is laughable. Even if NESN.com was just a place to catch extended highlights of games, that'd be a major improvement.

NESN.com is shamefully devoted to the Fenway Sports Group brand. You'll get plenty of coverage of the Red Sox and Bruins, of course, but then story upon story about the race car team and Liverpool, and I found their LeBron James ballwashing in the playoffs to be particularly disgusting when compared to the minimal amount of attention paid to the Celtics. Their priorities are just not the same as the typical Boston sports fan's.

rather than attempting to match csnne nesn would do better to attempt to emulate the yes network (even though they have d&c simulcast they still do not feature the same level of programming around the team as the yanks do - classic games - extended interviews - etc.) but thats not gonna happen w/this ownership group being involved in the left turn circuit & soccer...agreed about felger - he is must watch tv on sunday nites...the only time i tune into nesn (since i don't have the mlb xtra innings package) is for the post-game (especially if eck is on)...pre-game is spent flippin' between nesn & csnne but mostly on csnne b/c i can get close to - if not all of - the same information in a shorter format...much agreed on the b's coverage during the run - csnne was far superior to nesn

and this comes from a guy who does not live in new england - so take that for what its worth ;)

What's up with the lights? I don't understand why NESN has all every light in the state on set for every studio show... it's not flattering for both the on-air 'talent' or for their set design.

Neumie (and two callers) took some pretty good shots at Shank and the Globe. I found that to be the best part of the show.

I find "The Baseball Show" to be one of the more informative/entertaining baseball shows out there. Yes, you have to deal with CHB (and some crazy callers) but I really like Neumie's preparation with questions and generally running the show. Lou is awesome to get the players prospective and McAdam is on point (except on politics....just kidding...well sort of) and I think he does a great job on his analysis. They said the show will be back over the course of this crazy offseason, and I am looking forward to it.....

Agreed. I heard CHB answer first and wanted to vomit. Glad they didn't let him get away with that unchallenged.

Seems like unless it is related to the Red Sox (or contained within 30 minutes to puck drop and 30 minutes after the game ends with the Bruins), NESN just isn't equipped to do any sort of live coverage of anything. Everything they put on NESN Daily is in the can before the show airs. There's no going live to Fenway or Gillette or the Garden for a recap of the night's action, it's going to a taped and edited package. They just aren't a news organization, they are a game presentation organization with occasional highlights shows.

flipping through the 4, 5, 7 and NECN all the reporters will tell you that NO ONE (not even them) know any of the players

commentating on the bus boarding order and BB "orchestrating" the order

This

Is

Painful

This pretty much sums it up. NESN is all about supporting and promoting their captive branding.

To go along with what you guys have said, NESN Is just falling behind. Comcast has clearly taken over waves and is getting a majority of the audiences. Even last season during the post season run for the Bruins, Felger and the comcast pre/post game shows had higher ratings than NESN's, despite NESN owning the Bruins rights. Personally, I turn to Comcast for everything. Their coverage is far superior and there are a ton of live shows for all sports. Comcast Sports Tonight is a great show and Comcast Sports Central is what NESN used to be 8 - 10 years ago. Comcast all the way.

I know CSN doesn't expect to win any ratings war against Red Sox spring training games on NESN, but surely there must be something better to put on than a rerun of Coach.

I would imagine the CSNNE Baseball Show will be on every Saturday. That's what they've done for the last few years, no?

WEEI's baseball show is apparently going to be on Sunday mornings with Dale, Buckley, and Bradford. If last weekend was any indication, anyway.

According to Dale, until the Sunday football crew throws them out...

Neumie is probably covering horse racing for NBC, and surprised they are not using Felger this morning

For most of my life when having to choose between NESN and SportsChannel/FoxSportsBoston/Comcast (whatever it was called) I always chose NESN. It probably began when I was a kid when NESN would run the AP stories of sports news games and have the 16-bit team logos in the right hand corner of the screen (I was a geek and thought that was cool), but I've always got my morning sports news from NESN.

That's changed, I hate D&C so I don't even bother to turn on NESN. But even when Dennis and Callahan aren't on (on the weekends) I get my sports news from Comcast, even at night.

Anchor/Host Randy Scott has left NESN for started with ESPN this week. He's got a new Twitter handle.

Always liked him during his brief tenure here, and he was a huge upgrade from Cole Wright. Funny, sarcastic, asked excellent questions during interviews. Reminded me of Brian Kenny.

Hope he doesn't get buried in the mire of the Mothership like so many other broadcasting talents. He's capable of far better things.
